I feel on a different planet to other mumsnetters in terms of budgets for purchasing homes

Dh and I are discussing whether we can live comfortably if purchasing a house for £450k. We would have to seriously tighten the reins.

On the property forum I regularly read threads where MN are deciding where to live with a budget of anything from £800k to £1.3 million. What kills even more is when they receive advice that their budget will not stretch to particular roads in a given area. At this point I think "shoot me now!"

My budget is £205k!

As ever, a site like Mumsnet has a full cross section of people, although I do think the wealthy tend to be the first to lament about money issues (including this thread OP where anyone on planet earth knows that having nearly half a million for a house is clearly a lot of money and more than most).

Come to Scotland. That budget would get you an amazing house here.

The SE property bubble is not representative of the UK property market as a whole. You'd struggle to spend £1.3 million here.

Well, £450k is a generous budget in many areas, it depends entirely on where you need to live. Most of us who could get a million for where we live now would have to pay just as much to buy a similar property, unless we intend to move away.

I know what you mean op but your budget feels incredible to me too! It’s all relative. Our house is worth about £200k and we’d like to move to a better area but our budget is about £260k. If we had your budget we’d be over the bloody moon

My budget is 100k at the absolute maximum OP! At least for the next couple of years if I haven't found anything, then may be able to stretch to 125k!

Well this is a bit of an odd thread considering £450k is way above most people’s budget too.

It's all relative isn't it. Some people couldn't ever afford to consider a house at 450k.
Comparison is the thief of joy, especially as we tend to compare ourselves to those who have more not less.

um lamenting others wealth when you have more than most is really not a good look.

Ha ha ha, very funny. I thought your first paragraph was you paraphrasing the threads from another world but no, you actually do have half a million to spend on a house. I think you might be on a different planet than most people but not the planet you think you are on.

You could get a nice two bed flat in my part of London for that. And a whole house (admittedly a small terrace) a bit further down the line, outside of the SE it could buy a big house. Honestly I think it's pretty distasteful to complain when you have almost half a million quid to buy with. Even if that means 'tightening your belts' you are still clearly much better off than most. I think a lot of the property threads are bullshit tbh, no one I know with an £800k+ budget would ask internet strangers their opinion.

I'm in the south east and house hunting with a budget of £325k and we are looking at 3 or 4 beds, semi or detached with off-road parking and a decent garden. So £450k is definitely a big budget!

House prices vary hugely across the country. As do incomes. Some posters might be first time buyers, others may be London/SE based high income earners with 4 teens.
You just can't compare.

I happen to think it's distasteful to be all 'woe is me' when your budget is way, way above most people's affordability.

Yep we're definitely on a different planet. My budget was stretched at £130k...

My flat was £100k. It has been recently valued at £200k, but I couldn't afford to buy it at today's prices. £450k would buy a wonderful house here.

We are in the NW and just had an offer accepted for 170k which is the top end of our budget. DPs niece who lives in Kent in a cheap town can't get anything for that. They can't believe we just sold our 4 bed semi for 110k and not even a bad area!

I think I'd be stretched paying £100k for a house, mine was £65k!

I'll be getting the Loch Lomond house as a holiday home if I win the lottery though

You do realise some people cannot afford to feed their children. You are on another planet if you think buying a house for £450k puts you in the poor category.

A couple of points

MN is SE centric to some extent (which gives you a very skewed idea of normal house prices - I live London and prices are mad)
MN has a wealthier demographic
People lie / present the life they want to have
