I feel on a different planet to other mumsnetters in terms of budgets for purchasing homes

Dh and I are discussing whether we can live comfortably if purchasing a house for £450k. We would have to seriously tighten the reins.

On the property forum I regularly read threads where MN are deciding where to live with a budget of anything from £800k to £1.3 million. What kills even more is when they receive advice that their budget will not stretch to particular roads in a given area. At this point I think "shoot me now!"

What you call a house budget, I call ... stamp duty!

Just kidding! Don’t stampede me!

Drogosnextwife · 28/08/2019 12:44

My house cost 67000. I think a lot of people on MN need to get a bit of a reality check.

Dangerfloof · 28/08/2019 12:45

no one I know with an £800k+ budget would ask internet strangers their opinion
It's True, this just doesn't happen.
FWIW my first house was 30k, my second house was 85k. And I dont plan to move again. Half a mil will just never happen for me, and if by chance it did (lottery win is the only way) i wouldn't spend it on a house when I love where I live now.

JHaniver · 28/08/2019 12:45

Our budget is £175k and we’re feeling pretty lucky. It would always be nice to have more but the most important thing is that your budget can get you something suitable. Comparing never helps.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 28/08/2019 12:47

DurhamDurham "It's all relative isn't it. Some people couldn't ever afford to consider a house at 450k. Comparison is the thief of joy, especially as we tend to compare ourselves to those who have more not less."

Well said.

PinkFlowerFairy · 28/08/2019 12:49

Wow. Your budget is more than 10x the average household income.... perspective.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 28/08/2019 12:49

My house budget was 70K and I love it.

AudacityOfHope · 28/08/2019 12:50

Are you actually fucking serious?

Have you honestly never noticed any of the threads on here started by women who are trying to decide between feeding their kids or getting the bus to work, or affording tampons, or can't leave their abusive husbands because they can't afford to?

Your lack of empathy is fucking staggering.

Faith50 · 28/08/2019 12:51

Lola we cannot buy a home for £450k. We would have no disposable income whatsoever.

C0untDucku1a · 28/08/2019 12:52

Is this a stealth boast? £450k for a house?

Compare that to the national average and give your head a wobble.

And no you and your dh didnt work harder than everyone else Hmm before you suggest that

Madhatterhouse · 28/08/2019 12:52

Average UK property price as of March 2019 was £243,120. So yes, you are on another planet to most - you have almost 100% more the spend than them Hmm

nornironrock · 28/08/2019 12:52

By any measure at all £450k is a decent budget, particularly in comparison to average house values across the UK.

The people talking about stats being skewed by the SE (and in particular that there London) are correct.

Come to Scotland, beautiful area this house is in 😉

Faith50 · 28/08/2019 12:53

There are plenty of MN who ask for advice on where to live on huge budgets. I read the property theads on a daily basis.

DoomsdayCult · 28/08/2019 12:54

Bigger houses take more money to run/maintain than smaller ones. So keep that in mind when looking at your budget. Don’t make it too tight. You don’t want to be house rich but cash poor and suffering from sleepless nights agonising over you’re going to come up with £3k to fix the guttering (for example).

MadisonAvenue · 28/08/2019 12:54

I could offer the asking price for my dream house, which is currently on the market, and still have £90,000 to spare with your budget OP!

Faith50 · 28/08/2019 12:55

This was not a stealth boast at all. I apologise for those I have offended.

OP posts:
Drogosnextwife · 28/08/2019 12:55

It's not all relative when people come on MN to winge and pray for death, because their 450k mortgage just won't get them a good enough house 😭.
I hate the "it's all relative" bullshit trotted out everytime rich people come on here to have a winge.
It doesn't matter what they wish they had, they should have the common sense to realise that MOST people don't have that kind of money, so they should stop bitcjing about how shit their life is because they don't have a million quid to spend on a house, and be greatful that they have a house ffs 🙄

BrendasUmbrella · 28/08/2019 12:56

if it makes you feel better I will never be able to afford any property. I've resigned myself to a life of renting.

Very near Edinburgh 😃
I’m mystified by the MN house budgets, there was a post before where she was dithering over houses worth £600k, they looked like ex council blocks that had been refurbed 😳 horrible things.

I have asked for the thread to be removed.

“Shoot me now, I can only buy a house worth nearly half a million pounds” while people all over the UK can’t even afford to feed their kids. FFS.

AudacityOfHope · 28/08/2019 12:58

You know, it would almost reflect better if it was a stealth boast.

The fact that you genuinely think 'shoot me now' about only having the best part of half a million to spend on a house is sad for you; what a fucking mindset to live with.

NettleTea · 28/08/2019 12:59

I dont even have a budget!! In my early 50s and for the first time in my life I have some savings, but they are barely touching double figures. Plus now Im too old to get a mortgage. And as much of my income is tax credits for a disabled child, and that will all stop next year, I dont think Im ever going to afford to buy a home
