20 days holiday entitlement? Normal? New job

Is this pretty normal in new job? Or very low and has any negotiated holiday time before accepting a job.
It's for dh and we have young dc so holiday entitlement is crucial.

I wondered if it is part of negotiating... When starting..
So he should clarify that bank holiday is in addition

My previous job was 20 days + BH. It was horrendous when coming from a 25 day business. I worked in London and 25 days was the norm. Not sure where your DH works.

It doesn't sound like much but those extra 5 days mean an extra week away or a few extra days when you really need an appointment somewhere or need to look after DCs. It was a huge source of resentment amongst the staff.

If I were your DH I'd definitely ask

  • about unpaid leave
  • if there are any days set aside in the year for things like poorly DC
  • if they have a sliding scale of service and AL (1 extra day for every year with the company)
  • if they have plans to offer more days off
  • if they shut down over Christmas (some places have 2 weeks off over Christmas as standard so you essentially get 30 days AL)

if they shut down as standard over Christmas it is still part of your annual leave allowance there is absolutely no right to free choice annual leave
however employers need to treat everyone fairly you can have a rule that no one can have more than 10days in a run or that you can only have 2 weeks during the school summer holidays or conversely because of tax year end no annual leave in March or first two weeks in April or that only 1 person in X role can be off at once etc etc but you can't have a rule that employees without children have to work Christmas and new year or give employees with children first choice
