I nearly got run over by a fucking hybrid car

The bloody bastard things don’t make ANY noise.

Camping this weekend, no cars on site so I wasn’t expecting to see one. Walked out between two lines of tents and the fucking thing was almost on top of me. Stupid woman driving it could barely see over the steering wheel and carried on driving. I jumped back out of the way and banged on the bonnet. She drove for about 10 meters before another camper stopped her and said WTF you nearly ran her over. She was completely non plussed. Any normal car I would have heard coming.

How the hell do blind people cross the road when one of these things could be on top of them ffs?!

The new law will still allow drivers to switch off the noise why bother making "noise" a legal requirement then??

Kazzyhoward · 28/08/2019 14:08

the onus should be on the driver of a heavy, fast moving car which is travelling silently.

If it's moving fast, it WILL be making a noise. This thread is about slow driving where there is no noise. Apparently it's under 15/20 mph where these cars are virtually silent - hardly fast moving!

People need to be more aware of their surroundings if they're about to step into the path of traffic!

I am amused by the idea that many engineers are currently working on brum-brum-brum noise makers suitable for electric cars Grin

AlbertWinestein · 28/08/2019 14:35

We have a Tesla and it’s really not silent, except at very slow speeds. You can absolutely hear it on the road because the friction between the tires and the road make a noise. Furthermore, it has a billion and one sensors so beeps (or stops) every time an object gets too close.

The car, regardless of how it’s powered, shouldn’t have been in the campground but pedestrians really do need to walk with a certain amount of awareness of what’s around them.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 28/08/2019 14:50

I drive an EV and have to be so super careful in car parks. Pedestrians don't look where they are going I'm afraid.

I'd agree with Arnold that at speed there is noise from road friction, but at low speeds, my car is very quiet.

Most campsites i've stayed at ask drivers to drive at 5-10 miles an hour because there may be small children. It doesn't sound like the driver in the OP was paying attention.

verticality · 28/08/2019 14:51

I think the issue is less the hybrid car and more the idiot driving it unsafely.

BogglesGoggles · 28/08/2019 14:53

You should gave check properly and the driver should have been more observant. The blissfully quiet engine isn’t the issue.

SedatedMess · 28/08/2019 14:54

OP I thought my screen reader said I nearly got run over by fucking a hybrid car

worse than hybrid cars are hybrid lorries and buses. I hate the bloody things.

Im registered blind and had 3 near misses with hybrid cars; all were misses because others were crossing the road too and I have been grabbed hold of and pulled backwards (scary, but preferable to being left under a car!)

They definitely need a brum-brum sound!

UrsulaPandress · 28/08/2019 15:14

I thought it was a car free campsite?

And having been programmed all our lives that cars make a noise, it’s one hell of a fucking leap to blame pedestrians and other vulnerable road users for not checking for random silent hazards.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 28/08/2019 15:19

I’m not keen on the lack of noise

And to be fair i am much more worried about dh knocking a child over when reversing out of the drive

He does tend to reverse in and pull out...and he knows how quiet the car is so he is extra careful

EverTheConundrum · 28/08/2019 19:22

I live in the first town in the country to have all-electric buses - now they are dangerous and frankly, scary. Thank God I'm not a pedestrian

EverTheConundrum · 28/08/2019 19:26

They're not even hybrids they're 100% electric! 🤷🚎
