£50k to spend on a family car. Go!

Anyone know anything about cars? We live in central(ish) London and have never needed one until now with the arrival of our second child.

Car needs to be big enough for 2 car seats to fit comfortably at the back plus a big boot for the double buggy and Ddog. Will probably only use it to do the weekly shop plus day trips out of London from time to time.

We are paying cash (as opposed to getting it on finance) does that give us any bargaining power when buying a car?

OP posts:

Grocery deliveries, zip car and use money for something either more fun or more sensible 😄

Teensruletheroost · 26/08/2019 15:51

With regard to paying cash or finance, we got offered a better deal on finance for our last car so checked with the dealership that we could pay off the finance early. We hen paid it off after three months, the dealership got their commission, we got the discount and only paid three months of interest.

OP ignore people slating you for paying £50k, it’s your money and up to you what you do with it!

We do generally buy six month old cars though often for 2/3rds of the original list price.

Finally check out the size of your parking space!

Have fun looking!

Another vote for Volvo - we just traded in our XC90 for a lovely new XC60. Lovely to drive, lovely on the inside, self parking, 360 degree cameras etc.

LazyFace · 26/08/2019 15:52

Would you consider an electric car? Volvo has a nice big one, no idea about the price but it's practical for a city.

mystupidmistake · 26/08/2019 15:52

Get a nice big Volvo

Derbee · 26/08/2019 15:53

OP, not sure if you post on here a lot, but in amongst the reasonable people, there are a lot of posters who hate

People with money
People with nice non abusive partners
People who like their MILs
People who own cars
People who fly and obviously don’t care about the planet

Hope you’ve had some helpful info, and are now aware of the fact that you’re a selfish arse with too much money, who doesn’t care about the planet and obviously doesn’t give enough to charity. 😂

mystupidmistake · 26/08/2019 15:54

@Sweetooth92 bargain!

Drogosnextwife · 26/08/2019 15:56

For 50k you could generally get any car you like, not sure why you need to ask. Just go into a showroom and tell them you want a big car that will fit your dog and a double buggy. Not rocket science really.

Sweetooth92 · 26/08/2019 15:57

@mystupidmistake I honestly went to view fully expecting a catch or something to be wrong. Best 15k we’ve ever spent.

pp12 · 26/08/2019 15:59

One thing I have found is a Kia Picanto is more comfortable than a Mini Countryman. Price is not everything.

AnotherEmma · 26/08/2019 16:00

@banskuwansku
Good choice Wink I'm very happy with my new Octavia so far!

actuallyquitesmall · 26/08/2019 16:01

Thanks to reading this thread, I now have endless adverts for cars popping up all over the place.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/08/2019 16:01

Can you get a charging point fitted ? It will open up a load of choices for you .

leghairdontcare · 26/08/2019 16:01

I don't think you can get cars for less than 60k these days...

AnotherEmma · 26/08/2019 16:03

70
Charging points are not strictly necessary if you have an external plug socket; they will charge the battery faster though.

MadameJosephine · 26/08/2019 16:03

I’d get an electric car, I’ve had one for 6 years and love it. I’d recommend the BMWi3 which I drive now but it might not be big enough for you. My old Nissan Leaf had plenty of space though and a massive boot.

itbemay1 · 26/08/2019 16:08

Something electric

Ligresa · 26/08/2019 16:10

This needs to win some sort of award as the most annoying post ever on MN

Yup

If you have a lot of money then buy an electric car.

2 children is not very many. You don't need a special car.

waddleandtoddle · 26/08/2019 16:12

I have an unfashionable EcoSport - went for Ford as I wanted to minimise repair costs - parts aren't that expensive. Leased, and now bought outright. Has full leather seats, and that is wonderful with a dog. Boot is huge. I fill up once a month. Love the car. MPV. Great with elderly parents as its a step up in to car. As much as I love this car, I would recommend researching electric cars, especially from a tax/zone charges perspective. But no hesitation in recommending.

Ligresa · 26/08/2019 16:12

If you like flashy then my friend has just bought an electric Porsche cayenne. I think it's hideous but they like it (2 kids 2 dogs)

leasedaudi · 26/08/2019 16:15

Use some money towards a zipcar flex when you need it and get groceries home delivered? Then have a £10k holidayonce a year for five years

ShivD · 26/08/2019 16:16

Volvo XC40 without a doubt in your shoes. I have 4 kids so can only dream 🤣

Our London loving friends with 2 x kids and a dog drive one and it is dreamy

Bodear · 26/08/2019 16:17

Volvo XC60
Easy to drive and park, loads of room. Brilliant cars.

Runoutofgas · 26/08/2019 16:18

Volvo XC90 or Mazda CX-5

AlbertWinestein · 26/08/2019 16:21

A Mini Clubman. Plenty of space in the boot and easily holds two car seats. Plus it doesn’t take up too much space so you can park it easily in the city.
