Anyone know anything about cars? We live in central(ish) London and have never needed one until now with the arrival of our second child.

Car needs to be big enough for 2 car seats to fit comfortably at the back plus a big boot for the double buggy and Ddog. Will probably only use it to do the weekly shop plus day trips out of London from time to time.

We are paying cash (as opposed to getting it on finance) does that give us any bargaining power when buying a car?

Don’t get an XC90 with 2 kids, we have one and they are fab but HUGE and not worth the London parking faff if you don’t have loads of kids to carry around. Get something smaller that is easier to park especially in on street parking on London’s streets when out and about.

Agree about not getting an XC90. Both times we’ve been in the dealer for a service etc, we’ve overheard conversations of people downsizing to an XC60, because the 90 is so massive an impractical to park etc. And we’re not even in a big city

Wtaf is wrong with some of you posters on here? Why when someone has money do you lay into them like they are some sort of pariah? Would you do the same if she were poor? Would you belittle her? Fuck sake get a grip you jealous assholes!

OP 50k to most of us is a huge amount of money but if you’re well off it’s all relative. I bought a 6 month old SUV - qashqai. Paid £18k in cash for it and I really love it. It’s roomy too. I didn’t get a discount for cash though sadly and mirror what others say about car dealers preferring finance deals.

I’m rubbish with cars but a jeep style thing might be the way to go with two car seats. Hope you find a lovely car and sorry you’ve been unfairly treated on here.

@BarbaraofSeville

Well obviously they do, but people don't generally decide to spend such a significant sum when they don't appear to have any interest or enthusiasm for cars, as appears to be the case for the OP

Of course they do! I've no real interest in cars but I want one where you can sit three comfortably in the back, room for dog in the boot, heated electric programmable leather seats, touch close boot, reversing camera etc.

If a car has those I don't much care for the badge but I know it's going to cost.

Exactly right! Absolutely disgusting how people with money get treated sometimes, and it's usually to justify ones own shitty situation and make them feel better about themselves.

Look st these cars:
Ford Smax
Nissan xtrail
Audi Q7
BMW Lux Grand tourer

I'd stay clear of the rest.... these will have enough space and boot room for a dog crate and buggies and shopping!!

Just get it on finance and change it every two years on a PCP ( don't put a big deposit down tho as you'll never recoup that)

Good luck!

Skoda Superb Estate. Our top of range one was less than £40k. If only for occasional use I'd look for second hand. Or you often get deals on new with last plate) shortly before the new plates come out.

stayathomer · 29/08/2019 05:12

How about a Toyota Prius hybrid or an electric Nissan Leaf?

Just looked up both of these cars and they don't seem big enough for dogs and children together?

AnotherEmma · 29/08/2019 07:56

Nope

We have an Audi A6 estate which would easily suit your requirements. We got it 18months old for a really good price as it had so many optional extras on it which the original owner would have paid silly money for. Easily get a decent one for half your budget.

Bought a nearly-three year old Volvo XC60 for a bit under 20k from a Volvo dealership with warranty, servicing etc. Solid, safe and happy to let someone else lose the initial 20k in depreciation. If we didn't do 15k miles a year and live in the country we'd have spent less.

Needed the boot space for the dog because he's a giant breed. Unless you have a medium sized pony to transport, your dog will fit fine.

Seriously, buy something cheaper and save the money - the economy's going to struggle in all probability and having that in savings is a much better idea.

50k on a car you're barely going to use is crazy.
