What the hell are my eyes doing?

A week ago I was driving and felt like I was being blinded by the light- like my eyes were letting too much in. When it became shady my eyes would take forever to readjust. I didn’t think anything of it

Now, I’m the last 10 minutes, I felt that feeling of too much light again, and have gone to sit in a dark room. I can see a weird psychedelic multicoloured weird flashing or movement around my field of vision- I think above my eye as I can’t ‘look’ at it. It’s not going or settling!

It’s reminding me of the attached image, but it’s moving constantly!

I normally wear glasses- my Vision isn’t terrible and I can get by without them. Wearing glasses is not helping reduce whatever this flashing is

What the hell are my eyes doing?

Migraine? I get the flashing lights (like lightening flashes moving across my field of vision) before I get the headache.

Bishalisha · 25/08/2019 21:48

Maybe- the flashing has stopped and I now have a headache behind my eyes Sad

Sounds like a migraine to me too

Sounds like a visual migraine. You can have this without a headache. The Dr told me it can be triggered by stress or being too hot...and she told me to come off the combined pill as it's a contra-indicator.

Flupibass · 25/08/2019 21:58

It’s worth going to the opticians to have a check up and explain what’s been going on

PickAChew · 25/08/2019 22:00

Sounds lika an aura. Bright lights can trigger that.

Mummoomoocow · 25/08/2019 22:00

I get blind spots of static that I can’t directly look at before I get a migraine with light hypersensitivity. Sounds similar.

BogglesGoggles · 25/08/2019 22:01

Classic migrane.

Kam610 · 25/08/2019 22:01

I get visual migraines that are similar to this but I don't get a headache. It usually passes within 10 mins or so.

lurkingfromhome · 25/08/2019 22:01

Ocular migraine. Very common, not serious, but really alarming the first time you have one and don’t know what’s going on!

Turniptracker · 25/08/2019 22:01

You are having a migraine with aura. Not always associated with pain, I used to get little blobs of my vision go blurry (couldn't see all the keys on my phone keyboard, looked like there were smudges on the screen), chills and sweats, sudden needing a wee a lot. Lots of weird symptoms you wouldn't realise were related to migraine. I rarely got headache pain with the proper aura migraines actually.
Please note if you are taking the combined pill you must come off it immediately (not joking, the doctors flipped when they knew I was taking it with visual migraine). It can put you at very real risk of stroke

pancaketits · 25/08/2019 22:07

Ocular migraine? I've had these before and they're very scary as they're almost completely painless, you just can't see.

Sewrainbow · 25/08/2019 22:37

Sounds like retinal migraine I get them, rarely get headache but so.etimes get pain behind my eyes. Hormones can make it worse Sad

wowfudge · 25/08/2019 22:48

OP what you have had this evening sounds like migraine with aura. The one a week ago was an ocular migraine - lasts for around 25 minutes with no headache. Ocular migraines are scary. I remember sitting at my desk at work wondering why I couldn't focus. I've only had a handful of ocular migraines - usually at very stressful times. Ordinary migraines are much more common and depressingly frequent. If you are on the pill and have had aura with migraine you should tell your GP. There are effective medications available.

ChipInTheSugar · 25/08/2019 23:29

Scintillating scotoma is the other name for them. I remember the first one I had - thought I was going blind!

Crunchymum · 25/08/2019 23:45

Yes, yes to ocular migraine.

Mine were always linked to cycle (had them around ovulation and period, so twice a month). As long as I took painkillers when the aura started, I'd negate the horrible headache. Rarely get them since DC2 (nearly 5yo!)

ElderMcKinley · 25/08/2019 23:46

Fascinated by ocular migraines - I think I had one a couple of months ago, but neither the doctor nor the optician I saw mentioned them! Can they be triggered by sudden changes in light?

millionreasonswhy · 25/08/2019 23:51

Please go and see a doctor. Don't just take people's word that it is a migraine. Any sudden vision abnormalities or headaches need to be checked by a professional.

springydaff · 26/08/2019 00:47

I used to get the aura followed by The. Most. Appalling. Headache (actually, one eye) - so do take analgesic the moment you get the visual disturbance, just to get on top of any pain.

I finally conquered migraines with deep breathing - the moment I get a hint of visual disturbance I take a deeeep breath (while I'm getting out the analgesics..) and continue to breath steadily and deeply - though usually the very deep breath at the start cuts the migraine off in its tracks. Worth a try.

I hope you haven't come back bcs you've gone to bed and not because you're suffering.. Flowers

Bishalisha · 26/08/2019 07:37

Good morning everyone! I took some painkillers and went to sleep in case it developed into a full blown migraine. Luckily it didn’t and I seem fine today, but still feel very light sensitive

I’m due a check up at the opticians so will book an appointment anyway

OP posts:
Bishalisha · 26/08/2019 07:38

And it’s SO WEIRD isn’t it? Sorry other people have that! I was worrying it could be something more serious

OP posts:
Ligresa · 26/08/2019 07:43

Yes its super weird. I get them without rhe headaches, visual disturbances then a feeling like I am hungover.

hopeishere · 26/08/2019 07:45

Migraine. First time it happened to me I thought I was having a stroke!

Bishalisha · 26/08/2019 07:55

@hopeishere that thought did cross my mind Blush

I get ocular migraines occasionally, usually triggered when I’ve been looking on the internet for an extended period of time.

As soon as I get the aura I stop what I’m doing and have a nap for 20 minutes and that clears it but I’m careful not to look at a screen for an hour or so.
