Hi. My son is a good reader and has always been interested in books but I sense his interest is trailing a bit. Has anyone got any recommendations for writers/books so I can keep him keen?!
He really loved the Treehouse series, we’ve read most of the David Walliams books, Tom Gates etc, we’ve just read David Baddiel’s Head Boy but it was a bit old for him. He’s not keen on Harry Potter or fantasy stuff, prefers ‘real life’ stories. Currently mad on football!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Swallows and Amazons series?

lickthewrapper · 24/08/2019 22:02

He might like the diary of a wimpy kid series.

My 8 year old loves Tom Gates and Wimpy kid books, or anything funny. He went through a big Beastquest phase a few months ago too.
Funny books with male lead characters seem to be his thing. Have a look on The book people. We bought the Percy Jackson books for his cousin around the same age. My DS hasn't read them but might be worth investigating?

Middle School series (similar to Tom Gates).

Mr Gum? Spy dog? Could be too young for him but I adored them at that age.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 24/08/2019 22:28

Jonathan Meres ?

Howtotrainyourhamster · 24/08/2019 22:33

My 8 year old likes captain underpants (though they are v quick to read) and diary of a wimpy kid as mentioned. Also recently the Percy Jackson books.

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 24/08/2019 22:39

'Kid normal' books are really good plus king Edwin flashy pants (really engaging and funny!)

Seenonchannel4 · 24/08/2019 22:39

Thanks everyone. Great suggestions. We’ve read a few of the diary of a wimpy kid books, which he really liked. Ditto Mr Gum, he loved these.
I don’t know Percy Jackson or Jonathan Meres so will try them, thank you!

My son is 7, and has also read all of David Walliam's books (bar Grandpa's Great Escape-he tells me he can't get into it). He's recently read the Worst Witch series, and I've just ordered him the Famous Five set. He's recently read and enjoyed The Boy who Grew Dragons. Have you tried any Michael Morpurgo?

Seenonchannel4 · 24/08/2019 22:41

Thanks fortythree. I’ll check these out too.

Oh my god - he's 8, into football and likes real life stories?? How has no-one recommended the 'Ultimate Football Heroes' books yet?

I have an 8 year old and a 10 year old and they are both MAD about these books. Sounds like your son will feel the same. Hope so as it has really fuelled their reading interest. xx

hopefullyhelpfully · 24/08/2019 22:43

DS (also 8) has read the whole How to train your dragon series (actually very enjoyable with some challenging vocabulary.)
He's also finished Philip Pullman's The Firework makers Daughter (school book but he enjoyed it).

Also a book he got from the library called broccoli boy.

Seenonchannel4 · 24/08/2019 22:44

Hmm, have attempted to steer DS towards Michael Morpugo, Wallabyone, but no joy. Think school had beaten me to it and he’d decided all the books were ‘boring’! 😕

My 9yo has recently moved from Tom Gates, Wimpy Kid etc to Anthony Horowitz (eg Groosham Grange).

Iggly · 24/08/2019 22:48

My ds loves the Rascal series at that age. About a dog which makes it way home - there’s a few books. He loved it. Plus Jill Murphy “Dear Hound”

AiryFairy1 · 24/08/2019 22:54

Rory Brannigan Detective books - my kids love them!

backinblack1 · 24/08/2019 23:01

The David Baddeil kids books are great - I think he’s done around 5 - the birthday boy and the parent agency are a couple of them.

Sewrainbow · 25/08/2019 00:03

What almostn9ne says my boys have just devoured this whole series!

Just mentioned on another thread that they also liked how to train your dragon series and some novels about star wars and Jedi school.

almostn9ne · 25/08/2019 00:23

Mine too Sewrainbow. Although I have just ordered Iniesta as I've been informed by 10 year old that's the last one he hasn't read.

10 year old is also into the Alex Rider books although they are perhaps too old for your 8 year old (in theme I mean, not ability).

escapade1234 · 25/08/2019 00:26

I find Michael Morpurgo deathly boring too so what hope does an 8 year old have?

My son enjoyed The Accidental Prime Minister/President/Billionaire/Secret Agent books by Tom McLaughlin at that age.

MontyBowJangles · 25/08/2019 00:34

My 8.5yo is enjoying The Bolds books by Julian Clary (from our local library).

hittheroadjack1 · 25/08/2019 01:03

My 7 year old loves my brothers a superhero range.

Hes read captain underpants, my brothers famous bottom amongst other things.

Directionless2019 · 25/08/2019 07:16
