Please tell me what to do in Bristol

So this is the situation...my daughter is obsessed with going to see the Clifton suspension bridge, and we've promised that we would do so this summer.
We've booked an overnight stay in Bristol and are now overwhelmed by the number of things to do there!
We also have two other children, ages ranging from 17 to 10.
Could anyone please give me any recommendations as to must-see attractions? Thank you!

I love the Saturday market and food stalls. Also walk round by the docks.

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 14:38

Hi, thank you! Looks such a beautiful place to visit Smile

If she's desperate to see the suspension bridge why don't you add in a visit to the SS Great Britain so she can find out more about Brunel? It's an interactive museum and your tickets last for a year.

Another vote for SS Great Britain. Totally unique thing you would not get to see elsewhere.

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 14:47

That sounds brilliant! My techie mad son would be interested in that too. Thank you both!

Depends on weather and how much you want to spend. We the curious is great but pricey and indoors. Outside walking along the Harbour is free or get the ferry for my much. M shed is that way and free. Cafe is dire but wapping wharf is just next door and made of shipping containers. Suspension bridge is free to walk across. Visitor centre covers as Great Britain which is wonderful. Loads of good places to eat in Clifton. Majority child friendly. Check out the beautiful cakes in Anna.

If you are going to the suspension bridge then go to the camera obscura - it is great. When I was a teenager Park street was the cool place to shop but I don't know if that's still true.

If you are at the Suspension Bridge, you have to visit the "sliding rock". (Natural rock slide that has been worn smooth by people sliding down it over the years.) It's right next to it. Also, Avon Gorge Hotel in Clifton if it's nice weather - fantastic views of the Bridge from their terrace.

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 15:18

Some fab suggestions, thank you all! We're off later in the week so hopefully the weather will still be good. Staying very centrally, so might squeeze in a bit of shopping if I can!

Bristol is lovely, we went last year and it was one of those cool but sunny autumn days.

I agree with the other posters but one thing I’d like to suggest as well is a Banksy walking tour. You can design your own, it’s a good way to explore.

Enjoy, it’s a lovely city.

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 15:40

That sounds interesting, 1vy - my middle child is very much into art so she'd enjoy that. Thank you!

Agree with others Ss Great Britain l, M she'd just the harboirside in general is great. The zoo is in Clifton the aquarium is on the harbour side both small compared to others and pricey but other options if you into animals

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 15:59

Thanks Figgy Smile

The slidey rock is a great childhood memory for me 😍😍😍 must take my boys sometime.

GOD I adore Bristol. Just enjoy the vibe!!! It’s the best (might be nostalgia talking there...!)

Apolloanddaphne · 24/08/2019 16:06

My DD2 just graduated from Bristol in the summer so we had a holiday while we were down for the graduation. I enjoyed the M Shed immensely and also the zoo. I also enjoyed trying the cider but maybe not with children!

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 16:21

Yes, Bendy, we've been told what a cool place Bristol is. One of the reasons we were keen to visit Smile

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 16:22

I'm sure I could sneak in a cheeky cider, Apollo Wink

Being practical, you can spend a day up in Clifton doing bridge, camera obscura, shops etc. There's a great playground near the bridge too but yours may be too old for that. How are you getting around? If you're on the centre the 8/9 bus goes up to Clifton (forgive me for not knowing which way round they go!).
The Royal Academy West is also more of less in Clifton for art.
I'd say the aquarium is way overpriced and only fills an hour tops (tho you can go in and out all day).
You can also do a bit of a boat ride round the harbour on the Bristol Ferry boats.
I'm local, tho live south side so can try to answer any questions!

sanityisamyth · 24/08/2019 16:38

@user1471525753 my dad (now 69) used to slide down that rock!! He grew up in Pembroke Road. I sent him a video of DS doing it last year. It's really cool!

Showchin2 · 24/08/2019 16:45

Thanks Juni - we're travelling by car but hopefully parking up and exploring by public transport, so that's really good to know. Getting excited now - looks like such a brilliant place!

Parking in Clifton is generally a pain in the ass (& expensive) but if there are lots of you the bus may work out more expensive! Check out the first bus app, you can get a day ticket for £4.50 which is good value for more than two journeys.
There's also a newish visitor centre at the bridge so it's a bit more interesting than "just" walking over it.

highheelsandbobblehats · 24/08/2019 16:50

I love Bristol. We live nearby so go in fairly regularly. Another vote for the SS Great Britain and the M Shed. You can easily walk from one to the other along the old railway lines on the harbour side. Millennium Square, where We The Curious is has a fantastic vibe in the summer, with deckchairs. Children regularly play in the fountain there. A trip along the river is good fun. See if you can get on the Gromit boat.

There's a Banksy next to the SS Great Britain.

user1471525753 · 24/08/2019 16:59

Seems the sliding rock holds fond memories for many BristoliansSmile If you do fancy partaking in a cider or 2, you need to head for the Coronation Tap (also in Clifton).
