Enjoying the sun as a childless adult?

Motherofacat · 23/08/2019 19:32

This may be a strange post but curious as to what days out other childless adults have over sunny weekends?
My friends are all busy this weekend so I will be alone and don't fancy staying at home. I don't mind going places by myself but think taking a walk around a country park or sitting in a beer garden alone may raise a few eyebrows?

National Trust? No-one can tell who's with whom in an NT property.

Do you know anyone whose dog needs walking?

Yodude · 23/08/2019 19:38

I would do just what you suggested, take a lovely long walk followed by a cold drink in a beer garden. You can do whatever you want. Nobody will be raising their eyebrows. Nobody thinks you need to have someone with you to enjoy yourself. Enjoy your own company and the freedom to do exactly as you wish without having to take anyone else's wishes into account.

Champagne791 · 23/08/2019 19:38

I love going on walks by myself!

hooraysuperworm · 23/08/2019 19:42

To be honest, as the parent wrangling a non mobile (but SERIOUSLY peed off about that fact) 9 month old, I’d think you were a freaking genius for doing something alone to enjoy the sunshine.

Honestly, do what you want and enjoy 😎

CatSmize · 23/08/2019 19:44

I'd take a good book to a beer garden.

GreyGardens88 · 23/08/2019 19:45

You need to get a grip if you're paranoid about walking alone in a park

Motherofacat · 23/08/2019 20:01

No need to be rude GreyGardens88
Thanks for the comments so far. Might have been overthinking it as you generally see people with kids or dogs on nature trails.

I know what you mean.
Pretend to be a runner. Everyone expects runners to be on their own. Dress in sports clothing, with headphones. Either actually run or walk while projecting an image of ‘I’ve just been for a reeeally long run, and am now having a lovely walk to cool down.’ Grin

gotmychocolateimgood · 23/08/2019 20:11

Do it. I'm on holiday at the moment. Every afternoon/evening my DCs go to the kids club for a couple of hours, DH goes to the gym and I sit in the hotel bar with a drink on my own. Magazine, book, mn or hat to people. Then we go for dinner together. It's the first time they have really enjoyed kids club and it's a really good one. Fab activities, enthusiastic staff. So I don't feel guilty!

Personally I love being alone for a short time. Embrace it! Everyone else will be too busy worrying about themselves to notice.

boring485 · 23/08/2019 20:38

Me and my husband go on long country walks, find a pub and have a pint then tootle along on our way. I have done this alone and enjoyed it!

formerbabe · 23/08/2019 20:49

I'd take a big rug and lie in a park with a good book and some delicious m&s food!

PickingUpLicks · 23/08/2019 20:55

I take my dog out twice a day (beach or park) and there's always lone walkers. I don't think anything about them because before I got my dog I did exactly the same thing.
Weekends and bank holidays are shit though when you have nothing to do, you feel everyone else is having a whale of a time.

lucylouis · 23/08/2019 20:55

I love going to a beer garden or a park with a book. Perfect

MyPatronusIsABadger · 23/08/2019 21:04

Do exactly as you please. I’m in the same situation although with a dog. Take a book or people watch, picnic or go to a beer garden or tea room.
I do a walk to the shop for a paper, back to the outdoor tea room and sit with an afternoon tea looking about/reading. It’s nice to be out in the sun and you should by no means miss out of that!!

Crunched · 23/08/2019 21:09

What about finding the closest place to you where they do wild (outdoor) swimming?
There is a list available online and it is usually adults taking part.

museumum · 23/08/2019 21:11

Country walk with a podcast or long bike ride. Bliss.

RainbowMum11 · 23/08/2019 21:19

I take a book/kindle - go for a nice walk and then beer garden - only a problem if it's dead busy and you have to leave your table to go to the loo/bar and risk losing your seat.

FinallyHere · 23/08/2019 21:25

https://www.ramblers.org.uk

Pick a walk, the search on the ramblers site is pretty flexible. You can search by location. Date/time also level.

Some of the walks will end at a pub or so, expecting to have lunch together, others suggest bring a picnic.

Very friendly people. Enjoy.

fatfluffycushion · 23/08/2019 21:41

Go to your nearest city / big town that has a site-seeing jump-on jump-off bus and take in the sites
National trust / English heritage property's
South bank London , eat from street vendors and people watch
Park with a picnic and a book
Galleries
Museums
Boot fair
Open air cinema / theatre with a picnic

wheresmymojo · 23/08/2019 21:42

When I was single I used to take a picnic and a book to a local park and basically spend the day lazing around on a picnic blanket and reading.

Livingoncake · 24/08/2019 01:03

Does it matter if eyebrows are raised? Why do you care what strangers think of you? Just live your life!

Bravelurker · 24/08/2019 03:12

I tend to go out on my bike armed with food, drinks, and book /smart phone. I am absolutely convinced I look fascinating to other people in the park. But realistically I don't think they really notice.
You obviously don't need a bike.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 24/08/2019 03:14

Lying in the park with a blanket and a book and a ton of M&S food (sausage rolls, sandwiches, dips, crisps) sounds like heaven.

I've been abroad for 10 years and I'd kill for an M&S lunch.

BlueWonder · 24/08/2019 04:00

If you go to an open air cafe or beer garden, take a couple of 'props' with you
...book/paper/cardigan/scarf/umbrella etc. You need something non-valuable to leave by your drink if you nip to the loo or back to the bar for some crisps, or the cafe counter for a teaspoon etc. Otherwise people in pairs and groups will snaffle your table or well meaning waiting staff will clear your table. Grrrr! Hmm

NoSauce · 24/08/2019 05:19

I honestly don’t think anyone would even notice, would they? I wouldn’t for sure. I would and have done it too. Go, have a nice day!
