Hi there

Can anyone from the type of web and photos taken confirm if this is a false widow? I tried to get as close to the spider as possible!

Thanks

@TreacherousPissFlap.. please can you post link to FB spider group.. Thanks.

We haven't seen any fw yet. But there are two huge long-legged ones that have taken up residence in the shed and have eggs. Reluctant to evict as they might help keep any fws away.

We have a few thin legged ones in the house. I thought they were called daddy long-legs spider. We call them ghost spiders.

That isnt true. people aren't "suddenly noticing them because of their bad press". People are noticing them because they are taking over and killing all other spider species as they spread all over the UK and Ireland.

It isnt scaremongering either , I had one in my shoe which bit my foot which hasn't healed 3 months later. It is far worse than a wasp sting (if you aren't allergic to wasp stings ) due to the secondary bacterial infections caused by the bites etc
This should help demonstrate the power of a false widow.

now it is indeed the case that they tend to keep to themselves most of the time, however, it is also very true that they will hide in your clothes or even the little one's cot bed which happened 3 times in our new house.

the web picture posted is a very good one as you will usually find those webs in corners of rooms. false widows tend to hide in the day and come out at night .

Ooh, we’ve got one of these in a toad hotel in the garden, how exciting. I will have to name it now that it has a species and everything though!
Thinking ...’Rees-Mogg’as it is poisonous!

Dizzywizz · 24/08/2019 07:29

We have giant house spiders and there seem to be a lot more this year.

Lozzy25 · 24/08/2019 07:41

I live in a top floor flat with a balcony that goes the whole way around my flat and all around the balcony are trees! It's like living in a tree house which is nice but we get so many false widow spiders because of living in the trees! We have been here for 4 years and have never been hurt by one, I just leave them be Smile

Anyone know what this spider is? It lives in our garden but I'd rather it didn't come into the house.

This is the one boosey, it gets a bit samey after a while and could at times be called the false widow group, but there are some really helpful and experienced members on there. The excitement when someone spots an unusual type is great Grin

Hi I have just had this come up on my feed as I have shown interest in the subject. It is correct that for most people these spiders are not a problem but for myself it was a different story I was bitten by one a few years ago and ended up in hospital for 3 days in a really bad way 😬 my leg swelled and bacame red hot and my blood poison levels were through the roof it attacked all my joints and I still have issues now. I'm not trying to alarm but I never hear much else other than they are harmless which is unfortunately far from the truth.
I have many false widows around my property and have not had a single bite since being aware of the dangers. They are very placid and will hide when they see you so if your careful and informed then I feel this is a safe position to follow.

Gobbolinocat · 24/08/2019 10:14

@dadicated

Yep I know serval people who have suffered like the ones in your pic, iv antibiotics, hideous swelling and a friend of friend nearly lost his arm

They are small and vicious, and can cause awful damage. I am not going to risk my dc ending up like that from a non native invasive spider!

Gobbolinocat · 24/08/2019 10:15

Lewis the problem comes when they get into beds or clothes! Humans don't tend to start a fight with these creatures and humans do leave them alone

Branleuse · 24/08/2019 10:37

False widows are not taking over and usurping our other spiders lol.

Oldraver · 24/08/2019 11:40

We have loads in our garden though I was tad annoyed when one took up residence on my beer fridge

BooseysMom · 26/08/2019 20:53
