Is this a False Widow?

Hi there

Can anyone from the type of web and photos taken confirm if this is a false widow? I tried to get as close to the spider as possible!

Thanks

Looks like it. If you've got one you've got more. We get them, despite normally leaving spiders alone, those I squash on sight.

magicstar1 · 23/08/2019 07:33

Trust me...it’s a noble false widow. The flash distorts her back a bit, but I don’t like getting too close.

Gobbolinocat · 23/08/2019 08:16

I don't understand why people don't kill them. I know many people who have ended up very ill from their bite, one had one on her ankle, she was sat down ie wasn't doing anything to provoke. Another had one in her bed and another put arm into coat and it was in there.

Non natives also threaten our own species.
Iv antibiotics, severe swelling, one friend of friend huge guy, very fit nearly lost his arm!

I'm terrified of spiders but rarely kill the big ones but without a doubt I would kill them.

LadySybilPussPolham · 23/08/2019 08:27

Had a couple in the house recently which I gently moved outside after seeking advice. They were quite docile but as pp said, some people do react badly to bites.

I am on a Facebook spider group after seeking advice about a beautiful velvety spider I found in my kitchen.

My house and garden are full of them, doesn't matter what I try I can't get rid of them 😭 north Wales not south England

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/08/2019 08:52

We have these living in our conservatory. The most annoying thing is the way they drop their “leftovers “ onto the floor... worse than the DCs for mess 🙄.

fblake · 23/08/2019 08:53

Thanks @Jun982ele that will be why I haven't seen it this morning.

Do they have any natural predators? @Sab100 I have a suspicion that my garden is full of them too.

LOL at everyone posting photos of their pet spiders. Brilliant!

What are the really thin long legged spiders that are everywhere in my house at the moment? They are quite big but almost transparent. It occurred to me the other day that I don't remember seeing them before the last few years. Any ideas?

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 23/08/2019 09:22

Yes I’ve got the long legged ones, they are ace at sorting out midges

Branleuse · 23/08/2019 09:24

Yes looks like steadota nobilis.
Its outside so id just leave it alone. They arent aggressive

I think you might be referring to pholcidae or cellar spiders. We have loads of these too but they seem to live separately to our false widows. Especially under and behind furniture. They are very useful as they eat midges (and other spiders) but again... they do leave a mess.....

Firstworddinosaur · 23/08/2019 09:57

Has anyone noticed an increase in spider activity this year? Maybe the weather? OP we have false widows too. I'm scared of spiders but a bit obsessed too.

Branleuse · 23/08/2019 10:10

The long thin spindly ones are cellar spiders. These are brilliant houseguests because whilst completely harmless to humans, they are ferocious hunters of flies, midges, mosquitos and also other spiders. These can take down a giant house spider no problem. Ive seen them eat wasps too

Pinkbonbon · 23/08/2019 15:05

Saw one in south Lanarkshire the other day! Pattern on it's back was almost like it had another white spider on it/scull sorta pattern. Apparently they have established population in the area. Shocked as thought they would just be down south.

PrettyShiningPeople · 23/08/2019 17:14

@magicstar1
Is that not one of these?

LER83 · 23/08/2019 17:23

The outside of all my upstairs windows are covered in false widow spider webs. Our whole garden, despite being a bricked courtyard with hardly any plants, is full of spiders! We've only had one false widow in the house so far, but it was on my daughters windowsill and her bed is under the window so a bit worried incase she gets bitten in the night!

PrettyShiningPeople · 23/08/2019 17:41

Lace web spiders that live around window frames (amongst other places) build similar messy webs, are you sure they’re false widow?

WhatGetsMeDownMakesMeStronger · 23/08/2019 18:06

I’ve been bitten by a fw and ended up with a nasty reaction and cellulitis Sad still see the pincer marks.

Our house is full of them I normally just leave them be.

PrettyShiningPeople · 23/08/2019 19:10

It looks like steotida bipunctata (the one I linked to above). So called because of the two puncture marks you can see on the body.
I think - I’m no expert!

PrettyShiningPeople · 23/08/2019 19:11

Made a hash of that! - steatoda

PrettyShiningPeople · 23/08/2019 19:17

It’s confusing as I think there are 3 different types if steatoda spiders, but they all get referred to as false widow. They don’t all look the same.
I’m not sure how they compare bite wise.
