We’re going to the Royal Mint over the bank holiday and also Castell Coch. What else is there to see with a 5 year old boy that is near? We’re quite partial to a beach (not for sunbathing, for digging or pebble throwing in the sea if no sand) and we’ll probably stay over two or three nights (going tomorrow from London) but haven’t booked anything yet.

TIA 🙂

Caerphilly castle.
Big pit - there is a height/age restriction to go underground.

Starryjup · 22/08/2019 17:00

St Fagans is nice. Techniques, Cardiff Bay.

Sutherndown beach is lovely. You can park up there and walk over the cliff and through the walled gardens to the next beach. It's not far and well worth it Smile

Whitecandle · 22/08/2019 17:02

Definitely st fagans!!

BoxOfBabyCheeses · 22/08/2019 17:02

I second techniquest. It's in Cardiff Bay and thia time of year they make an artificial beach with rides on the bay too, so plenty to do on a day out.

HomewardHound · 22/08/2019 17:03

Thank you both. The Big Pit looks great and DS is tall enough!

Sutherndown Beach looks lovely. Wales is really nice! I haven’t been since I was a child Blush

Barry island has an amazing sandy beach, small climbing wall, nice cafe’s, traditional amusement arcades etc.

Not far away (still in Barry) is Porthceri country park which has a pebble beach, big open space and woodland (oh, and another nice cafe!)

Infinity trampoline park or Boulders indoor climbing both in Cardiff if the weather’s not great, or the National museum in Cardiff (think the snake exhibition is still on).

Penarth has a pebble beach and pier, nice park at the top of the hill from the seafront (decent cafe there too!)

Cosmeston lake on the outskirts of Penarth has some nice walks and a good park (and a cafe!).

You’re spoilt for choice really. Have a great trip op.

What Much said great potential for a few days

Floopily · 22/08/2019 17:20

Mountain View Ranch is not too far from Castell Coch. Porthcawl / Rest Bay is lovely on a nice day.

Floopily · 22/08/2019 17:23

Also this is on at the moment in Cardiff town centre...

All of the above plus if it's raining you could try Cardiff international pool in Cardiff bay, great pool with slides. The rest of Cardiff bay is lovely too. They have a summer beach in the bay currently, also good restaurants.
Mountain View ranch is lovely. Definitely google that one, there's lots to do there.
They have a pretty good shopping outlet at Bridgend, just off the M4. Worth popping in for Clarks shoes, Joules, Lindor, Port Meirion etc.

The Royal Mint is next to a village called Llantrisant, which had a medieval fayre on this weekend. It's a quaint quirky village, good for lunch in the Butcher's arms or afternoon tea in the Polkadot Teapot (plenty of other pubs etc but parking might be busy)

tatyr · 22/08/2019 17:47

Has, not had a medieval fayre!

HomewardHound · 22/08/2019 17:49

Thank you all so much!

What started as a trip to the Royal Mint (how are things made obsessed DS!) became an overnighter when we realised the Bank Holiday traffic may be against us and now looks like we’ll stay a few days and have a proper little holiday.

Really looking forward to it.

😍

Mountain View Ranch has a thing on this weekend so you'd be best to check their website first.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 22/08/2019 18:06

St Fagans is great for a day out. Recently won Museum of the Year.
Barry Island is far better than the artificial beach in Cardiff Bay.

Berthatydfil · 22/08/2019 18:30

Indoor surfing in the Cardiff pool or outdoor water park in Cardiff bay, think that had to be booked though.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 22/08/2019 18:36

If you're there for the week... if you fancy driving a bit further then go down to the Gower. It has so many beautiful beaches, or pop that on the list for next time.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 22/08/2019 18:36

Sorry weekend damn autocorrect

MosquitoInAJamJar · 22/08/2019 18:53

Sully beach is in the vicinity of Barry and St Fagan's, pebbly with rock pools and if the tide is right you can walk over to Sully Island. Used to go loads as a child, I love it there, enjoy.

CottonSock · 22/08/2019 18:56

All of the above, st Fagans and the ranch, techniquest. I feel so lucky to live in a place with such amazing attractions. There is a train you can get to Barry island, might be busy this weekend and seagulls on attack mode.

doleritedinosaur · 22/08/2019 18:58

Sully has dinosaur footprints if you do get there.
We went to Porthcawl last month & had an amazing time, amusements, amazing beach & the best chips I’ve had in ages.

lucylouis · 22/08/2019 19:35

Aw all my school trips were at Techniquest and St Fagans. I still go St Fagans annually I just love it there!

CutsAndSnoozes · 22/08/2019 20:07

Between Penarth and Barry, behind the recycling center where you can climb down to the fossilised dinosaur footprints. Wish I actually had a decent way to signpost people to that. I just knew the way.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/08/2019 23:03

@CutsAndSnoozes
This is the best I can do
