Cranberry Juice DRINK for UTI?

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/08/2019 14:56

DH went out for cranberry juice (uti, dr won’t see for me three days 😩) and came back with a juice drink with water and sugar in it. Will it work it should he go out again.

It’s M&S and says 300 cranberries in every carton (1 litre).

I don't think you can buy pure cranberry juice, it would be quite tart. I've only ever seen cranberry "drinks" on sale.

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/08/2019 14:59

Ooh right thanks.

Neither will help really I’m sorry OP. Very little evidence that cranberry supplementation is effective for UTIs. If you’re not too unwell with it just drink lots of water over the next couple of days to flush things out as much as possible.

Cranberry juice won’t do anything for a uti. Can’t believe the GP won’t see you for 3 days. Any way you can get to an OOH. You need antibiotics. Drinking loads of fluid doesn’t flush an infection out so drink sensibly but not shedloads. Too much liquid diluted the antibiotics. According to research it’s best to keep the urine as acidic as possible to kill off bacteria. I’m on Hiprex which turns the urine into formaldehyde 🤪.

If you actually have a UTI and not cystitis I'd go to a walk in and get proper treatment.

I like Co-op own brand cranberry juice - no added sugar although it does have sweetener

vinergartom · 21/08/2019 15:01

You can buy pure cranberry actually, I love it Smile

thaegumathteth · 21/08/2019 15:02

You can get cranberry pills at Holland and Barrett. They’re not useful for treating UTIs but my urologist recommenced them for prevention.

However your pharmacist should be able to prescribe you antibiotics.

For me, drinking loads of water has always helped. At the very least it makes it less painful to pee.

Personally I have found cranberry juice works but could be placebo.

Luxesoap · 21/08/2019 15:03

inwood cystitis is inflammation of the bladder caused by an infection.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 21/08/2019 15:03

"If you actually have a UTI and not cystitis"

Cystitis IS a UTI.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 21/08/2019 15:04

I get the cranberry tablets.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2019 15:06

OTC 'cystitis relief' treatment may help a bit - sachets of sodium or potassium citrate.

In the interim it will help and an uncomplicated UTI where there’s no extensive history of UTIs/cystitis or kidney infections can often resolve without antibiotics.

vinergartom · 21/08/2019 15:06

I mean water will help, not cranberry

stripeyronnie · 21/08/2019 15:07

The pharmacist can now prescribe 3 days antibiotics for a simple UTI, I've had them do it quite a few times. I'm in Scotland though so it may be different.

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/08/2019 15:19

No history of kidney etc problems since a child.

This sounds silly but I was bitten by mosquitoes quite badly and it came on the next day. I don’t suppose it could be related?

I don’t think there is blood in my urine but the pain is horrible. Our surgery are crap quite frankly. I have insurance but I need an nhs referral letter and they won’t even give me that. If I’m still bad tomorrow I’ll go to a private place (I presume that’s what posters mean by walk in)and get a referral 🙄 so my insurance kicks in.

DH had to do that. It cost £50 but worth it.

Buy some Cystopurin over the counter to try and ease it a bit.

PancakeAndKeith · 21/08/2019 15:55

I used to get it cystitis dreadfully and the only brand that worked was Ocean Spray. It’s got the highest concentration of cranberries.
Also the Oasis powder you can buy works a treat.

Ohyesiam · 21/08/2019 15:58

People mean an NHS walk in centre op. You go in and wait. Google for one near you.

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/08/2019 16:08

Ohyesiam Thank you. I googled and it says the local hospital? Would that be right? A&E? I don’t think it warrants A&E! I wish I could just get a drs appointment 🙁.

BizzzzyBee · 21/08/2019 16:12

Cranberry juice is full of sugar and not good for you. Plain water is best. In terms of stopping the pain, the only thing that works in my experience is a urinary painkiller called phenazopyridine. You can buy it under the brand name Azo, the chemist is unlikely to have it but you can get it from Amazon. It doesn’t treat the infection but it stops the pain immediately.

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/08/2019 16:15

The stupid thing is, they get a dr to ring you and then that dr says if you are still ill in three days ring back, and then you ring back and they say make an appointment and then when you go they say I’ll write a referral letter because you have insurance so I’m taken off the nhs books 🙄.

It’s as if the nhs drs work for the insurance company at fending people off. I’ve only used the insurance a couple of times in 15 years, I’m not a time waster!

Does your local hospital have a walk in, or just an A&E? We have a big hospital with both about an hour away, a medium hospital with just an A&E about 25 minutes away and a medium hospital with a walk-in centre about 30 minutes away. If you're not sure where your nearest one is, 111 will be able to find it for you. They'd have doctors who could see you, you'd have a bit of a wait but not usually as bad as A&E.

Benefitofthedoubt · 21/08/2019 16:19

AnchorDownDeepBreath I don’t know, it just comes up when I google my postcode on the nhs walk-in site.
