A&E or no?

I've had pain in my left calf (and occasionally thigh) for about a week now, and my lower leg looks ever so slightly swollen. Pain is worse after exercise but still there even when still. It's been quite bad today.

It's very difficult to get a GP appointment here so would it be sensible to go to urgent care/A&E tomorrow morning? I don't want to waste anyone's time but am worried that it could be something serious. TIA.

No. It would be sensible to call your GP. If it can wait until tomorrow it is not an emergency.

A&E is not an alternative.

Beelee · 19/08/2019 20:31

Out of hours GP?

slavetolife · 19/08/2019 20:32

Is there any heat/redness? This could be a blood clot/dvt and these are serious.

111

Lovelydovey · 19/08/2019 20:33

Could be a DVT in which case A&E would be appropriate.... I’d call 111.

yeraballoon · 19/08/2019 20:34

Call 111 and take their advice rather than ransoms on the internet

TheMonaOgg · 19/08/2019 20:36

Sounds like a soft tissue injury? I'd be more concerned about a DVT if it wasn't swollen I think. Is it hot? TBH you'd probably best ring 111 and see what they say.

TheWildAndTheCurious · 19/08/2019 20:37

I'd call 111, they are best to advise you.
It does sound like a DVT which can actually be very serious but at this time of night the best A&E can do it offer you blood thinners as a precaution. You would have to come back in the next day to dvt clinic and for an ultrasound (I work in ultrasound). Is there a number for the dvt clinic on your local hospital website? They would offer you a same day appointment as like I said dvt is treated very seriously.

ben236 · 19/08/2019 21:04

Yes, I'm worried about it being a DVT which is why I'm asking. No heat or redness, but I know they're not always present. I've been pretty sedentary recently which is why it could be that.

I'm only in my late teens so I don't really know what to do, my parents don't care about this stuff and I can't speak to them about it. I went on the 111 website and it said see GP asap. But it's really hard to get an appointment where I live so again, I don't really know what to do.

Three posters have advised you to call 111. Might that be a plan?

Accountant222 · 19/08/2019 21:13

I had dvt, my leg was slightly swollen and used to ache, so I'd do A & E, I'd complained for 15 years about it, it was eventually picked up on a CT scan for something else, all hell let loose when they found it, conveniently forgot I'd been complaining of discomfort for 15 years.

BusterTheBulldog · 19/08/2019 21:22

Do you have a minor injuries unit near you? Might be worth popping in there.

yeraballoon · 19/08/2019 21:24

I'm only in my late teens so I don't really know what to do

Phone 111 and describe your symptoms to them. They will tell you what to do.

timshelthechoice · 19/08/2019 21:25

Call 111. Can you see a practice nurse?

Fairylea · 19/08/2019 21:27

Are you on the pill? If so your risk of DVT is slightly higher than most and I would go to a and e with those symptoms.

ben236 · 19/08/2019 21:31

I'll call 111 in the morning as I can't right now. No I'm not on the pill. Yes there is a minor injuries/walk in centre near me, which is probably more sensible now I think about it. Thanks.

Why can't you call just now op?

taybert · 19/08/2019 21:41

Have you tried to get an appointment with a GP?

TheWildAndTheCurious · 19/08/2019 21:41

Don't go to a minor injuries unit. If it is a dvt they are not set up for that kind of thing and will send you to a&e anyway. Ring 111! Why can't you do it now? Dvt is very serious OP!

FenellaMaxwell · 19/08/2019 21:43

And you can’t use whatever you are using to post on Mumsnet to contact 111 because....? Hmm

MidnightMystery · 19/08/2019 21:48

Just go to AnE it will be best to get checked out especially if you've had it for so long!

Why can't you call OP? If your parents don't care then don't not get seen because of them! It's your health and that's most important x

Redcherries · 19/08/2019 21:50

I can’t call 111 on my iPad which I’m posting on.

Op, I’m sorry to hear your parents aren’t supportive in these situations, especially as you’re clearly worried. In my area we can request a phone appointment with a locus dr at the gp’s and they can call you in if they feel you need it checked or offer advise over the phone so that might be worth asking for. Hopefully it’s nothing to worry about and is a soft tissue injury but it would be good to get checked and set your mind to rest.

Rarfy · 19/08/2019 21:51

Sounds like a blood clot which is definitely an A&E job if your gp is closed. I would definitely go. Better to be safe.

FenellaMaxwell · 19/08/2019 22:03

@Redcherries you just need to install the NHS 111 app.

MrsMozartMkII · 19/08/2019 22:05

A&E.

My dvt presented in a very similar fashion.
