Glasgow

Came home yesterday after a two night stay. What a lovely city full of lovely people. DH and I were there for a gig but ended up seeing pride, staying in an amazing hotel and having a blast. What a contrast to the London theatre trip we did a few weeks ago with DD where tramps were pissing in the streets and there was a general air of unease (go to London frequently and usually love it I must say)

I will definitely be going back.

I prefer Edinburgh. I work in
Glasgow and hate the bit outside central station in Gordon Street. Full of folk
Smoking and poor homeless folk trying to find a place to sit.

roughtyping · 19/08/2019 22:06

@LucilleBluth I was recently in Manchester for a couple of nights for anniversary - we loved it! Brilliant city.

roughtyping · 19/08/2019 22:08

@peppersneezes000 the transport museum definitely, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, Kelvingrove Park, Botanic Gardens for a look at the fish! Further afield Mugdock Country Park is great for wee ones. Loads of family friendly places to eat in town and the west end as well.

roughtyping · 19/08/2019 22:09

In fact Jacques in Finnieston, close to Kelvingrove, do chocolate fondue which your kids might enjoy!

NoWordForFluffy · 19/08/2019 22:12

My 5 and 6 year olds love Kelvingrove park and museum. They're so excited to be going back next weekend!

BearFoxBear · 19/08/2019 22:16

The indoor snow centre at Braehead is great for wee ones too, you can book a family sledging and hot chocolate package and just hire the clothes/boots you need!

Dieu · 19/08/2019 22:19

@Likethebattle

It's embarrassing, isn't it?

LucilleBluth · 19/08/2019 22:25

Every city has its social problems, especially after years of Tory cuts. Believe me, Manchester is no better and London is horrendous for litter and homeless people. Much more than it was ten years ago.

It's not a reflection on Glasgow.

BearFoxBear · 19/08/2019 22:30

And as if Edinburgh is any better!

LillithsFamiliar · 19/08/2019 22:34

I'm so glad you enjoyed our city. I was wondering who was staying in the Blythswood on Saturday. Now I know it was The Cure and you of course! Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/08/2019 22:34

@Roughtyping
Do we share a name?
Im still up here, heading home after Denny's breakfast tomorrowGrin
Dd is living on the Southside and loving it so there's nothing left in the small town for me anymore

Dieu · 19/08/2019 22:44

That area has always been dodgy, even when I was a student in the city more than 20 years ago! It's just much less obvious in Edinburgh city centre.

To the poster who asked for suggestions of things to do, I've heard the Transport Museum in Glasgow is really worth a visit.

willstarttomorrow · 19/08/2019 22:55

I love Glasgow! Late DH was Edinburgh born and bred so it was a contentious subject. I now live in an amazing city in the North of England and DD was born here but out of the two I would choose Glasgow . Less pipers and shortbread! To be fair to late DH he grew up in Leith and had an amazing childhood as an urchin of immagrant parents running wild in the Botanical gardens before Edinburgh became what it is.

Ohflippineck · 19/08/2019 22:55

Love Glasgow. A rare city where there are so many things of interest for adults and children, much of it free. The people are brilliant, welcoming and friendly and the public transport is easy, frequent and the cheapest I’ve travelled on in the UK.

One of a couple of places we would like to retire to.

Dieu · 19/08/2019 22:57

Yes, I really envy the underground system in Glasgow. It's brilliant.
We have trams, and unless you're going to the airport, they're really rather bloody useless.

Ledehe · 19/08/2019 23:00

Glaswegian here. Thank you all of you for your lovely words.

I love being Glaswegian (except all the sectarian shite). We get a bad rep, no mean city, murder capital of Europe etc., but generally people are friendly, the architecture is gorgeous and I think we're all round smashing!

I'm going this Sunday for the 1975. I can't wait!

Dieu · 19/08/2019 23:07

Oh, and don't forget the Science Centre!

ArtificialArctophile · 19/08/2019 23:26

What's the expression? "There's more fun at a Glasgow funeral than there is at an Edinburgh wedding" 😃

rededucator · 19/08/2019 23:31

I'm glad you enjoyed visiting us. For your next visit check out some of the many museums (all free bar science centre) transport museum is brilliant and I recommend visiting a comedy club of which there are many!

twattymctwatterson · 19/08/2019 23:32

Ah this thread fills me with pride. People make Glasgow and all that

rededucator · 19/08/2019 23:35

Scotland Street Museum is free and brilliant! (Note all the stereotypical Scots pointing out the free activities Grin)

LucilleBluth · 19/08/2019 23:39

I was singing 'here we, here we, here we fucking go' with the crowd 😀 A tradition I believe.

LillithsFamiliar...all that extra security and executive transport outside the hotel was for me and DH 😀

The next event that's up there that tickets our fancy and we are back like a shot.
