Best bottle suggestions for a newborn?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 18/08/2019 17:21

I'm hoping to mix feed once baby arrives although obviously that depends entirely on baby.

I'm trying to be mega organised due to the timing of babies due date but all the information on bottles and teats and sizes and shapes is sending me down a google rabbit hole. Instead of wasting any more time working out the differences I thought I'd come and ask the experts here if anyone had any suggestions for what bottles to buy which would best support mixed feeding?

Thanks in advance. Grin

This thread is a little old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for the best baby bottle for combination feeding, we’ve recently updated our best baby bottles page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their babies. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I would avoid Tommee tippee. The teats are very short and are designed poorly. My ds had feeding issues with them so we switched to MAM and they were so much better for him. We saw a feeding specialist and she said to use anything but TT

I used the Mam bottles for DS and really liked them. They're great for travel too as only need a microwave to sterilise them.

I started with the first year size which was fine. If your baby is struggling to get milk out then up the size.

You can get good offers on Mam bottles at Amazon if you keep and eye out

Mam teats on Avent bottles worked well for us.

Also avent Phillips are very good

I am an NICU nurse and in my experience if you Intro es bottles early enough you can use pretty much any bottle. My advice would be to spend some time establishing breast feeding, then crack on with bottles as early as possible. This is controversial, even among HCPs I know. But in my experience, once a baby can breastfeed they don’t tend to get nipple confusion. OTOH if you introduce bottles too late you will struggle and may never manage to establish bottle feeding (I didn’t manage with my babies as I left it too late). In my unit we like MAM bottles - but it’s just personal preference, even cheap ones from Poundland will do Smile Good luck!

SummersB · 18/08/2019 17:27

Christ yeah, avoid Tommee Tippee like the plague!

hairyturkey · 18/08/2019 17:27

Mam every time

DreamingofSunshine · 18/08/2019 17:30

MAM bottles, and dummies. Bring able to sterilise them in the microwave was very useful.

Thegracefuloctopus · 18/08/2019 17:31

Another for Mam. Tried TT and they were utterly shit

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 18/08/2019 17:31

Owww so many helpful replies so quickly! Thank you everyone who ahs commented thus far. It's great to see lots of people's suggestions are similar in which to get/avoid no one ever seems to tell you all the niggly little details like this when you are pregnant so it's super useful to have lots of frist hand experiences.

Very interesting about not using TT bottle any other reasons to avoid?

@HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone I found that lots of air got into TT bottles, gave DS a very upset tummy

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 18/08/2019 17:33

We tried Mam because I'd red threads like this but baby rejected them. The only ones that worked for us were Tommee Tippee!

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 18/08/2019 17:34

Sorry *read

Pepperstripe · 18/08/2019 17:34

Tommee Tippee are great for my little one. No issues at all.

cookieoclock · 18/08/2019 17:34

We loved the tommee tippiee ones. No issues with them.

PuffHuffle5 · 18/08/2019 17:38

Mam worked best for us. Also used Nuk and Avent. DS seemed to prefer the Avent ones as he got older, but Mam were best as newborn (I mixed fed too).

I realise that's always a risk and its definitely going to be mean I have at least 2 different types just incase. Its so useful just to hear what other parents do/do not use however.

No one really mentions bottle feeding when you attend classes etc let alone what types of bottles to use.

Mam teats work well for us, but he has less wind/reflux on dr browns.. just can’t latch on the same but manages.
He can’t work Tommee Tippee bottles for love nor money and we got landed with a faulty batch of the colic straw ones.. customer service was pants told me just told us to cut the vent open, had an issue with the steriliser (was running too hot on the plate so dry boiling/burning the plate) and they claimed initially it was fine, then it probably wasn’t sterilising, then it was fine.. because every time I used it after descaling it these black n orange marks came back.. even running empty. They said it was a mineral deposit initially I did explain soft water/one use/12 year old kettle still looks new on the inside but they couldn’t care. Wanted me to post it to them to investigate (had been used 4 times) and would then possibly refund me £13.. not near the original cost.. took it to Argos who refunded me and told me about others with the same issue. Wouldn’t trust them now personally.

20viona · 18/08/2019 17:42

We have got mam bottles and they are great.

PaddyF0dder · 18/08/2019 17:44

We really liked Doctor Brown bottles. Our twins were premature, and they also make a really small size for newborns/preemies.

CTRL · 18/08/2019 17:47

I used Tomy Tipee until I discovered scent bottles. Can’t remembwr what ones they were but were hourglass shaped and my babies LOVED them.

CTRL · 18/08/2019 18:42

AVENT - not scent lol

PuffHuffle5 · 18/08/2019 18:58

Hehe @CTRL I read scent and thought they’d invented a bottle with a special type of smell to entice baby to drink Grin not a bad idea really.

maidenover · 18/08/2019 19:02

I’ve mix fed using Tommee Tippee with two babies, including my current one and it’s fine.

I do have one Mam bottle though as I like being able to sterilise without a steriliser.

Kpo58 · 18/08/2019 19:16

I found the cheap narrow necked bottles were best, but the wide necked bottles are easier for making up power formula.
