The bastard fruit flies ....

MsKhan · 16/08/2019 18:54

are driving me mad! I've tried everything; all fruit in fridge, bananas in cupboard, no food left out or dirty dishes in sink, my bins are integrated and I change the bags daily .

I googled it and it said they're attracted to damp wet stuff so I even got rid of my sunflowers out of utter desperation. Sad

But the bastards seem to be multiplying by the day.

Please give me some kind of nuclear level chemicals because it's fucking wet outside, and inside the fruit flies and the kids are driving me up the wall. Ta very much Grin

You can set out fruit fly traps... maybe google the recipe but it’s something like a combo of fruit juice or cider vinegar plus water and washing up liquid. Really really worked for us.
As to how to prevent the fuckers ever turning up again, can’t help you, sorry!

MsKhan · 16/08/2019 18:57

Also I have tried the apple cider vinegar in a small bowl with abit it fairy liquid ... it does actually catch and kill the fuckers but my entire kitchen diner stinks of vinegar and everyone walks in making a face Hmm

Ah @Popskipiekin cross post! Might have to persevere with the vinegar traps then 😣

You can just use normal apple juice with a bit of washing up liquid. No need for cider vinegar.

Rikalaily · 16/08/2019 23:03

I have a glass with some banana in it, covered with clingfilm with a few small holes in it, catches loads after a day and the banana has started going gooey. No smell and just make a bigger hole and let the hot tap run through to wash the buggers down the sink, then reset.

Melroses · 16/08/2019 23:04

Time flies like an arrow;
Fruit flies like a banana.

MrsBertBibby · 16/08/2019 23:07

Put cling film with holes on the dish with vinegar, less smell, and adios fruit flies.

WhoopiGoldbergsCat · 16/08/2019 23:07

The only thing I found that worked was bowls of balsamic vinegar, cling film over the top with holes polked in.
I had bloody hundreds of the things, cleared up in 3 days after traps left.

GroggyLegs · 16/08/2019 23:14

Is it in the kitchen?
Try flushing the drains with boiling water and bleach and deep cleaning all around the taps/ shelving under the sink.

Also bleach your bin container if you can - they will lay eggs anywhere sticky.

LillithsFamiliar · 16/08/2019 23:19

I'm just here to read everyone else's advice. I have fruit flies and no answers Grin I'm going to try the vinegar traps.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/08/2019 23:20

I got some ugly yellow window stickers from Amazon. They were pretty cheap, delivered the next day and only had to have them up for a fortnight or so. Problem went away completely.

daisyboocantoo · 16/08/2019 23:21

I use raspberry vinegar in my traps, and cover them in cling film. No smell and no flies.

PancakeAndKeith · 16/08/2019 23:22

I only opened this thread to post that Melrose.

No actual help other than don’t bother with fruit.

RightOnTheEdge · 16/08/2019 23:27

They are a nightmare!
I had some last year and managed to get rid of them quite quickly by not having fruit out in the fruit bowl but they are driving me crazy this year Angry

I have tried all the advice and nothing is getting rid of them 😣

Melroses · 16/08/2019 23:36

I only opened this thread to post that Melrose

PancakeAndKeith I was trying not to, but the banana reference in the previous post made it irresistible Grin

Spiderpants · 16/08/2019 23:48

They love prosecco with a tiny bit of washing up liquid in, the buggers dont escape that, catches loads

NomDeQwerty · 16/08/2019 23:57

They're slow enough to suck up the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner.

RightOnTheEdge · 16/08/2019 23:59

Between these, the thunder bug invasion and a wasps nest in my bedroom wall I'm losing my mind a bit!

Luscinia · 17/08/2019 00:04

Carnivorous plants work well for fruit flies. Sundew plants in particular.

Choclips · 17/08/2019 00:29

Empty inside bins and check that no other food source left out. Pesky kids left fruit in bedroom !

RainbowMum11 · 17/08/2019 01:10

My SM recommends white wine (or cider) vinegar in a little dish/saucer - seems to attract them.

MsKhan · 17/08/2019 10:17

Thanks for all the tips everyone, I left traps out last night but it's only caught a few.

I was wondering if they're coming for the method rhubarb smell as it's got a sweet smell and I use it all over the kitchen ? Should I switch to a more chemically smelling one I wonder

We have them at the minute too, we have a small plastic cup of cider vinegar and washing up liquid to catch them. And we pour boiling water down the sink too as they like to lay eggs in the drains and the water kills them, windows and doors open every day to get as many of them to fly out as possible.

Asta19 · 17/08/2019 10:38

The best traps I made were out of old jam jars, punch a few holes in the lid and put an inch or so of beer in. Got rid of them all and they haven’t come back.

Deadringer · 17/08/2019 11:01

I do the traps too, but with just some fruit and water, pineapple works best. We catch dozens in it every day. Great tip about boiling water down the drains, will do that too.
