How many coats do you DC have?

My DC (2, 4, 11) are very outdoorsy and want to play outdoors in all weathers. The smaller ones will play in the garden (mud kitchen and partly covered climbing frame) in the rain and yesterday we went to a park and they were running around happily in rain/mud. Nursery let them play out in wet weather too as they have a canopy.

They always have a couple of winter coats each to allow for washing and usually a thinall in one for the garden to layer up underneath and a thin raincoat/mac.

I mentioned to DH earlier than I needed to get the 4yo a new raincoat as he only has thick coats and a puddle suit and he said that most kids only have one coat anyway?

Which made me wonder if that is true and if so how do they manage all the washing if they have mud magnets like mine.

4

nursery jacket - waterproof with removable inner layer
winter coat - because the nursery jacket gets filthy/wet and gets washing machined and doesn't dry overnight
light summer caguole - thought I lost it when we moved house but found it again
ski jacket - handed down from older cousin, will probably fit in 2 years time

Summergarden · 15/08/2019 23:43

1x light raincoat in spring/summer then 1xwinter coat for A/W season.

I couldn’t be doing with storing lots of bulky coats!

TreacherousPissFlap · 16/08/2019 00:23

None - DS is a teen and has no need for coats Hmm

30 coats? Shock

Mine have only ever had 2 at any one time. A good warm winter one, and a light raincoat which also acts as a spring/autumn one. Can't see the need for any more.

OhMsBeliever · 16/08/2019 01:51

One thick winter coat and one waterproof lightweight coat for scouts/camping. And a load of zip up hoodies.

My youngest has hand me downs and the next oldest are twins so he always has loads of coats. Grin

BenWillbondsPants · 16/08/2019 04:40

Normally 2. One black one for school and another 'nice' one for the rest of the time.

Fatted · 16/08/2019 05:13

Two each. Heir and a spare for when one needs washing.

HopHoppityHop · 16/08/2019 05:20

3-in1 rain coat so they can use in summer + 1 extra fleece liner.
Soft shell windproof fleece.
Winter coat.
Ski coat (doubles as spare winter coat).

They've had that since age 3 when the hand-me-downs stopped! They're 7&9 and last spring they also asked for a puffy gilet each.
DD also has a denim jacket (never worn) that she was given as a b'day present.
DS has a second winter coat this year as I misbought online Blush

Zoflorabore · 16/08/2019 05:21

Dd (8) has at least 5 I can think of but need to buy new ones. She will have a separate one for school.

I've never known anyone to just have one coat, especially when you can get 4 seasons in one day in the UK.

I tend to go for quality over quantity though now she's older. Her best ever coat was from Oilily, was a summer mac in her school colours and cost £127, lasted 2 years and was washed at least once a week.

I hate seeing dirty coats on kids though.

Loads - rain jacket, cagoule, wind proof layer, posh coat, school coat

Sirzy · 16/08/2019 06:08

A decent winter coat and light summer jacket (he won’t go out without a coat on ever) and then a cheaper in between coat used when the seasonal one needs washing.

Namechangedtoprotect · 16/08/2019 06:23

2
Winter coat with hood and pac a mac. If it's the summer and a bit chilly we all wear hoodie, in a light shower we get wet then dry off.

TravellingSpoon · 16/08/2019 07:33

2 each. Raincoat and a big coat.

thisisthetime · 16/08/2019 07:38

Mine are also out in the mud all winter long. They have a body warmer which is also used for layering when really cold, rain mac plus a few pairs of waterproof trousers, 1/2 winter coats and a lighter coat. They tend to walk around mud splattered a lot as I hate washing anything waterproof too often.

randomsabreuse · 16/08/2019 08:01

4 yo has a cheap Aldi ski jacket, a medium weight waterproof and a couple of light waterproofs (1 is a hand me down from friends). We have her next ski jacket stashed for when she eventually grows out of the current one.

Would never want fewer than 2 season appropriate coats so 2 light waterproofs with space to layer plus a heavier coat would be my minimum - largely because she is difficult if she doesn't get enough exercise!

EvaHarknessRose · 16/08/2019 08:10

Similar to others but the nirvana is a really good waterproof in school acceptable colour that fits well and looks good but also can accommodate fleeces or blazers underneath.

This doesn’t exist so we often have a school coat, a school puffa coat, a coat for d of e, and family outdoorsy stuff.

Equimum · 16/08/2019 08:19

Mine have one winter coat each, which is normally waterproof. I tend to buy a 3-in-1 from Mountain Warehouse or the fleece lined waterproof from Frugi. If it’s really cold, I add extra layers underneath.

They then have one decent lighter waterproof. At the moment they both have fisherman style coats. These are worn when the other coat is too warm, as well as when wet.

They then have either a puddle suit or thin waterproof to go with waterproof trousers for things like forest school, camping etc. These are normally cheaply bought from places like Lidl or Regatta. Again, they are big enough that I can layer underneath.

Our kids are really outdoorsy, and we find this combination plenty.

formerbabe · 16/08/2019 08:24

One winter coat each. Ds has an extra raincoat that he specifically needed for a school trip.

Washing isn't a problem...they are 8 and 11 and we live in London so don't get especially muddy.

If they do need washing, I stick them in the machine in the evening and they're ready by the morning.

formerbabe · 16/08/2019 08:25

They did have more coats when they were babies/toddlers, because they got grubbier and also coats are much cheaper for younger children.

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 16/08/2019 08:27

Rural living, scout camps, cycling to school in all weather, my kids usually have 3 coats. One good, properly waterproof waterproof, one good waterproof and warm winter coat and one winter coat that was a hand me down and may not be fully waterproof any more but will do in a pinch or situations where I know they will get filthy.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 16/08/2019 08:34

Generally at least 2 season appropriate coats each at least. But we live near the Peak District so often get muddy.

JPduck · 16/08/2019 08:36

7 yo has her main winter coat and a waterproof coat for when needed

Tartan333 · 16/08/2019 08:41

2 x Winter coats each
1 x Summer raincoat each
1 x Autumn coat (transitional, inbetween!)
1 x denim jacket

hoodies too

Camomila · 16/08/2019 08:43

Did any other parents of little ones think 'I'll get the bright yellow fishermans jacket so I can always find it' only to realise all the other local nursery/playground parents had the same idea?

happypotamus · 16/08/2019 08:43

We went coat shopping recently.
DD1 is 8, and now has only one coat. It is one that is a waterproof coat with a detachable fleece inside, so it is both a rain coat for summer and a winter coat. She could probably do with a smarter coat if/ when I can afford one.
DD2 is 4, and has a raincoat for summer, a winter coat that is warm and waterproof, a rainsuit and a smart coat for parties that my mum bought when DD1 was 4. I have kept DD1's coat from when she was 4, which is too worn out for everyday use but can be worn while DD2's coat is in the wash after forest school or muddy play.
