Something over the counter to help me sleep

Just that really.

What (tablets?) have you found helpful?

Any other tips?

At the moment I will drink wine to help me sleep but obviously that’s far from healthy so I’d like to try something else.

Ear plugs, black outs, no phone/kindle or tv in room. The right scent for you.

Cbd oil

00Sassy · 15/08/2019 07:52

Thank you.

I don’t think noise bothers me so ear plugs not necessary.
I have that lavender pillow spray and keep my bedding fresh, so bedroom smells lovely.

I DO have the tv on, will try not to.

Will look into cbd oil.

I wonder if anyone could recommend any of the tablets I can see over the counter at the pharmacy, any of those worth it?

Night Nurse.

EducatingArti · 15/08/2019 08:05

Piriton makes me drowsy.

MorrisZapp · 15/08/2019 08:07

Ntyol is good, Sominex is stronger. Take at least an hour before going to bed and don't use for the first time if you've got to get up super early. They might give you a bit of a hangover.

OldGrinch · 15/08/2019 08:08

Deffo Night Nurse, get the liquid version in the bottle rather than tablets.

00Sassy · 15/08/2019 08:08

Thank you, I’ll take a look.

@EducatingArti
I take Piriton regularly anyway at the moment so not sure about that but thank you.

Nytol one a night. Not the herbal version. Or ask for Boots/pharmacy own brand of that. I find half a tablet is plenty

AnkleWarmersAndPixieBoots · 15/08/2019 08:10

Phenergen tablet.

Spam88 · 15/08/2019 08:20

Make sure you tell the pharmacy you're taking piriton though as that may affect what sleeping tablets you can use.

00Sassy · 15/08/2019 08:25

Brilliant, thank you all.

I will do @Spam88 good point.

Night Nurse
Antihistamine
Promethazine

Ellieboolou27 · 15/08/2019 09:15

Night nurse liquid is the king of sleep 💤

TimeIhadaNameChange · 15/08/2019 09:39

Warm milk and nutmeg. Not too much of the spice as it can case hallucinations and has other side effects, but a couple of grates of a seed or max 1/4 teaspoon and it knocks me out within about 20 mins. If I use it too regularly the effects wear off but it's good for a few nights.

Haggisfish · 15/08/2019 09:41

Tesco do a sleep aid tablet that is a drowsy antihistamine.

Reallybadidea · 15/08/2019 09:51

I have thunder storm/rain sounds playing quietly. I find that very relaxing. I really sympathise - I had a really important presentation earlier this week and I couldn't sleep at all the night before. It was like torture Sad

Nyctophilia · 15/08/2019 10:03

The only thing I've found that works for me for chronic insomnia is Benadryl, the one with acrivastine not piriton
I've tried literally everything

RezCowgirl · 15/08/2019 11:10

@TimeIhadaNameChange You need to eat about a jar worth of nutmeg to feel the hallucinogenic effects from nutmeg.

pottedshrimps · 15/08/2019 11:23

Melatonin is good, but you need to start at the lowest dose otherwise you can get drowsiness the next morning.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 15/08/2019 12:10

Melatonin, as already suggested, is good. I've been using it for years. It helps get you to sleep but not necessarily to stay asleep (though I find that once I've been asleep it's easier to drop off again). Yes, start with lowest dose - you can buy 1mg tablets.

Our body produces melatonin naturally anyway so it's perfectly safe, as long as you're sensible.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 15/08/2019 12:12

I should have said; not sure where you can buy it other than online. Los of different types available.

Repetitivestraininjury · 15/08/2019 12:40

Sorry, but some of these suggestions are just plain stupid and possibly dangerous, no medical professional would advocate the long term use of medicines that happen to have sleep inducing side affects, night nurse has a distalgesic, (paracetamol), and antihistamine isn't a sleep aid its a immune system suppressant and like all active drugs they come with side effects especially if used long term, which may happen if you come to rely on them as a emotional prop to sleeping,,, sorry for the rant, the only one that I would consider is Melatonin, which is the derived from skin pigment.

Marking place as dh is struggling at the mo with sleep Watching with interest

SpamChaudFroid · 15/08/2019 12:53

Doxylamine succulate is the strongest antihistimine, it's on par with some prescribed hypnotic medications. Just take half a tablet as they're very strong. I get mine from ebay, (Kirkland Sleep Aid) as I've not seen it for sale otc in pharmacists.
