Something over the counter to help me sleep

Just that really.

What (tablets?) have you found helpful?

Any other tips?

At the moment I will drink wine to help me sleep but obviously that’s far from healthy so I’d like to try something else.

Does your phone or tablet have a 'night mode' setting?

Allegedly the strong blue light from screens used in the hours before bed stops the natural sleep hormones from kicking in, some devices are fitted with a warmer light that you can set to come on at a time to suit you.

On dd's ipad, it's found by going to Settings, display, brightness, Night Shift.

This anti histamine is indeed a sleep aid, ffs. www.drugs.com/uk/tesco-sleep-aid-25mg-tablets-leaflet.html

I have struggled with insomnia for years, and the best thing to have helped me, with no 'hangover' in the morning, is CBD oil.

I vape it, as I vape anyway, which I believe is a particularly effective way to take it. So not sure if the tablets are as good, though I do know that the dosage of ones at Holland and Barrett's etc won't do much for you.

Also good for anxiety.

If you’re going to be rude about other responses
Repetitivestraininjury I think you need to get your own facts right. Melatonin is a hormone. It’s not derived from a skin pigment. Are you confusing melanin and melatonin perhaps?

I find the herbal Nytol works well for me. I try to only use it when I really need it, so my body doesn't get too used to it.

aintnutinchanged · 15/08/2019 13:25

Boots own brand (cheaper than nytol and just the same)

CottonSock · 15/08/2019 13:28

Nytol (Or own brand boots), but doesn't work once my insommnia kicks in .last night took one at midnight feeling hopeful, still awake for hours. Somminex made me groggy.

CruellaFeinberg · 15/08/2019 13:38

I use Diphenhydramine - Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine mainly used to treat allergies. It is also used for insomnia. Its sold over the counter in the USA

antihistamine isn't a sleep aid its a immune system suppressant

CruellaFeinberg · 15/08/2019 13:39

sorry - entered to early, what did you mean about antihistamine isn't a sleep aid its a immune system suppressant - could you explain a bit further (not meaning to be goady)

PullingMySocksUp · 15/08/2019 13:41

Not the PP who said it, but release of histamine is a response by the immune system. When I learnt about immunology we were taught it was a pointless response, just for interest.

QueenOfPain · 15/08/2019 13:52

Sominex is okay.
Diphenhydramine in whatever generic pharmacies own branding it comes in is really effective.

Try this free app.
“Nothing much happens”.
A woman reads some soothing stories without much of Story but lots of detail. Really sends me to sleep,
I set my phone timer to switch off after 40mins.
It really works. My husband agrees too.
It just takes your mind off the usual thoughts that go around in your head.
Also second the the wind down routine before bed.
No screens for the last hour, dim lights, no caffeine after 2pm.
Cooler bedroom.
Hope it helps.

no medical professional would advocate the long term use of medicines that happen to have sleep inducing side affects, night nurse has a distalgesic, (paracetamol), and antihistamine isn't a sleep aid

Wrong. GP prescribed a strong antihistamine for DS to use as a sleeping pill.

the only one that I would consider is Melatonin, which is the derived from skin pigment

Wrong again. It's a hormone. One that a lot of autistic people, like my DS, don't have enough of and have trouble sleeping because of it.
