What white paint for North facing lounge

Hi guys.

I have a north facing lounge which is always dark and dingy!! It's currently painted in Dulux Chic Shadow.
I've made the conscious decision that I need to paint it white to brighten it up. But what white?

I'm really not set on painting it PBW because I'm scared it'll be cold looking. I've read online a warmer white would be better. But I don't want cream.
Have seen a few posts online saying Timeless white?

What's your thoughts?

I would just go for a pure white as anything else tends to lead to cream. Just make sure you still give the room life with other colourful things. We have hand painted canvases, colourful curtains and the such to take away from the fact it’s just white. We do have a dreaded feature wall but that’s now behind the sofa due to rearranging so we don’t sit looking at it.

Do they have to be white? I've 2 northfacing rooms we painted in darker colours. Apparently it's to do with creating warmth. They're brighter than they were when they were magnolia. Ones in F&B stiff key blue and the others in French Grey (its like a heritage green)
Also have an Ammonite North facing room, its grey white. It looks fantastic. Changes with the light. Ceilings and doors are white

They say avoid a grey/green base white and go for something warmer. Timeless is nice - it definatley hints towards a creaminess but its bright. I painted my lounge PBW and my next door neighbour went for timeless. We both had brown leather sofas and a red rug so pretty similar. I think mine looked more modern but in certain lights it looked a bit grey and dull. Hers looked a bit softer and didnt get that grey tinge in low light.

We painted a room with very little natural light in Dulux White Cotton matt emulsion last year and are really pleased with it, I'm not an expert but it seems soft and slightly warm.

CleanHonestGoals · 14/08/2019 19:37

We've just painted our room in Leyland trade Snow Queen. I absolutely love it. It's light and bright whilst not being white.

I echo what Rosere said, unless your heart is set on white I would recommend a darker colour. We have a west facing lounge which is small and dark and various shades of light colours made it look sad. Denim drift (darkish blue) feels amazing, cosy but not oppressive.

This is from when we started so woodwork not at best but looks lovely with white wood and pink and copper accessories. It's softer looking than the photo too Smile

I saw the white cotton but worried it's more of a cool tone?

Could you use one of those light-reflective paints? We used one in a bedroom and they do throw an extraordinary amount of extra light in. It was a trade paint specially mixed so a bit pricey but worth it.

haverhill · 14/08/2019 20:16

DH says it was Light and Space Frosted Dawn.

CatPunsFreakMeowt · 14/08/2019 20:16

I love your curtains, where are they from?

Whitecandle · 14/08/2019 20:28

@CatPunsFreakMeowt they are from next 😊 expensive but the only ones I could find in the perfect mustard colour!

I love the blue!!

Totally get what you're saying about not using white but I really want a white (ish) colour. If I was to keep a colour I'd keep the grey as I do love it but want to make it feel warmer and cwtchier in here (sorry I'm welsh lol)

Trying to find a warm white without it being too creamy but also not a cool white is really hard!!

@haverhill I've never heard of those light paints!! I'll have a google!!

Dulux Almond white is good for this - warm without a hint of yellow, and 2 or 3 coats gives you a lovely rich feel

userxx · 14/08/2019 20:41

I've used Dulux almond white in my north facing lounge and absolutely love it. Grab a tester pot and give it a go.

userxx · 14/08/2019 20:44

And your grey carpet and sofa will look great with it too 👍

userxx · 14/08/2019 20:49

Freshly painted.

We have Dulux jasmine white in our east facing living room and it’s lovely.

Whitecandle · 14/08/2019 21:05

Think I need a good few tester pots!

Definitely going to try - timeless, white cotton, almond white.

Dulux Nutmeg white has a warm pink undertone similar to almond white. Both great.
