A year to lose at least 6 stone.

Doable?

swissmilk · 12/08/2019 23:42

It is totally do-able, but you'll have to be strict!
What's your starting weight?
Low carbs and high fat seems to be the diet that works well for a lot of people, there's lots of info and support on the boot camp threads here.

Bananajuice · 12/08/2019 23:42

Yeah it is I lost 6.5 stone in a year :)

TubbyMonkeh · 12/08/2019 23:45

I'm 17stone.

OP posts:
Stravapalava · 12/08/2019 23:46

Why specifically a year? Does it matter if it's not quite 6.5 stone?

EdHelpPls · 12/08/2019 23:48

That sounds like a lot to me, but some people find they lose a stone in the first 2 weeks though it slows down after.
Do you think you can keep yourself focused on the goal?

I have a similar amount to lose ( 5st) with no exact goal date but I expected 14-18 months if I can stay focused.
I listened to a YouTube video interview with the author of Atomic Habits and it’s about building in ways to make good things more automatic, and “bad” things harder to accidentally do. ( not a new concept but listening to it got me fired up!)
One thing I’m doing is bulk cooking so I always have a balanced and nutritious meal available so I don’t “just grab a quick sandwich”.
Also I put my vitamins in front of the coffee mugs so I see them when I go to make morning coffee, and take them then.
I’m working out ways to easily build more exercise in too.

TubbyMonkeh · 12/08/2019 23:50

I'm going on my first holiday.

I want to be 11 stone.
I can't do Keto, have a very veggie tastes. I can't abide all the meat and fat.

OP posts:
TubbyMonkeh · 12/08/2019 23:52

It's 84lbs.

I have 52 weeks.

So evens out at 1.6lbs a week.

I think that's achievable?

OP posts:
Lucked · 12/08/2019 23:56

What about intermittent fasting. On non fast days I would advise avoiding processed carbs and go for Mediterranean diet with large amounts of veg.

What is your diet currently?

TubbyMonkeh · 12/08/2019 23:58

My diet is junk food hence being 7 stone overweight.

A lot of frozen pizza type stuff. Takeaways. A lot of bread. A lot of biscuits, chocolates and crisps.

Just very poor.

OP posts:
Hotterthanahotthing · 12/08/2019 23:59

Works out at just over 1.6 lb a week so yes doable.
I worry that you ask though.I have been over weight for years and am only now loosing weight and sticking to a diet because I am in the right head space. This means if I have an off day or celebratory week I enjoy it,don't binge but relax and back on the diet at the end.
Find a diet that suits,I use the ww app as I am rubbish at portion control,do you need group support ,friend to join or certain weaknesses to avoid.
You can do it but anyone who says it's easy really doesn't get it.Good luck OP.

I lost 8 stone in a year, from 19 to 11. I averaged a stone a month for the first 6 months and about half a stone a month after that.

I did it by counting calories, no eating between meals, and gradually incorporating more exercise and movement. No special diets or weight watchers or slimming world.

I started by writing down every single thing I ate from breakfast to biscuits to secret chocolate stashes to tasting as I cooked. After that, I started cutting down on the sweet stuff then counting calories in everything I ate.

I maintain my weight by counting calories, walking and cycling. Have managed to keep it off for a few years now.

There may be a few people who say "but starvation mode!", there is no such thing as 'starvation mode' unless you are actually starving to death. It doesn't start after a couple of hours of no eating.

It is doable and it is easy to lose weight but the hard part is getting yourself in the right place. And remember, if you have a blow out one day and eat more calories than you need, just carry on with the new lifestyle you're beginning.

Hotterthanahotthing · 13/08/2019 00:08

Another thing that helps is planning the week ahead so that you don't just grab anything.
If you're mostly veggie which I am it's easier.Ditching the snacking is harder but it's a habit and a tougher one to break.

Lucked · 13/08/2019 00:10

Also an important thing to remember, when you have a bad month or two, is that you will feel so much better at 15 st and 13 st and so on. Your life isn’t on hold waiting for 11 stone. Certainly by Christmas you could feel so much happier with yourself and look great on Christmas Day.

Side note - I know it’s a bit early but with Christmas last year I was very good over the party season. I had a couple of meals out with work and friends but didn’t eat any of the usual Christmas crap/food in the run up. I let myself off the hook between the 24th and the 31st and then went back to it.

Fr0g · 13/08/2019 00:27

A friend reccomended author Geneen Roth - her focus is emotional eating; I found some of her books really helpful, It may be worth taking a look if emotional or binge eating is part of the way you currently eat.

CorbynsComrade · 13/08/2019 00:46

It’s doable. You need a calorie deficit of 500 a day to lose a lb a week so if you’re looking to do 1.5lbs a week you’ll need about 750 more calories out than in a day. Doesn’t matter what you eat, it’s 99% about calories in vs calories out for weight loss. Find out your TDEE and work from there. Get into weight lifting if you can.

Blankiefan · 13/08/2019 06:45

I was 17 stone three months ago. Just under 15 now and want to lose eat least another 4. But right jo2, I'm only focused on 14 stone. It's such a long way otherwise.

I already feel loads better - physically and psychologically.

I'm tracking calories; having previously lost 4- 5 stone doing WW or SW - lost my and put it on 4 times. I'm finding it easier/ less restrictive to track calories am using MFP.

Have a Google for James Smith PT. He's on Facebook or has an online academy thing- which I haven't joined but is free to look at the tools. He is an online PT and in truth seems like a bit of a cock personality-wise however if you ignore that, he speaks really good sense. I've found his approach really sorted my head out.

Good luck.

feelingverylazytoday · 13/08/2019 08:19

I've lost 5 stone, but it's taken me over 2 years.
I'm a little bit concerned over why you've set yourself a time limit, to be honest. I think it's much healthier and more realistic to accept that it might take a lot longer, and it really doesn't matter in the long term. What matters is improving your health, not hitting targets.

notonthebeachrightnow · 13/08/2019 08:22

Why did it take you so long feeling?

TubbyMonkeh · 13/08/2019 08:56

I don't think it is unrealistic.

It's well within the healthy weightloss limits of 1 to 2lbs a week.

And I've spent years faffing about with no motivation, gaining and gaining.

I feel like this holiday is an opportunity to reach my goal and I'm being totally realistic with a year of work.

I feel I can do it :)

OP posts:
feelingverylazytoday · 13/08/2019 08:57

Why did it take you so long
I was just living my life really, not even trying to lose weight a lot of the time. I think thats what they mean by a lifestyle change rather than 'going on a diet'. I didn't even aim to be the weight I am now, it just sort of happened, and now I'm at this point it's really just become natural to me, things like eating smaller portions, not buying snacks, and being more active.
And the PP is right, you actually feel better with every stone you lose (or at least you do if you exercise) so you always feel a sense of achievement, rather than feeling like you've failed if you hit a plateau or have a bad few weeks. Also, most people find that their weight loss really slows down after a while, and I would imagine that could be pretty disheartening if you've set yourself a time limit. Of course the OP might be fine with that but to me it's just adding stress where it doesn't need to be.
Thats just my take on it though, I was just adding a different point of view, not saying anyone is wrong.

TubbyMonkeh · 13/08/2019 09:39

If you managed to lose 5 stone 'not even trying' in 2 years if I put everything I to it loosing the same amount in a year should be a doddle ;)

OP posts:
Seashell80 · 13/08/2019 10:17

@TubbyMonkeh I weighed 17st 2lbs at beginning of July and have so far lost a stone so 16st 2lb as of this morning, I managed it by tracking cals (MFP), no snacking, eating more fruit and veg and no alcohol! So far it's been pretty easy but I'm expecting the next stone to be harder. I'm focusing on a stone at a time as this seems more manageable. Already I feel tons better-joints less achy, breathing better,no snoring and my clothes fit again!
Good luck 👍🏻

Craptop · 13/08/2019 10:20

I had weight loss surgery ten weeks ago and have lost four stone. Can't recommend it enough!

Craptop · 13/08/2019 10:22

(I had the op six weeks after I started thinking about it)

TubbyMonkeh · 13/08/2019 10:27

Crap I can't afford it unfortunately :(
