Solid shampoos

Help I can’t find one I like. Today my hair feels waxy and lank from another one I’ve bought and tried.

I really want to find one (and a conditioner if I can one that I like too) I like to reduce the use of plastic bottles

I did use one from Lush, but not longer shop there.

I’ve tried 4 different, homemade/small producers now.

I would love to find a solid shampoo that worked well, too.

marmiteandmarmalade · 11/08/2019 16:01

Why have you stopped using the Lush one?

ChoudeBruxelles · 11/08/2019 16:04

marmiteandmarmalade Because I now longer choose to spend my money with them.

No longer!

I have been trying a solid shampoo and conditioner for the last week and my hair feels horrible, oily and sticky.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 11/08/2019 16:06

If you are getting waxy residue it might be due to hard water. I've found the Beauty Kubes a good option if that is the case, and the Solid Bar Company is often spoken on here in glowing terms.

In addition, you might benefit from a hair rinse. I use conchus halo as it's not vinegar based myself!

And finally, if all else fails you can get "normal" shampoo from Faith in Nature in whacking great tubs which will go a long way towards plastic reduction.

Hope that helps!

I've only tried the coffee lush one. It is grand for travelling when you don't have much space. I probably wouldnt use it all the time though. It doesn't lather much. I have very greasy hair and skin and I didn't notice any issues.

Is it Lush's ethics? I rarely go in because they hassle so much, but I just kept my earphones in and refused to engage until I was at the till, haha! (It was the only place I knew that did solid shampoo.) I felt a bit rude and I know they are only doing their job, but arggh! Leave me alone!

ChoudeBruxelles · 11/08/2019 16:11

EnterFunnyNameHere do you use the hair rinse then conditioner?

OP posts:
ChoudeBruxelles · 11/08/2019 16:12

Pangur2 yes I haven’t shopped in lush since the anti police campaign last year.

Thanks for this. What timing. I have switched this week to bar soap and my hair feels horrid and waxy so I will be using funnyname’s suggestions (hard water area) once this bar is done.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 11/08/2019 16:13

Have you tried wild-sage.co.uk/product/handmade-natural-vegan-soap/shampoo-bar-rosemary-lavender?

jenthelibrarian · 11/08/2019 16:16

I was very disappointed by the Beauty Kubes shampoo and conditioner and would never use again.
They failed to dissolve/melt nicely and large chunks washed down the plughole. My hair felt matted and sticky. I had to start from scratch with my usual products.

ChoudeBruxelles · 11/08/2019 16:19

EmpressLesbianInChair not tried that one.

Problem is there’s so much choice it’s baffling what’s actually good and what isn’t.

We but some from a local shop, but they are made by this company: www.bathbubbleandbeyond.com/. They are the best we’ve tried - lather well and rinse out unlike some others.

I’ve been using it for about a year now. It gets up a good lather & my hair’s really happy with it.

Lessstressedhemum · 11/08/2019 17:13

You need to do a vinegar rinse and persevere. It takes about three weeks for hair to adjust to bar shampoo. If you rinse with a couple of tablespoons of vinegar in a cup of water, it will help with the waxy feeling. Do this a couple of times a week till your hair adjusts then once a week and your hair will be lovely.

WaitingForAGovernment · 11/08/2019 17:16

I’ve tried about five different shampoo bars and have settled on this one. I often don’t even need conditioner after using it.

Dandelion1993 · 11/08/2019 17:21

Honestly the Lush ones are the best.

I have their coffee one and it's amazing. I have very thick hair that gets greasy quickly and it gets through it all brilliantly.

I've tried some from other shops but they felt all soapy and never washed out properly

pottedshrimps · 11/08/2019 17:23

I use the wild sage company one and my hair is nice and clean. It takes about 10 days for the hair to adjust.

ChoudeBruxelles · 11/08/2019 17:46

I’ll try the vinegar rinse and keep going for a bit. Not giving my money to lush dandelion

I love this one www.friendlysoap.co.uk/product/lavender-geranium-shampoo-bar/

Waggily · 12/08/2019 08:19

I bought one from Holland and Barrratt from a company called Ethique. I actually bought a tester box with a solid shampoo, conditioner, face wash and body butter and they are all lovely. And the shampoo hasn’t made my hair lank or greasy or made my head itch like they usually do.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 12/08/2019 08:26

@ChoudeBruxelles I don't bother with conditioner, just the rinse. It makes all the rough bit on your hair lie down again (technical!) so makes it feel lovely and smooth.

With regards the Beauty Kubes you might find it easier to mash them up with water before you shower in a little jar or something to learn what consistency works. You can have them reasonably runny though and if you give them a minute it helps break them down.

Like with non sulphate shampoo, it's more water you need not more product!

EnterFunnyNameHere · 12/08/2019 08:29

Also, ethics aside, the Lush ones work better because they have SLS in, which isn't great for hair! I think there's a school of though that's why we use conditioner- shampoo with more severe cleaning agents strip out everything, which you then spend money buying conditioner to put back!

Everyone's hair is different of course though Smile
