4 week baby - convinced my HV is wrong

Nobhobs · 11/08/2019 15:48

My 4 week old DS seems to be in pain after every feed. Rarely he'll fall asleep whilst feeding, but most of the time feeds end with him pulling off and starting to scream and writhe in pain. After feeds he continues to red face scream and arch his back. He spits up constantly and projectile vomits quite impressive distances. I'm so fed up of seeing him in pain. He'll eventually fall asleep and then wake up wanting more food and I just want to cry as it'll be back to him being in pain. HV says it's not colic or reflux and that he's just greedy, drinking too much milk and throwing up what he can't keep down. He's EBF and feeds every two hours.

Video him and take him to the GP asap.

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 11/08/2019 15:49

Definitely speak to your GP. My ds2 did that and had CMPA which took far too long to diagnose. Our Hv was useless.

MunchyMunchkin · 11/08/2019 15:51

See your gp this could be severe reflux, pyloric stenosis or cmpa. Your hv is not a doctor nor the gate keeper for them.

Dd had bad reflux. Bless her she didn't cry much but threw up most feeds. Eventually referred to paediatrician who said she must be in awful discomfort as her oesophagus would have been burning from the acid reflux. Bring baby to gp - you don't have to take the word of HV when you feel there is more to it.

Nutellaontoast19 · 11/08/2019 15:53

This sounds like CMPA.

Lunafortheloveogod · 11/08/2019 16:00

Go to a gp, video it and show them. Sometimes actually seeing the problem helps rather than describing it.. unfortunately some people exaggerate or aren’t used to possetting so call all spit up vomit.

Any weird poop/rashes/eczema more signs of cmpa? Pyloric stenosis pukes are massive like the whole feed back, it’s also apparently genetic.

ListenLinda · 11/08/2019 16:02

Sounds like reflux. I was you two and a half years ago OP. Video and go to GP, hope you get it sorted

Nobhobs · 11/08/2019 16:04

Deffo not spit up!! My HV had said to always ring her before a GP so was getting frustrated. Will ring GP in morning. Aargh it's so horrible watching them struggle.

Poop mustard colour and seedy, he poops a lot and have plenty of wet nappies. No rashes or any other symptoms.

Always contact your gp about medical issues not the hv. Sounds like he definitely needs to see the gp.

MrsAmaretto · 11/08/2019 16:08

What?? Ignore that piece of crazy advice for starters - ring the GP or visit a pharmacist directly if you are worried about your child.

I agree with pp it sounds like reflux or cmpa or something. And the fact your HV doesn’t recognise this is ridiculous.

VenusTiger · 11/08/2019 16:10

Aw, OP does he have tongue tie?

Yerbumsootthewindae · 11/08/2019 16:12

Def take to GP and don't ever feel you need to talk to HV before taking a child to the doctor, I think your HV is very wrong to say that! When mine were small I spoke to the HV when I wasn't sure if there was an issue or not, or maybe when I had a random question which i didn't feel merited a doctor's apoointment - when I knew they were ill I went straight to the doc. Good luck and hope you get help soon.

VenusTiger · 11/08/2019 16:15

I ask as my DS had it OP:

...Digestion starts in the mouth, and so tongue ties can lead to digestive problems like colic and reflux....

It’s also frustrating and can be painful for baby. Have a look at his tongue underneath

hungergame · 11/08/2019 16:15

Sounds like my DS, it was CMPA and soya allergy, I had to cut both out of my diet.

Spookydot · 11/08/2019 16:17

You don’t have to have ANY dealings with health visitors. I have three children and after my first baby I was given such shit advice I decided to have nothing else to do with them.
Go to the doctors, and if they don’t listen, insist on a referral to paediatric doctor.
Good luck. You know your baby best.

Sunlight82 · 11/08/2019 16:17

Definitely go to GP. We ended up bottle feeding in the end due to intolerances to everything and mine sounded exactly like yours.

SunshineCake · 11/08/2019 16:17

Please report the unhelpful health visitor.

My EBF baby fed two hourly for six months. Wasn't greedy. His tummy was tiny Hmm.

Millie2017 · 11/08/2019 16:31

Sounds a lot like my DD who is severely allergic to a number of foods. I was EBF. You could try cutting all allergens out of your diet. Please pursue, I was fobbed off by HV and GP until DD was 6 months old, tried egg and had an immediate allergic reaction.

Smileforthecamera · 11/08/2019 16:34

My DS is 5 weeks old and is being treated for reflux and CMPA. He has been prescribed new milk and ranitidine- the difference in him is remarkable. He was just as you describe your baby to me- sick, in pain, not wanting to feed but having to feed etc. Go to the doctors and don’t be fobbed off- first doctor I saw said it was him being a baby, the second I saw took me seriously and referred me to our local paeds doctor.

ittakes2 · 11/08/2019 17:19

My son was in pain and had smelly wind - his digestive system underdeveloped and nutramigen dairy-free formula plus ant acids fixed the problem.

PussInBin20 · 11/08/2019 21:23

Maybe just really bad wind - it can be very painful when they’re so young but if it’s worrying you, best go to GP.

Sexnotgender · 11/08/2019 21:26

Your HV is a loon! You can’t overfeed breastfed babies.
Bless him, please go see your GP.

Smurf123 · 11/08/2019 21:37

You can't overfed a breastfed baby but you can have a strong let down which baby may struggle with initially which could cause discomfort and vomiting..
But I would be going to gp.. I would also be wondering about cmpa.. My gp surgery also told me that they will always see a baby until 12 months on the same day if you are at all worried so make sure to tell receptionist age of baby!!
Hope you get sorted and baby feels more comfortable soon..

Vinorosso74 · 11/08/2019 21:48

He does need to be seen by a GP. I agree with video and photographic evidence. One thing I will say is some GPs aren't too good when it comes to BFing issues so may palm you off with infant Gaviscon; on the flip side some are brilliant. I have known a lot of babies intolerant to dairy so the mums have had to stop eating it whilst BFing.
Do you have a decent BF support group near you either? A couple of the women at the one I used were super clued up on issues so although not doctors they are probably more helpful than your HV.
