Have you ever come home from holiday and opened you front door on disaster?

Or something unexpected? The only time it happened to me was when my electrics went off while I was away. I was hot and tired, it was early evening and I knew there was a cold tin of lager waiting for me in the fridge. Couldn't wait. However, I opened the front door to the most horrendous smell. I would say the freezer had been off for the nearly 2 weeks I had been away. I spent the rest of the evening disposing of rotten food and the pool of mouldering blood and gunk in the bottom of the freezer.
I always think of that (now very old) episode of 'One foot in the grave', where they come back to find their house had burnt down. I always breathe a sigh of relief when I see ours is still in one piece, and can't relax until we've had a good check round. (That might be just me though being a bit of a worrier).

Son a positive note though, we once came home to a freezer full of home cooked meals.
My wonderful friend had been popping in to feed the hamster and water the garden etc, and she realised one day the electricity had tripped, so her DH decanted all the defrosting meat and sausages, and batch cooked them into casseroles. We are still BFF and I luvs them.

We came home from a weekend away to discover that DD (about 3 at the time) had fiddled with the cat flap lock before we left trapping our cat inside the house. She had food and water but no litter tray because she used the garden. So she'd been forced to use a few clean clothes left in a washing basket as her litter tray. She was very vocal in her disapproval and the house stank!

All the people (particularly @AnnaMagnani and @TremblingFanjo) who have said their insurance companies were amazing, please can you tell me who you are with? We're buying our first home at the moment and these stories are making me super paranoid about insurance!

AnnaMagnani · 13/08/2019 13:50

I have specialist insurance for listed buildings - apparently the jackdaw scenario is not unusual for them!

MrsGideon · 13/08/2019 13:50

Bump!

MrsGideon · 13/08/2019 13:50

@AnnaMagnani Ah ok. I didn't even know such a thing existed!

@onalongsabbatical

Thank you. MN messages are going straight to my spam folder atm so I have only just seen your reply.

2 dead birds and a LOT of feathers all over the kitchen. Our cat had brought them on through the cat flap. We were away for the weekend and Dparents were calling daily to feed and play with him, but this must have happened on the last morning.

We've come home to the infestation of hungry fleas too. Horrible.

I didn't realise it was so common!

AnnaBegins · 14/08/2019 08:45

Ohhh yes. Had a friend house sit for us. Got a call from a different mutual friend halfway through the week saying don't worry our pets were with her and she'd explain when we got back. Got home and opened the door to two blocked toilets, a sofa full of vomit and mess everywhere, plus an empty wine rack. Turns out friend was secretly a recovering alcoholic who chose our house to have a mental breakdown in. Joy.

ginyogarepeat · 14/08/2019 08:52

Yes, a few times. Once when we'd been on holidays and came back to a leak from the tank in the attic - months worth of replastering and painting! Always have your water come on when away folks Wink

Second time, 2l bottle of Pepsi on top of the fridge exploded whilst we were at work - brown sticky stuff EVERYWHERE! Couldn't figure out what had happened until we saw the empty bottle on the floor.

Nothing compared to some of these disasters, but I remember something from my childhood.

We came home from holiday to find that the woman who had been feeding our cat has pasted these strange, patterned stickers all over every wall of our house and had also put them in my dollhouse. They were impossible to remove and my mum was not happy and I was really cross about my dolls house.

ginyogarepeat · 15/08/2019 17:12

That's very weird @Greyeye! I wonder what her explanation was....

Greyeye · 16/08/2019 07:05

Ginyo I have no idea... she was an extremely strange and troublesome woman. I think she did it just to annoy us.

Horehound · 16/08/2019 07:36

@AnnaBegins wtf why did no one clean the sick? Omg I don't think I could have dealt with that.

AnnaBegins · 16/08/2019 11:14

@Horehound I'm not sure second friend realised how bad it was as she wouldn't have seen the bathrooms so I don't blame her for not cleaning up. Needless to say I no longer speak to alcoholic friend!
