Any dentists around please?

I've had toothache and swollen gums for several days. Saw an emergency dentist today (I haven't been for a very long time, so know I deserve everything I'm getting).

She told me I've got a lot of gum disease and has booked me in for a deep clean and a filling. She said there's no infection and that I didn't need antibiotics. However, she hasn't suggested anything for the pain and I'm in agony. Have eaten hardly anything for four days - just made soup and even that hurt.

I've been taking Solpadine dissolvable, and doing salt water washes. Have been holding ice cubes wrapped in a cloth to the sore side. Dentist has told me to use Cordysol toothpaste and mouthwash, rather than my usual Sensodyne.

Is there anything else I can try, please? Feeling thoroughly miserable, and rather hungry.

Anybody? Please?

You can add in brufen with the solpadeine.

WrongKindOfFace · 09/08/2019 20:16

Ibuprofen and paracetamol are better for dental pain that co-codermol. You can alternate the doses if that helps.

If you smoke then stop as it impairs gum healing.

Thank you.

I don't smoke.

I'm not able to take ibuprofen, due to prescription meds.

In that case probably stick to solpadine tomorrow and maybe speak to a pharmacist tomorrow to see what they suggest?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/08/2019 20:29

Thanks - will do.

Hi there, sorry you are in so much pain, if you have a lot of gingivitis then your gums will be very sore and unfortunately the best way to combat this is clean the teeth making sure you brush the gums as well. This is to remove as much plaque under the gum line which is causing the initial problem. You can use the Corsodyl toothpaste everyday, but I usually recommend patients to use Colgate Peroxyl mouthwash As it won't cause much staining on the teeth as the Corsodyl mouthwash would.

Xx

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/08/2019 20:41

Thanks, Kerrie.

I will try gently brushing the gums too. I've also bought some inter-dental brushes.

I'll try to get some of that mouth wash too.

If anything, it's even worse this morning. My gums behind my bottom front teeth and the underside of my tongue feel swollen and very sore and it hurts to open my mouth.

Hi just saw this message now, did you manage to get the Peroxyl mouthwash? When you brush the gums and use your interdental brushes you will always get an initial acute inflammation which last between 24-36 hours, I know it's very annoying and can be very off putting but this will also go away. How is the pain now? Is it a pain more like a general ache or a specific pain in a certain area?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 19:13

Hi. Thanks for replying.

I've got one very bad tooth at the top corner which hurts a lot, and then lots of pain and swelling in the gums behind my bottom front teeth. I think there might be an ulcer there as well, which isn't helping.

The chemist said that Solpadine was the best pain killer, so I've had two doses of that today, and I've been doing warm salt water rinses too. Brushing the gums at the bottom behind my teeth hurts a lot. Have been shoving Bonjella on them to try to numb it all.

Feel so crap. Have managed to eat a tiny bit of mashed potato today -that and a soft bread roll are pretty much all I've managed in the last four days.

Sorry to moan - feeling very sorry for myself.

Try difflam mouthwash or spray from a pharmacy.

Clove oil really helps for tooth pain.

Coldhandscoldheart · 10/08/2019 19:20

You could try some anbesol liquid instead of bonjela - I can never get gels to stay in the right place. Or difflam as pp suggested can be pretty good.
Sympathies.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 19:23

Thanks, both. I burnt myself on clove oil once as a teenager, and have been scared of it since!

Currently trying whisky on a bit of tissue in the most painful spot.

Oh you poor thing, salt water washes will help. Hopefully you'll see your Dentist soon xx

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 20:23

Thanks again, Kerrie.

I'll probably try to get to see an emergency dentist tomorrow. Mine hasn't helped at all with the pain and I'm not due to see her for a fortnight. I'm wondering if an emergency dentist might be willing to maybe put a temporary filling in.

I second the suggestion about anbesol teething liquid. I used it on my wisdom teeth.

breatheinskipthegym · 10/08/2019 20:29

I had a flare-up of this during pregnancy. Gengigel gel helped, as did swapping my (rotating electric) toothbrush to a sonic brush. I bought one cheaply on Amazon for about £25-30. Still have to undergo all the dentist treatment, but I went from being unable to eat and feeling pain pretty much 24/7, to only noticing the issue when I look in the mirror. The redness and inflammation has also subsided considerably.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 20:30

Thanks, Moving. So far I've got:

Anbesol gel
Bonjella
Solpadine (trying to limit these to 4 a day, but think I'll have to have another two)
Gengigel gel and spray
Cordosyl mouthwash and toothpaste gel
whisky
salt washes
Sensadyne toothpaste

Boots are making a fortune out of me. Kind friend donated the whisky.

Sorry, Breathe. Crossed posts.

I looked at Sonic toothbrushes today but could only find 'Medium' and thought I might be safer with soft brushes at the moment.

Kerrieanne85 · 10/08/2019 20:32

Where abouts are you? You should be able to get a temp filling done if you book an emergency appointment and you're in pain

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 20:34

Birmingham - will phone in the morning.

pipiandbelle · 10/08/2019 20:45

Clove oil on the painful area. Bonjela on the gums. Antiseptic mouth wash? Hope you feel better soon x

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 20:56

Thanks, Pipi.

Apparently I can't take more than 4 Solpadine in 24 hours, so am now using an ice cube as a cold compress.

Tempted to just get very drunk instead!

OP posts:
pipiandbelle · 10/08/2019 20:58

Yes have a drink. It will take the edge off.
