Any dentists around please?

I've had toothache and swollen gums for several days. Saw an emergency dentist today (I haven't been for a very long time, so know I deserve everything I'm getting).

She told me I've got a lot of gum disease and has booked me in for a deep clean and a filling. She said there's no infection and that I didn't need antibiotics. However, she hasn't suggested anything for the pain and I'm in agony. Have eaten hardly anything for four days - just made soup and even that hurt.

I've been taking Solpadine dissolvable, and doing salt water washes. Have been holding ice cubes wrapped in a cloth to the sore side. Dentist has told me to use Cordysol toothpaste and mouthwash, rather than my usual Sensodyne.

Is there anything else I can try, please? Feeling thoroughly miserable, and rather hungry.

I had awful tooth pain on Xmas day once. Drowned it out until I could be seen!

pipiandbelle · 10/08/2019 20:59

Ps clove oil really works- if you can get to a chemist atm.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 20:59

Sounds very sensible. Unfortunately the donated pain-relief whisky is the only booze in the house, and I don't actually like the stuff.

Orajel.....stuff of Gods

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 21:09

Thanks, Why. I've got some of that too, but it only lasts a couple of minutes.

Bicarbonate of soda, apply to the painful area. Don't swallow it's disgusting

Allli · 10/08/2019 21:22

You poor thing, toothache is awful. No words of wisdom here except to keep taking the anti inflammatory meds and brushing/rinsing per the advice you got at the pharmacy.
You defo can’t wait two weeks in that pain. Phone the dentist and tell them you’re in agony and can’t eat or sleep and please can they fit you in. You may have to sit and wait but I’d totally go if you can spare the time. Oral B electric toothbrushes are the most powerful. I used to use the battery kids Colgate ones prior. They weren’t hard and they’re small so fit in the nooks and crannies. Good luck and as the late poet Pam Ayres said “I wish I’d looked after my teeth”, as I totally do wish that. But I am looking after them now.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2019 21:26

Thanks, both.

A children's toothbrush is a good idea. Will try the baking soda too - pretty sure there's some in the cupboard.

I've managed a glass of milk, so at least I won't starve!

To me the swelling suggests something stuck under the gumline. It'll hurt but floss those teeth. Go as deep as you can get it, even when it bleeds. Be vicious. I have wisdom tooth that is a funny angle and agony if I get food stuck under it for few days and don't realise. Goes away within the hour once I get it out.

onedream · 10/08/2019 22:25

Don't know where exactly you are in Birmingham but there is a emergency dentist in great Barr called Scott arms dental practice..I can only recommend they literally saved me when I was in agony they open every day until 11pm..hope you will get it sorted soon..

mommybear1 · 10/08/2019 22:38

Hi OP I second what @onedream has said they also have a 24 hour number if you google. Failing which have you looked at the dental hospital in Birmingham city centre? They treated a colleague of mine and were amazing - good luck

CallingDrJones · 10/08/2019 23:25

Make sure you get the Max Strength orajel, it's the best stuff ever.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2019 10:53

Thanks all. I managed a good long sleep, which has definitely helped me to feel more human. This morning there's a more gentle throbbing in the worst tooth, rather than utter agony, and the gum swelling and ulcer both seem to have calmed down a bit.

I'm going to try to eat something and see how that goes. Yoghurt, maybe?

There's a dental hospital at pebble mill, have you googled? Can't remember if they're open on a Sunday. You may well have missed triage by now though.

DeathMetalMum · 11/08/2019 11:10

Orajel extra strength. Is designed for tooth pain only available over the counter, it may be better than either bonjela or anbesol. For pp who said paracetamol was better than co-codamol. Co-Codamol has the same amount of paracetamol in as a regular tablet and has added codeine in also so is actually one of the strongest painkiller you can get over the counter - solpadine is very similar - slightly higher amount of codeine than the regular co-codamol so a good choice.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2019 11:11

Thanks. Yes, I know. I actually think it's starting to feel better though. Fingers crossed.

Thanks, Metal. I'm actually managing without pain killers at the moment, which feels like a good sign. Will get some more Solpadine today though.

Thanks again, all. I've got an appointment at the dental hospital tomorrow. I've actually managed to eat a tiny bit of soup and drink a homemade banana smoothie today, so am feeling a bit more human than I have done for the last couple of days!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/08/2019 14:59
