Snacks on long haul flight when trying to lose weight

Apart from nuts, what can I have in my handbag on a flight to the USA so that I don't ruin everything I've achieved so far? Usually it's all about Haribo for me; obvs no longer an option...

Don’t eat anything and use it as an opportunity to fast. After all, you’re not burning any calories, are you?

bunslinger · 08/08/2019 06:23

Nuts are a somewhat antisocial choice - other people may be allergic, and planes are very confined spaces. They're also very energy-dense, despite the good macronutrient profile.

Mehmehmeh19 · 08/08/2019 06:23

I wouldn't take nuts incase of allergies, fasting a good shout with plenty of water to drink

Sammysquiz · 08/08/2019 06:25

You don’t need snacks, you’ll be sitting down for hours so your calorie needs will be tiny!

londonloves · 08/08/2019 06:27

My experience of long haul flights is that they feed you at pretty regular intervals so I agree not sure you will need any snacks. Maybe an emergency banana...

1fluffydoodle · 08/08/2019 06:28

Don't take nuts, you shouldn't take the risk as others on the flight my have a serious nut allergy.
I'd take something like a bag of popcorn and some fruit if you're looking for a snack.

eurochick · 08/08/2019 06:28

Popcorn, rice cakes. Both filling but low calorie.

Waffles80 · 08/08/2019 06:29

And in the sane world where fasting on a long-haul flight sounds utterly painful:

  • celery and cucumber sticks
  • dried meat (biltong type thing).
  • cooked meat (at start of flight when it will still be cold).
  • hard boiled eggs (poor other flyers!)

This is based on low carb/high fat diet.

AuntieStella · 08/08/2019 06:30

Not nuts

Aside from allergy issues, they are very calorific for their volume (even though they are good fats)

Do you need snacks at all? Longhaul it's likely that some food will be provided and so you should not need more at all. If it is not, then take fruit, whole meal sandwiches with not-too-calorific filling and popcorn (your own air popped if possible, as very low calorie cooked to any which used oil)

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 08/08/2019 06:30

Another vote for popcorn

growlingbear · 08/08/2019 06:31

I agree with people suggesting it's the perfect time to fast. Airline food is so disgusting anyway. Take a lot of water with you, maybe some smoothies too, and just rest and watch films or listen to music. I always fast on long haul flights and it makes adjusting at the other end so much easier. People often get constipation after long haul but not if you fast.

ReasonedCamper · 08/08/2019 06:34

They bring you a meal Confused

Leave the bread roll and the desert.

In the real world I have never taken snacks on a long haul flight.

Nor fasted.

JingsMahBucket · 08/08/2019 06:34

I usually buy or take nuts, a couple KIND bars, some cheese that can last the flight (cheddar or Babybels) and maybe a few slices of dry sausage. Some whole wheat crackers, oat cakes or Wasa crackers possibly to go with the cheese. Also fruit like a banana, clementine or prunes.

I pack snacks to have just in case there are delays before or after travel because there a lot of delays lately! I’ll also eat a KIND bar while standing in line either in immigration or the taxi stand, both of which tend to be long.

Due to a medical condition I need to have snacks on me. Before OH really understood it he’d get annoyed at me having food around all the time because he was very much of the food is just fuel mindset. His mind changed a bit once when we were traveling & hit a massive delay after a long day. I offered him a Babybel and he grudgingly accepted it due to hunger and I smiled just a bit smugly. Grin

TapasForTwo · 08/08/2019 06:37

Will the airline not be providing meals? If they are you won't need snacks. If no meals are provided then anything except for crisps, nuts, sweet stuff or anything too smelly.

If you are in the habit of snacking maybe this will be a good time to break the habit.

Not all airline food is vile BTW.

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 08/08/2019 06:40

Ah okay no nuts fair enough. Sorry I should have said, I usually don't find the food served on a plane palatable at all. I guess I could try to eat absolutely nothing but realistically, that might not work. Plus I need to have something with me also inc are there are delays and I am stuck having to make do with the food that's available at the airports, usually overpriced high fat/high carb crap.

TapasForTwo · 08/08/2019 06:42

Which airline are you flying with?

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 08/08/2019 06:47

British Airways (wish me luck!)

We just pick up a meal in duty free, a salad from Pret and take it on board. Have you looked at the special meal options? Lots of choices on there.

ImpracticalCape · 08/08/2019 06:54

If you are low carb then I love cheese and crackers. Make some low carb crackers (google for a receipt) slice up some cheese, shove in a sandwich bag nibble throughout flight alongside your gin and slim. Same for some lovely salamis or hams. Slice and bag up. Maybe some Philadelphia pots to make salami rolls
Get some low carb bread (or make oopsie rolls) fill with your usual sandwich filling

JingsMahBucket · 08/08/2019 06:55

If there’s a (severe) problem with nut allergies they’ll usually tell you before you board the plane or just afterward. If I do take nuts it will be cashews or in the form of the KIND bar. This is also why I have the other snacks as back up in case I can’t eat the nuts though.

The reason why I suggested cheese even though you’re on a diet is because that will genuinely fill you up for longer especially paired with a Wasa crisp. You’ll actually eat less versus eating “light” crisps, etc. If you want to buy snacks in the airport, fruit salad, regular salads, and popcorn are good options.

WalkofShame · 08/08/2019 06:59

You don’t need snacks on a plane Confused. Eat what you like that they serve you and leave what you don’t. As others have said, you aren’t using any calories really so no need to top up and if it’s about boredom take some chewing gum or water.

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 08/08/2019 07:00

Fab, so I am thinking an apple, a banana, a kind bar, babybell, oatcakes, dark chocolate and a packet of mixed seeds from m&s. And lots of water of course.

Jfc, some twatty comments. Telling someone to fast is shitty.
As is the sneering about nuts. Nuts are allowed on flights (I assume if someone is severely allergic they tell the airline and nuts are banned from that specific flight) and super healthy, obviously not in huge quantities and I don't mean the processed KP type.
Food isn't always included on flights any more, and is often unhealthy and nasty. Snacks available in airport shops is very overpriced and limited.
Suggestions for OP:
Nuts
Seeds
Dried fruit
Banana
Popcorn
Flavoured rice cakes
Tortilla chips
Kind, Nakd etc bars
Graze - go browse the website and order what you fancy if you have time, if not some boxes are available in shops

growlingbear · 08/08/2019 07:05

Why is telling someone to fast shitty @Broken11Girl? It's only a few hours.

rosewater20 · 08/08/2019 07:08

It sounds like your last message has it worked out well! I would eat normal healthy meals before the flight that have a good deal of vegetables and protein.

I don't eat plane food and seem to become ravenous as soon the door close so fasting wouldn't work for me. I bring an apple, kind bars, air-popped popcorn and then I also bring protein that I pick up at pret before boarding. I buy two big waters after security, and I make sure to drink as much water as possible on the flight.

I also walk a lot during the flight and do stretches where possible (out of peoples way).
