Snacks on long haul flight when trying to lose weight

Apart from nuts, what can I have in my handbag on a flight to the USA so that I don't ruin everything I've achieved so far? Usually it's all about Haribo for me; obvs no longer an option...

@growlingbear did you miss where the OP said she’s going to the US? That’s at least a 7 hour flight plus going through security or immigration on either side. If the OP eats breakfast she would have eaten anything else for 11 hours. It’s not just a jaunt over to mainland Europe that’ll be done 4 hours. 🙄

JingsMahBucket · 08/08/2019 07:11

Would not have eaten anything for 11 hours, rather.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2019 07:11

You won't 'ruin everything' if you go off plan for one meal. That's disordered thinking and something you need to work on.

The suggestion to just have whatever they serve you and maybe leave the bread and dessert (or ask for fruit) is the best one. Airline meals are tiny so even if it's something calorific like macaroni cheese then the calories in the meal won't be high.

How are you planning to cope in the US? I would have thought the plane journey would be a drop in the ocean compared with eating while you are there.

I like lentil curls and popcorn. Fruit or veg that doesn't need to be in the fridge too.

Heratnumber7 · 08/08/2019 07:27

Nuts are really fattening.
As others said, you get fed frequently on long haul flights, but can't you go 8 hours without eating in between meals?

Pipandmum · 08/08/2019 07:30

If you take something like fruit make sure you either eat it all or leave the rest on the plane. You aren’t allowed to take some kinds of food into America.

If you don't like what the airline usually serves, look into the vegetarian options.

Ounce · 08/08/2019 07:32

Take your knitting and use it as an opportunity to stop thinking about food all the time. You won't starve, honest.

Ounce · 08/08/2019 07:34

most people can’t go 8 hours without eating while they’re awake.

They really can. They might not want to, or be used to, but they absolutely can.

Heratnumber7 · 08/08/2019 07:35

I didn't suggest going 8 hours without eating. I asked if OP could go 8 hours without eating between meals.

I'm not a troll thank you very much although I'm not completely sure what a troll is

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 08/08/2019 07:43

The flight is 9 hours but if you factor in all the time until you're actually on the plane and then until you're actually in the hotel, it is much more than that. Whilst I know that I can go for 8 hours without food, I want to avoid feeling like crap with jetlag and give myself the best chance I can to have a holiday in the USA without undoing everything I have managed so far. As some of you have pointed out, it is going to be incredibly difficult to 'diet' whilst in the USA. Not only that, but it's a road trip, so yeah.

I won't take my knitting in case they confiscate my needles at security, but I'll take my crochet Wink

Nuts are really fattening. They are very nutritious and absolutely fine in 100 calorie portions. I am trying to maintain a BMI of 18 (ED) and I eat nuts. No food suggestions to add, there are plenty of good ones already. You could order a special meal (religious, vegetarian, vegan...) if you think you might find something else more palatable.

LizziesTwin · 08/08/2019 07:50

They won’t confiscate your knitting needles.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/08/2019 07:56

OP, go and have a substantial, and nice, meal before you board. Plane Food in Terminal 5 is good (not cheap though), and there is another “upmarket” restaurant in Terminal 2, if you want to make a bit of a start to the holiday experience. This should see you through the first half of the flight quite comfortably. I would take cheese, crackers, apples and a banana to see me through the second part, along with lots of water to drink. That should be quite manageable.

GoFiguire · 08/08/2019 07:56

Troll hunting is not permitted. Good luck.

Soola · 08/08/2019 07:58

Suck a boiled sweet.

Daffodil2018 · 08/08/2019 08:01

I hate airline food too. I have sushi or a salad at the airport.

For snacks I'd take a fruit salad, salted popcorn and some dried mango. Maybe also some oatcakes which are my go-to breakfast when I'm in a rush.

Pret is your friend here!

superram · 08/08/2019 08:02

You will be fine with plane food, I’ve just come back (and have horrendous jet lag) and I thought food was nice. You can’t take cheese or dairy into us so you must eat what you take.

cookieoclock · 08/08/2019 08:05

Eat what you want within reason, enjoy your holiday and worry about it when you come back. Life is too short to diet on holiday.

JingsMahBucket · 08/08/2019 08:07

@superam yes you can take cheese and dairy into the US.

Also, why are people being so goody to the OP? She asked for advice on one particular subject and people are deliberately being jerks to her.

JingsMahBucket · 08/08/2019 08:07

Goady rather.

stucknoue · 08/08/2019 08:07

Don't eat snacks! They feed you on long haul flights. Nuts are often banned, the last 3 flights I've taken have had an announcement asking people not to eat any nuts they have brought onboard due to a customer with a severe allergy, and nuts weren't served either (mini cheddars instead)
