Do you think Brexit has affected your mental health?

Turniptracker · 07/08/2019 11:48

Was discussing in the car with my partner yesterday about how I feel like Brexit is a constant low level source of anxiety and depression for me. The uncertainty, the lack of clear positives, it just feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel and I have no control over it.
Just wondered if other people felt the same way? That it's actually having a negative effect on their mental health?

It has for me because I'm on a lot of medication & I'm worried that with a no deal it will be difficult to get hold of!!
I just can't stop worrying whatever anyone says.

EssentialHummus · 07/08/2019 12:16

Yup, for the same reasons as you. I’m not British but have lived here a decade. On the one hand we’re researching schools and planning holidays, on the other we’re stocking up on tins and having serious discussions about the merits of relocating to Estonia. Odd, odd, odd.

Roomba · 07/08/2019 12:26

Yes, I feel like there's this ominous cloud hanging over everything at the moment and can;t stand the uncertainty. I've already experienced shortages of vital medication that I take and am really worried that I won't be able to get hold of it post Brexit. I'm also skint so stocking up loads of stuff isn't very feasible, I'm dreading price rises as I'm just staying afloat as it is. I doubt I'll be getting a pay rise or an increase in UC to compensate for everything going up in price! A massive recession won't help my kids as they grow up and try to find work either.

I got my new passport the other week and felt really, really sad when I saw it didn't say 'European Union' on the front.I know it's a silly thing but it depresses me. At least it's not blue, I suppose.

S1naidSucks · 07/08/2019 12:28

I live in NI, so I have the added worry of that fuck throwing us under the bus.

MmmBlowholes · 07/08/2019 12:28

I feel anxiety directly linked to world current affairs but not just brexit; Donald Trump, the rise of knife crime and an undertone of right wing hatred all make me despair for the world we currently live in.

StealthPolarBear · 07/08/2019 12:30

Yes and I'm lucky enough to not be reliant on medication

Soola · 07/08/2019 12:35

Quite the opposite, I am very much looking forward to it. I’m ecstatic that it’s happening in my lifetime.

GCAcademic · 07/08/2019 12:39

I'm dreading price rises as I'm just staying afloat as it is.

I listened to the most unbelievably selfish fucker on Radio 4 yesterday, some retired member of the public who asked if he was worried about price rises in the event of No Deal. He said he and his wife were in a very comfortable financial situation and didn't need to worry about food prices going up. When asked if he could understand that there were people just about managing who would be seriously affected by No Deal, he said, yes, he could but basically didn't really care.

Cinammoncake · 07/08/2019 12:47

A bit, given how divided people are in our country, and how uncaring people seem about those who will be most affected, as GCA gives an example of, and those who'll be affected by medicine shortages too. Very worrying and feels so negative and a backward step. To me it feels like something fuelled by negativity and hatred rather than anything more positive.

BlamesFartsOnTheNeighbour · 07/08/2019 12:56

Yes, I'm a Brit in Europe and trying to put together a very complicated application for nationality and it's been a massive source of stress.

InOtterNews · 07/08/2019 13:01

Absolutely. Have lived in the UK for more than 30 years since I was little (I can't really even speak in my mother tongue). Finding out oldest friends voted Leave and constant uncertainty from Government has left me feeling like I'm walking through treacle for the last couple of years (very British saying!)

endofthelinefinally · 07/08/2019 13:02

I think it has brought the absolute worst out in people generally.
The level of racism, selfishness and sheer ignorance is depressing.
My mental health is poor at the moment anyway, but Brexit definitely hasn't helped.
My DC have dual nationality and both have opted to leave the UK.
Their reasons are multi factorial, but Brexit is definitely a factor. I miss them and I am aware that travelling is going to get more difficult and expensive.

crankysaurus · 07/08/2019 13:05

Yes, I have an increasing level of anxiety over the security of my job, which as the main earner in the family isn't great. I know others who have much greater concerns over their futures.

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/08/2019 13:06

Yes, extremely worried about medication shortages, impact on the businesses DH and I work in, the future for our DCs, it is going to affect every aspect of our lives and I can't think of a single positive thing about it.

ssd · 07/08/2019 13:06

Yes, I worry so much for my sons futures here. I didn't worry before brexit.

ssd · 07/08/2019 13:07

I hope David fucking Cameron is reading this thread, from his mansion.

JellyfishAndShells · 07/08/2019 13:12

No - its a worry in many ways, but it doesn't overwhelm everything else in my life and I have a sense of proportion. I avoid catastrophising opinion pieces and echo chambers whilst trying to filter out any nuggets of actual fact. Experience of other major upheavals over the years helps to stop the headless chicken effect.

megletthesecond · 07/08/2019 13:16

Yes. I feel very vulnerable as a LP.

I'd like to be proved wrong but the past three years haven't filled me with confidence.

Quellium · 07/08/2019 13:17

Yes. I worry for my children's futures, especially as the climate crisis is being ignored in favour of the absolute waste of time and money that is Brexiting.

I worry about the effects of No Deal.

I worry about what those who are waiting in orgasmic expectation of Brexit day will do when it's not the sunlit uplands they expect it to be.

I worry for the people who are about to call me a snowflake for worrying.

I worry for the EU27 citizens and people of Ireland / N. Ireland / Gibraltar etc.

I worry that the NHS is about to be sold off to America (of course it is) and our rights and freedoms decimated. It is what Brexit is all about. I know it's hard to admit you've been conned.

Nothing good about Brexit. Even if, by some miracle, it is vaguely OK, we've still lost FoM, let the racists and xenophobes out from under their rocks and we have a division that I don't expect to see healed before I die.

We've wasted time and money on this that should be spent solving much more pressing concerns and will continue to do so for decades. It's shameful.

But yeah. Call me a snowflake.

boatyardblues · 07/08/2019 13:21

The most depressing thing has been the revelation that our parliament couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery

thisnamechanger · 07/08/2019 13:23

Tbh I'm probably one of the only people that it's helped my MH!!

Don't get me wrong I find it all very sad and depressing but having started my career in the last recession I had it drilled into me to be grateful for whatever job you can get and stick to it or you won't have a career. Seeing it all about to happen all over again I've finally looked my anxiety in the face and gone "fuck it". I have some savings. I'm going travelling with DP til this blows over. I'll work in a cafe when I get back or something.

Abd yes I do realise I'm huge privileged to be able to do that, just throwing my 2 cents in for balance.

Cinammoncake · 07/08/2019 13:24

Experience of other major upheavals over the years helps to stop the headless chicken effect.

What sort of other things would you say were comparable, out of interest?

DMCWelshcakes · 07/08/2019 13:35

Yes.

Massively.

That is all.

timeforakinderworld · 07/08/2019 13:40

Yes, yes, yes to all of the above. Driving through France at the moment and feel very sad that we won't be part of the Union with our closest neighbours anymore. And I know Leavers say "but we'll still be part of Europe even if we leave the EU ", I thought that 3 years ago but I fear we have trashed our reputation forever. We have thrown away so much to gain so little.

Herocomplex · 07/08/2019 13:40

I’m a really positive person I think. Brexit makes me want to scream and cry.
My biggest terror is the blind bloody stupidity and denial of facts. Nothing new to be said though. It’s relentless crap.
