Do you think Brexit has affected your mental health?

Was discussing in the car with my partner yesterday about how I feel like Brexit is a constant low level source of anxiety and depression for me. The uncertainty, the lack of clear positives, it just feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel and I have no control over it.
Just wondered if other people felt the same way? That it's actually having a negative effect on their mental health?

real concern and worry for our close /friends/colleagues/family ie you lovely lot x

Thank you @CilantroChili, that’s brought tears to my eyes.

We love you too Flowers.

It improved my mental health slightly if I am 100% honest. I unfriended and flounced from a couple of social media groups because I was sick of people being shouted down and belittled and patronised by remainers.

I did vote for remaining. But others voted differently and were as entitled to express their views and thoughts as the remainers. I didn't like the way 75% of the group, which was an ante natal group, ganged up on 5% of the group. So flounced.

Made my mental health a lot better as I stopped comparing myself to other mums and my baby to other babies.

TSSDNCOP · 08/08/2019 14:21

No. I am a remainder and very pro-European.

sennac · 08/08/2019 16:40

Not for me. I don't anticipate it affecting me or my family in any major way. And as others have mentioned, it's not anything I can do anything about, so not much point wasting time worrying about it.

ginyogarepeat · 08/08/2019 19:29

Oh to to be able to not care about it and just have a nonchalant attitude towards the whole thing.....only when you're in NI it's lives, actual lives, that are being risked. We have a very fragile peace here and I'm terrified.

Linseedlill · 08/08/2019 20:46

I don't understand how people can say "oh no it won't affect me" when EU legislation touches on so many aspects of our lives (even for those who don't travel abroad): from the medicines we rely on, to the standards of the food we eat, the safety of the toys our children play with, the cleanliness of our beaches, to name but a few. After we leave the EU, we won't be able to take any of this safety and security for granted.

Just recently we have seen the EU stand up to the dominance of global companies such as Google and Facebook to try and protect consumers. Do you really think the UK will have the clout to do this on its own?

Same with trade deals. When negotiating with the USA, China, India, Singapore Japan etc, will the UK with a population of 65 million have the same clout and leverage as the joint 28 countries of the EU of 508 million citizens? No it won't! As Obama said we will be back to the bottom of the queue. And we will have voluntarily imposed these handicaps on ourselves fhs!

dimsum123 · 08/08/2019 20:59

@Linseedlill, my thoughts exactly. The EU has been falsely painted as the bad guy whereas in fact their laws and regulations are all aimed at protecting us from the greedy, exploitative and manipulative actions of the huge global corporations that now seem to control much of the world.

All the laws and regulations granting us the right to compensation for flight delays and cancellations, mis-sold holidays etc come from the EU! Particularly pertinent at the moment.

Once we've left I've no doubt all our consumer, employment rights health and safety protections will be stripped away.

And apparently this is exactly what the majority voted for in the referendum. Hmm

I despair.

It's a known internet phenomenon as those who pretend they are or critical thinking and not easily led by "propaganda" whilst trawling twitter and and turning 180 degrees on any publication that offers a different/balanced argument against "said religion"

It's a situation of not being more educated, left leaning, more aware or whatever scenario you like to profess, it horse shoe theory with regards to Maga defense force in america, you are part of a culture war and think you are some kind of trail blazer, if it is effecting your mental health you don't have the intelligence nor critical thinking you most likely think you do. If you have some MH issue step away from any online political debate and clickbait headlines from the mail/independant/guardian etc and step away from twatter.

vdbfamily · 08/08/2019 21:18

we are currently in Germany on holiday and everyone wants to talk about Brexit. Nobody seems to be mocking the UK and most seem to understand the reasons even if they disagree that Brexit is best option. We spent some time with friends who are aScottish/ German couple. They voted remain but have been so disgusted by how the EU and German press have since been behaving they are now very pro Brexit. My German friend grew up in East Germany and she says that she feels Europe is starting to feel a little similar where there is an accepted political view that is shouted about and anyone who thinks differently is afraid to say so out loud for fear of abuse. He described how at parties, when he voices that he has moved from remain to Brexit, there is a sense of relief that someone has raised the subject and is happy to discuss both sides as it is so rare to be able to discuss Brexit without being accused of being ignorant. To answer the original OP I genuinely have not had any anxieties about whatever will happen. there are far far worse places to be living where you would daily be in great of your life so I am thankful for living in a democracy and whatever happens, it is unlikely too be as catastrophic as people seem to think.

dimsum123 · 08/08/2019 21:21

I'm truly amazed that a remainer now wants brexit! Has he had a blow to the head?

Miljah · 08/08/2019 22:03

vdbfamily it's quite likely that the EU needs a bit of a slap. One that the UK, so well placed could have engineered.

But I am gobsmacked that it's the British people who have decided to 'take the hit' in order to make the EU reform- as it will.

Generally, 'we're' leaders in this, not sacrificial lambs.

Except now.

Cobblersandhogwash · 08/08/2019 22:36

The EU needs a bit of a slap? Why?

That's hardly the way to approach things.

Cobblersandhogwash · 08/08/2019 22:39

@vdbfamily really?

It's not about having a difference of opinion.

It's about the difference between talking shite and not talking shite.

I find Leavers don't like it when their fantasy shite is highlighted and trashed.

They call it a shutting down of freedom of speech. 😂 I call it shutting down of codswallop.

AnnaFiveTowns · 08/08/2019 22:59

Brexit, Trump, Farage, Johnson, the rise of the right, climate change are all things that are causing me a lot of anxiety at the moment. I am so worried about the state of the world; had I been able to foresee all of this then I would not have had children.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 08/08/2019 23:04

Nope, I hate politic with a passion and all of our government are a bunch of assholes who have absolutley no idea. All they care about is getting one over on each other. Even though brexit was effectively David Cameron’s fault and then he fucked off and left everyone else to clean up, all primeministers before him haven’t been much better. They all sit and debate with no clear results, take however much money off us and we are yet to see results, they just invent things like sugar tax to get more money out of us. Why some of us struggling to make it from one day to the next and they sit in thier lovely modern houses and apartments planning exclusive holidays and where to buy thier next holiday home. I’ve literally given up caring and don’t let it affect my mindset, it is what it is and we can’t do fuck all about it. I5s hard to vote for a party when they are all run by knob jockeys 😊

longestlurkerever · 08/08/2019 23:10

Yes. I mentioned this to colleagues yesterday. It's hard to separate from despair over the world in general but Brexit was the start of it. I'm just in a general funk. I can't get excited about anything. I'm also anxious and regularly sleep poorly.

vdbfamily · 09/08/2019 07:45

Miljah, agreed....an extreme way to force reform.

R44Me · 09/08/2019 07:50

No hasn't bothered me but tales of baby porn use, people trafficking, refugees drowning in the Med, stabbings amongst young men all do.
