Southern Brittany - things to do in the rain!

We're going to southern Brittany next week and it's looking like there's going to be a ton of rain...

Would love some suggestions of things to do and places to go on rainy days if anyone has good insider knowledge!

No suggestions, but I feel your pain - we are going to Normandy with the same forecast. We will be stuck inside a big house with all dh’s extended family 😱

LittleAndOften · 06/08/2019 23:25

We were stuck in rainy Brittany June 2018 with my parents in the middle of nowhere. Honestly, there's not much to do indoors. the Hypermarche was our saviour!

snowballer · 06/08/2019 23:27

Oh god - dreading it already now!!

Find a local indoor pool (with correct swim attire). We did. Also any local markets?
We did bbq in the rain and also explored rock pools on the beach, etc.

snowballer · 06/08/2019 23:29

We'll have the car so could make the trip to Brest and the aquarium. That'll take a day up I guess. Why did I not make my case harder to go further south...!

St Marurice Creperie and the woodland walk
Concarneau - theres a museum there although never been. Can also check out the town especially the old part with the fort
Pont Avon is another lovely town
Quimper and Qiumperle are ok
It's France so there must be a nice chateau to look around somewhere
Hope you have some nicer days and the crossing isn't too bad due to the weather conditions

YY to finding out where and when the local markets are

TheRLodger · 06/08/2019 23:39

Dm said sarzeau is rather nice as well

Chickoletta · 06/08/2019 23:41

Go to Vannes - there's a fantastic aquarium and butterfly garden next door to each other in a new marina type complex which also has some nice shops and restaurants. We often holiday in Carnatec and go there every year.

Chickoletta · 06/08/2019 23:49

I mean we stay in Carnac

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/08/2019 23:50

Is nantes far from you? I go there from Southern Brittany.
Or the food market in Rennes

ProfessorofPerspective · 06/08/2019 23:54

We went to the Escape Room at Pontivy last week, great fun. If your children are over about 10.

42isthemeaning · 07/08/2019 00:01

I second going to Vannes and if there's a let up in the rain, head to Quiberon or La Trinité sur Mer and enjoy some seafood or Breizh crêpes / galettes.

Mentounasc · 07/08/2019 00:25

If you can get to Nantes, both the Machine des Iles and the Castel des Duc de Bretagne (sp?) are reasonably undercover and good fun for a family. There's bound to be an indoor swimming pool too.

ineedaholidaynow · 07/08/2019 00:36

I assume there will be some festivals next week as there were in Brittany when we went at a similar time in August a few years ago. I am sure we went to one in Pont Avon.

15th August is a public holiday in France, so some things may be shut on that day, if you are there on that day.

snowballer · 07/08/2019 10:06

Some great suggestions thanks- I think we're too far from Nantes really - a couple of hours. We're going to be not far from Pont-Aven. Kids are 5 and 8 if that makes any difference!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/08/2019 10:22

Once you're there you will see leaflets for close by attractions.

Nantes is a fair drive but worth it.

Chateaubriant castle sometimes has reenactors with weapons children can hold

ineedaholidaynow · 07/08/2019 11:30

Pont Avon is lovely

BlamesFartsOnTheNeighbour · 07/08/2019 11:36

We're in Vannes at the moment, the weather is very changeable so don't despair. At worst get your rain gear on and get on a boat out to the islands anyway! Otherwise we're planning soft play and a treetop adventure (accrobranche).

snowballer · 07/08/2019 13:15

Treetop adventuring is a great idea thank you! And I've found a farm park thing near Pont Aven too that looks quite fun called L'Aven Parc - we'll try that too

We enjoyed Pontivy, and Concarneau for rainy days. Hennebont is also quite good. We did go to Vannes once when it was rainy, and the queue for the aquarium was round the block.

The Base Sous Marin at Lorient is worth a trip too.

TonTonMacoute · 07/08/2019 14:40

There are quite a few maize mazes around as well.

SweetLathyrus · 07/08/2019 16:00

The submarine base at Lorient was a hit when my DS was about 8.

Although Nantes might be a bit of a trek, this places - Machines de L'iles might make it worth it, they are fabulous Jules Verne inspired creatures. I went before the carousel was finished and the elephant is still one of my favourite things in the world!

Pack your waterproofs, and try out the Village de l'An Mil in Melrand.

Pontivy has some nice quirky shops.

Saint Goustan is a pretty port near to Auray Cathedral, but is quite steep walking for the littlest one.

The other thing is that the weather is S. Brittany is quite variable, my parents live there and it often rains in the next village over while they are in baking sun!

Have fun.

Although Nantes might be a bit of a trek, this places - <a class="break-all" href="http://go.mumsnet.com/?xs=1&id=470X1554755&url=www.lesmachines-nantes.fr/en/" target="_blank">Machines de L'iless* might make it worth it, they are fabulous Jules Verne inspired creatures.

Wow - just looked at this and it looks incredible! Wonder if I can persuade husband it's a good idea to drive 200km to see it! Thank you for your other suggestions too, this thread has been brilliant

Museum of the Sea at Dournanez is amazing and a decent creperie next door.

Notwiththeseknees · 07/08/2019 20:46

Posted too soon. Allow a full day as the outside boats are great to explore.
