I enjoyed Barcelona as it was by the sea, perhaps there’s some other nice seaside city’s we could visit
Ideally with a nice sandy beach

But in the whole I just don’t get what people enjoy about them

Dh been mentioning about going or Venice or Milan and I’m not sure I fancy it much

We only ever really do city breaks, they’re my favourite kind of holiday. I love exploring and soaking up the local culture.

timeforakinderworld · 06/08/2019 17:17

The architecture, the food, the people watching, the museums, the history...

timeforakinderworld · 06/08/2019 17:18

Venice has a beach - maybe you could combine both?

WarmSausageTea · 06/08/2019 17:20

It really depends on the city. I like to see different buildings, try different restaurants, take in some culture and pretty much live like a local. So I’ve really enjoyed Riga, Strasbourg, Boston and Skopje, among others, because they’ve got bags of character and lots to explore, whereas I found Frankfurt and Vancouver to be quite bland.

bebeboeuf · 06/08/2019 17:22

I love a city break as they are usually child free and I can pretend I’m a cool hip fun loving free spirit for a few nights.

I love just exploring and sitting in cafes and finding the best of the local food

limesoda · 06/08/2019 17:25

Food, mostly. Walking to see some sight, stopping for coffees or beers or whatever on the way. Checking out markets. Finding local tap rooms.

Lisbon might work for you, with a coastline close by and on a train, or Malaga (we went to the latter in January, so no idea what the beach life is actually like).

But horses for courses and if you prefer a beach, no point spending all that hard earned money on something where you are forcing yourself to have fun.

Ponoka7 · 06/08/2019 17:28

I like architecture and social history.

You don't get the same atmosphere of a place on a beach.

I like the choice of, bars, restaurants and live music etc.

You get more of a feel about how the people actually live. You get a real feel of a place by going on their public transport.

I used to go camping on the coast nearly every week, so i got a good mix, though.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/08/2019 17:29

I like exploring shops, cafes, restaurants, parks, waterways, famous landmarks, museums. Beaches would only be a bit of an afterthought for me, I wouldn't normally pack beach stuff for a city break, so maybe just a walk along the beach in the evening.

Ponoka7 · 06/08/2019 17:29

Lisbon and Malta are on my visit list.

HermioneWeasley · 06/08/2019 17:30

I like seeing sites of historical interest - buildings, museums, galleries etc. I enjoy seeing different architecture. I enjoy finding good places to eat. I enjoy exploring different shops.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 06/08/2019 17:31

I love a good city break! I like eating in good restaurants, visiting museums and interesting local attractions, going to the theatre or a concert (depending on where you are), doing a bit of shopping, and generally wandering around and people watching.

If you don't fancy it though, there's nothing wrong with that. Different strokes and all that.

Comefromaway · 06/08/2019 17:31

Theatres, shops and restaurants.

SinkGirl · 06/08/2019 17:31

I can’t imagine what people like about beach holidays, I find them so dull! We are all different.

For me city breaks are about two things - sight seeing and food. Mainly food. Hunting out the best restaurants and eating in as many of them as possible is the main purpose of any city break for me!

Venice is absolutely stunning, I don’t know how anyone could not enjoy a few days there.

breaconoptimist · 06/08/2019 17:34

If you don’t much like history, architecture, art or spending £££ on food, or have a particular dislike of crowds etc I can see why they’re not for you. They’re for me - so convenient. My least favourite holiday is a beach holiday, can’t stand sand and don’t like the sea especially plus mosquito ridden.

History, food, culture, food, beautiful buildings, food, wine/beer, food, strolling by a river, food, shopping in a bustling market, food, discovering the local festivals, ... did I mention the food?

BikeRunSki · 06/08/2019 17:36

Lots to explore and see in fairly close proximity. Big/capital cities give a good flavour of the history, culture, cuisine of their country. Plentiful entertainment.

I live in the countryside, it’s nice to be able to go out for a meal without transport logistics! I like dipping into city culture for a few days.

Nice has a beach, and easy access to the Cote D’Azure and Monaco. That was a good trip. We went to Italy for lunch!

Aragog · 06/08/2019 17:46

Exploring the sights
Walking around, strolling
Photographing what I see
The food and drink (even with a child, and now older teen)
Sitting and watching the world go by

But then I can't really see the appeal of a beach holiday. Certainly not a sitting on a beach or by a pool for hours at a time, and just sunbathing. I don't mind it for a little while but need to be out and about more. We often do mix it up a bit - city followed by a few days at a coastal resort, or focus mainly on city.

Malaga and Valencia are both nice cities with beaches closely, walking distance.

bee222 · 06/08/2019 18:18

Art, Culture, famous sights, shopping, cafes, restaurants, discovering hidden gems on foot, museums, long walks, parks, historical places, old buildings, theatre, bars, walks at night time, hopping onto a train to visiting the next town along etc.

I would get bored within a couple of hours on a beach holiday.

NoHummus · 06/08/2019 18:27

I like cafes, architecture, street art, independent shops and people watching. Now that my backpacking days are behind me, on city breaks I book the nicest hotel I can afford, with a pool if possible. I don't like being out and about all day every day so I spend plenty of time just relaxing at the hotel. I love beach holidays too, but only if the beach is on a Scottish island!

TowerRingInferno · 06/08/2019 18:29

Museums and learning things
Choice of restaurants and types of food
People watching
Interesting buildings, churches, street names

We live rurally so don’t get to do these things normally

username302020 · 06/08/2019 18:32

I like visiting museums, walking, taking pictures. I also enjoy the food and the "famous" places to visit.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 06/08/2019 18:35

Rhodes?

museumum · 06/08/2019 18:41

Restaurants and food, bars with outdoor seating to watch the world go by, museums, art, architecture. Strolling about, seeing how people live in another country.
I’ve been to Barcelona and Venice and it never occurred to me to sit on the beach at either. I like a walk in a wild beach but don’t like sitting on them much.

Missillusioned · 06/08/2019 18:51

Seems most people mention restaurants and food. Bit of a lightbulb moment for me.

I'm not that keen on City breaks and it's just dawned on me that it might in part be because im not especially interested in food. It's just fuel to me and I dislike restaurants because I just want to get the fuel onboard and go with minimum time spent.

I also dislike crowds, although I like art.

bebeboeuf · 06/08/2019 19:21

I hate crowds too but go out of season or to quieter cities.
Never had any problem in Copenhagen which is definitely my all time favourite and even if you’re not a big foodie, the cinnamon danishes with a coffee are delicious
