I enjoyed Barcelona as it was by the sea, perhaps there’s some other nice seaside city’s we could visit
Ideally with a nice sandy beach

But in the whole I just don’t get what people enjoy about them

Dh been mentioning about going or Venice or Milan and I’m not sure I fancy it much

I enjoy visiting museums and galleries and generally seeing the sights. I like eating and drinking the local food, wine & beer with the locals. I love food shopping in foreign markets and supermarkets. I like going on holiday to places which are not full of British tourists.

Food, history, culture, shopping. I love city breaks, even as a city dweller. A cottage in the country or beach holiday would have me climbing the walls in no time and counting the minutes till I could get away. Give me the bright lights any day!

Couldn’t tell you much about Venice or Milan but I am sure there are plenty of places which you could both enjoy visiting.

I love a city break. You can soak up a culture so quickly. And eat amazing food....
I also love being near the sea. I find it totally relaxing. I could wave watch longer than I could people watch! I wouldn’t want to spend day after day on the beach though.

San Sebastian and Valencia combine sea, food and sights. They’re both great city destinations.

My idea of a horror holiday is lying on a beach. I hate hot sun and I would just get so bored. I spend my working life sitting so when I'm on holiday I want to be out and about and doing things. If I want to sit on my ass and read a book I'll do that in my own home or garden for free!

That's not to say I'm running round like a mad thing. There are plenty of stops for coffee, or ice cream, or a glass of wine and some people watching. But I like to see things. I tend to do a mix of museums, sight seeing, shopping and something nature related. My DC are exactly the same as me. Whether that's because that's what we've always done, or whether they'd be like that regardless, I don't know.

However, I'm going to be very honest! I had an ex who lived in Sardinia, we'd take it in turns to visit each other. When I went to see him we'd spend the morning having sex, then go for lunch, then nap and more sex, then evening drinks and dinner and more sex! Tbh I really enjoyed that Grin So I think my need to "do stuff" on my holidays without a partner is based on the fact I need some excitement if I'm not having sex! Blush

The culture and museums largely.
I also like being able to travel everywhere either on foot or by public transport.

Lardlizard · 07/08/2019 08:37

Thanks for the ideas of places that are also cities by the sea

I guess I’m not that interested in museums or churches
But I do enjoy good food and drink and a bit of shopping

If you're not interested in art, history, architecture and culture, city breaks would be a bit pointless imo. Unless you're really willing to travel just to go shopping in a different country.

If you enjoyed Barcelona you might like Valencia. I've never been but have heard good things about it.

Helsinki has plenty of non-city things to do, islands to explore etc. Copenhagen is amazing, I am sure you would enjoy that even if you are not really into city breaks. Ditto Berlin, you can get out of the city and explore the countryside. The main issue with city breaks these days is the number of people - it's just stupid how busy everywhere is. So it's a good thing to look for cities that are less on the radar, eg Utrecht or Groningen in the Netherlands, Hamburg rather than Berlin, I was in Liverpool last week and that was full of German tourists off a cruise ship though I can recommend it as a UK city break.

probstimeforanewname · 07/08/2019 10:14

I'm not into churches or architecture either so there needs to be some sort of city scape. For example the waterfront at Liverpool or the Alster area in Hamburg. But generally I just like walking around, enjoying the atmosphere and having nice food (and wine).

AuntieMarys · 07/08/2019 10:15

Ooh I love a city break!
Art, museums, history, culture and food. Not a beach person at all.

Lardlizard · 07/08/2019 10:22

Ummm didn’t really say I wasn’t interested in art, history, architecture and culture!!

And then a lot of European city’s it’s a lot of the the same shops like h and m and Zara etc

I am not a beach person (not keen on sand, having done many years of beach holidays with young DC) but I still like a city break.

I am not enormously interested in churches or museums, but I would definitely have a mosey round. I like gardens very much. And parks. I like having a wander, stopping for something to drink, another wander, stopping for something to eat etc.

My ideal would be a few days of doing this, and then a few days by a pool, under an umbrella with a stack of books and magazines and a
diet coke every once in a while. And then an ice cream.

The Greek islands are good for this, as are the Balearics, ditto Nice or Cannes, Sicily too.

Aragog · 07/08/2019 12:54

We never go in churches, and only the odd museum. Not overly interested in art galleries but have mooches round the odd more well known ones. I wouldn't say we were overly bothered about architecture either tbh, and we don't go shopping.

However, we love to wander around and we love to people watch. We can sit and enjoy a leisurely coffee outside, enjoying the warmth chatting for ages.
