Recommend me some random foods from the supermarket that I might not have come across please!

Staycation. Doing a Tesco order. Getting in the stuff we only normally buy on holiday (whole salami, convenience food I secretly love, that sort of thing).

Want to make it feel like when you go into a supermarket on holiday and find random snacks and stuff you haven't tried before. What off the beaten track goodies might I not have unearthed in Tesco before?

(I know Lidl would be a better bet but it has to be online today).

the tesco chocolate and caramel spread and the duo chocolate spreads are really nice :)

Allthebubbles · 06/08/2019 12:42

If they do a greek range, tinned giant beans in tomato sauce are good and also stuffed vine leaves. Also things like baba ghanoush, which is aubergine dip.

What about baklava as well?
Also maybe just try some cheeses you wouldn't normally get.

OrangeJustice · 06/08/2019 12:43

Albi Max (or similar spelling) chocolate bars from the Eastern European section. Bit like a Lion bar but bigger, better and cheaper.

ALittleBitAlexis · 06/08/2019 12:44

Epoisses - gorgeous cheese for baking, much nicer than camembert.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/08/2019 12:45

Caperberries
Kimchi
Stuffed vine leaves
Polish sweet cheese pastries
Smoked almonds
Portuguese custard tarts
Marinated anchovies

Kombucha, keffir, lassi, nduja salami, fresh figs, frozen pizza dough, goyoza, macaroni cheese bites.......

Think of your favourite 3 restaurants and what you would eat there ... Then order the ingredients to make the dishes. Or think of your dream holiday destination and the food from the region (Google it if necessary) and search Tesco for it.

Enjoy your staycation.

IHeartKingThistle · 06/08/2019 12:50

Love this!

Ooh yes, keffir, we love the morello cherry one.
Fancy still lemonade
Graze bags
Tagine paste
Tesco red velvet cookies are amazing.

JingsMahBucket · 06/08/2019 12:58

This is such a great idea! I’d get fruit you normally wouldn’t buy unless on vacation for both exoticness and convenience. For example, if you’re usually an apple banana family, buy the passion fruits, kiwi, mango, etc, especially if they’re already cut up for you. Make a picnic!

BarbaraofSeville · 06/08/2019 13:02

Do they have any 'dine in for a tenner' or curry feast type meal deals?

Plus lots of nice crusty bread, olives, crisps and cheese to go with the salami.

No chance you can get out to an M&S Simply Food? That's what I do when I want treaty food at home.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 06/08/2019 13:09

Kabanos - perfect little snacking sausage to go with beer

Pataks Garlic Pickle - Not very hot, slightly sweet and perfect with ham in a sandwich

Śledź - Pickled herring in a creamy sauce

Ogórki Kiszone - Soured cucumbers. Not vinegary like English ones and really good on their own or as a side to a meal

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 06/08/2019 13:13

If they are doing dine for a tenner and they have the peppered steaks they are seriously good!

Hmmm. Nice olives and cheeses. Houmous. Unusual bread or crackers and posh chutney.

Nice chocolate bars too.

Fancy cookies.

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/08/2019 14:15

If you usually buy 'spreads' then buy proper butter instead (makes all the difference on good bread).
If you buy Elmlea or any of those other abominations, then buy some real cream. In fact, buy some clotted cream, fruit scones and really good jam and have a proper Devonshire Cream Tea (unless you live in Devon, in which case it's not really holiday food, it's just food).

sawyersfishbiscuits · 06/08/2019 16:24

Tesco finest bread with nuts and dates in.., yum!

Tintern cheddar or Y Fenni if you can get it.

Some nice tapas bits from the deli counter.
Also Peppadew peppers stuffed with cheese - mmm

In the seasonings aisle they have Street kitchen meal kits with sachets to add to meat and veg

Really good quality chocolate and hot chocolate

sawyersfishbiscuits · 06/08/2019 16:26

Shame it's not M&S as I'm addicted to their tapas bits 3 for £7 with good bread, salad and wine is my Friday night treat!

TremblingFanjo · 06/08/2019 16:37

Jutrzenka jezyki classic biscuits - they are like teeny round toffee crisps.

Cofresh chilli and lemon flavour potato grills - spicy crisps, almost the wrong shape for dipping but brilliant with cool yoghurt dips.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 06/08/2019 16:38

Lotus biscuit paste!

user1471449040 · 06/08/2019 16:54

White corn tortillas in the gluten free aisle make amazing authentic hot Mexican wraps and bakes!

LifeIsGoodish · 06/08/2019 16:54

Aivar. It's a cooked peppers puree. Absolutely heavenly as a sandwich spread or a dip. Gorgeous as a relish on fish. There's a hot pepper one and a sweet pepper one. I prefer the 'sweet' pepper one, though it's definitely savoury.

Sauerkraut. Especially any Polish make. Try it with a hot meat dish such as a stew or Shepherd's Pie. Or in a hotdog innabun.

Peppadews. Again, I prefer the sweet or mild versions, but then I'm not a chilli fan.

LifeIsGoodish · 06/08/2019 16:56

Chollah bread. It tears into really nice, handy chunks. If you happen to have any left over, slice it and make the best bread pudding or French toast.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/08/2019 16:57

I love sauerkraut.
Our Tesco used to sell the blue tortilla chips but stopped.
Tapenade is great, I eat it with a spoon!
Im now realising why my shopping always costs so muchGrin

MmmBlowholes · 06/08/2019 17:02

I'd be having some bavarian smoked cheese.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 06/08/2019 17:08

The beetroot with juniper and black pepper is great.

IHeartKingThistle · 06/08/2019 17:53

OK several of these things ordered but now I want the rest - next week's shop I think!

Food is totally my thing, I love trying new things and I love cooking.
I made paella tonight and I'm not even thinking about the cost, but too much probably.
I can't function without at least 5 types of cheese in the fridge, and that's the bare minimum, I really need to cut down.
