Blatant drug dealing

Masketti · 06/08/2019 09:13

I live in a place voted one of the nicest places to live in recentish years. I went on a UK holiday somewhere voted nice for families to go to.

In the last 2 months I have seen 3 drug deals literally in front of me, 2 in my town whilst holding my kids' hands walking down the street and 1 in the holiday location literally outside my front door.

I'm not looking for it. I've never been into drugs. It must be completely blatant for me to notice it. I have never seen a deal happening before (to my knowledge hence why this is so obvious).

What is going on? Do drug dealers have no shame any more? Is it so widespread it happens everywhere? 2 in my home town in broad daylight on normal streets.

My children of course didn't have a clue what was going on thankfully but this disregard for families around them is not OK. Drugs harm people and I'm utterly surprised at how blatant the dealing is.

I grew up in a gorgeous market town in North Yorkshire, it’s also near the top of a list of the best places to live in the UK!

It also had a huge drug problem..... I was aware of it a a teen. Not heavy stuff but recreational type of drugs.

Unless you lived there though you probably wouldn’t have noticed as it’s beautiful to look at - and be in!

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 09:26

I live in a "quiet" nice small town in scotland they drug deal in the park broad daylight I don't know if they think they are being subtle or just so brazen they don't care.!

Bravelurker · 06/08/2019 09:32

The way I see it is although drugs are illegal and dangerous, so is driving to work in the morning after drinking a bottle of wine the night before and almost killing a cyclist /pedestrian /child with carelessness. This is also very common.
Basically, no reason why this would only happen in so called not nice areas.

NoBaggyPants · 06/08/2019 09:33

We've got 20,000 less front line police officers than ten years ago.

People (especially young people) have no job security and many struggle to keep their heads above water in traditional/ legal employment.

Drug dealing brings (comparitively) high rewards and little risk of getting caught. Is it any wonder this is happening?

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 09:37

I think the Op is shocked at the blatant dealing in full view of everybody they don't give a shit they swap money and packets like they are running a corner shop !

RushianDisney · 06/08/2019 09:38

I used to live in a town often cited as being very 'naice', massive massive drug problems. Took months and hundreds of complaints from residents before the police raided the crack/heroin den in the flats at the end of our road. There were so many used needles scattered all over our back lane people stopped using it for fear of stepping on one. If it's weed dealing they care even less, it's seen as a low risk way to top up benefits.

NoBaggyPants · 06/08/2019 09:39

I think the Op is shocked at the blatant dealing in full view of everybody

Which is what happens when there are no police around.

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 09:43

The police do come where i live they are regularly called by either residents or business owners and they just shut shop and move on!

Roomba · 06/08/2019 09:49

My parents live in a very 'naice' area which i mostly populated by retired wealthy folk or wealthy families with small children. I've spotted a lot of blatant drug dealing going on when I've visited recently. My mother was shocked when I pointed it out to her as she hadn't noticed, but now she spots things going on too. Well off young fathers who work in the tech industry, buying coke whilst taking their oblivious toddlers to the park. Their trusty roofer turned out to be a heroin addict (did a grand job on the roof, mind). It's everywhere if you look.

But then they only have one or police officers covering that area most of the time, so not that surprising.

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 09:53

Woman in our spar told me to not use the ATM because it is used to snort drugs Shock apparently they are seen on cctv hoods up obviously but still.

HJWT2 · 06/08/2019 10:05

You do realise most people who sniff cocaine are in high paying jobs or 'good' people so Teachers, Nurses, Police officers etc etc! You will get more drug deals in nice areas being seen in the day than you will on a rough estate because on a 'rough' estate they all do it together in there homes!

Masketti · 06/08/2019 10:05

Yes it's the blatantness! I know it goes on. Drugs have been around as long as civilisation. I'm surprised how little care they have about being seen. And how little regard they have to children seeing them.

Just mentioned it to DH who says pretty much every night he was woken up by chat outside the house (hot nights) and he's only just put 2 and 2 together.

It's blatant in my not very naice at all town too. Same places every day and the police do nothing about it except sending out the odd community support officer to disperse if the crowds get too big.

Weed is smoked like cigarettes. It's apparently acceptable to be stoned all day now.

We used to be on a route to the local college and virtually every group of kids walking past was accompanied by a cloud of weed. At lunch time the gather and do bongs in the park. Some of these kids are going there to learn how to operate dangerous machinery, others are driving.
College do nothing, the police do nothing.

Bravelurker · 06/08/2019 11:00

But I think as well as the blatantness you mention, I also sense a general feeling of snobbery about drug usage, which is slightly naive . I do get it though.
I grew up in a rough area, where drug use was rife but I worked in a nice area around nice people and found that drug use was not the done thing. So I came away with the idea that drug users were 'low end' types.
This idea was debunked aged 21, when I moved to London to a very nice area, where lots of rich celebrities lived and took tons of drugs.
Sorry, I just needed to put that there Blush.

SquirmOfEels · 06/08/2019 11:05

I think it has become more blatant - I'm a city dweller and have noticed this too, also people seem to smoke cannabis more publicly than before (earlier in the day, places with more people around). It's no longer rare.

County Lines presumably see ire it way rom cities.

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 11:07

I am not navie or a snob, I just don't understand why or when drug taking was accepted as norm people get more annoyed at people fag smoking that drug taking when did we start shrugging shoulders and saying well what can you do?

ssd · 06/08/2019 11:10

I must walk about with my eyes shut. I've never seen a drug deal in my life.

PrincessScarlett · 06/08/2019 11:11

Definitely more blatant due to massive cutbacks in the police budget. Happens all the time in my little town, most people are aware of it but police never do anything about it. I don't like that it has become "normal" and fear that my kids will grow up thinking it's part of normal life.

RedTideBlues · 06/08/2019 12:57

People using and dealing drugs do not feel shame. Its more about money, getting high or desperation.

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 13:11

It is so sad that people are so selfish that they would deal drugs in/near a park kids running about could knock into them and these kids could be hurt, people walking past are also at risk if the dealers feel threatened they could turn deal your bloody drugs elsewhere it infuriates me .

Bravelurker · 06/08/2019 13:24

Apologies, that last comment did sound a bit goady and patronising. I'm just so amune to it, but that in its self is so wrong.

LyndaLaHughes · 06/08/2019 13:29

Because the police don't have the resources to deal with it anymore so it's done more blatantly. People don't fear the consequences as it's highly unlikely they will be caught and little is done if they are. Welcome to Tory Britain where austerity has destroyed the country on so many levels and the same people complaining about the rise of gangs and crime are those who see no link between their own recreational drug use and the mess we are in.

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2019 13:32

Bravelurker You didn't say anything goady.

RosaWaiting · 06/08/2019 14:31

It’s the same where I live. It’s not nice here though so for a while I thought it was limited to rough areas but apparently not.

AquaPris · 06/08/2019 18:55

Sounds about right. Drug dealers don't care - most people won't report them out of fear/ none of my business.

I don't know a single person who hasn't smoked weed, I'd say 70% of people I know have tried coke. Even the adamantly non drugs ones as teenagers. And I'm a respectable professional living in London with successful, high earning friends (for our age).

It's common. That's why the drug industry is worth so much and why there are more stabbings and why there are county lines.

Weed is now acceptable, with people saying it will be legalised. Coke is middle class. Addicts aren't scarce.

Unsure why you'd be surprised tbh. My police friends have been told not to arrest weed smokers in the park as it takes up time away from serious crime.
