I found out I was pregnant this weekend via home resting kit, and I have a doctors appointment tomorrow. What can I expect? Thanks

I went to mines, she said congratulations and booked an appointment with the midwife! And checked I was taking folic acid. It might be best to see if you can just book an appointment directly with the midwife rather than going to the GP, they didnt even do a pregnancy test to confirm I was pregnant or anything.

YesILikeItToo · 05/08/2019 20:58

Nothing whatsoever, in my experience. My doctor wasn’t even able to tell me where I would have the baby. I can’t remember how I got wired in to the system, but it wasn’t through the GP.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/08/2019 20:58

Congrats

Absolutely nothing happens at the appt other than to register you and to show you how to use google (to self refer to a maternity hospital)

Terrifyingly they don’t give you a pregnancy test so they’re basically taking your word that you’ve peed on the stick properly!

The first midwife appt is just as boring and is basically 90 mins of answering questions about your medical history, filling in forms and taking bloods

Mine was about 5 mins, they did blood pressure and weight, advice about folic acid and referred me to MW. It was very quick!
Most areas you don't see a doctor and go straight to MW but its very old fashioned here (small rural practice).
Congratulations

Passthecherrycoke · 05/08/2019 20:59

At mine nothing, you self refer to the hospital for a booking in appointment by filling out a form online and they organise all your care. All the GP did was tell me that

Megan2018 · 05/08/2019 21:00

We have to see GP here, midwives don’t take self referral so it depends on your area

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 05/08/2019 21:00

Oh and congratulations Smile

PixieLumos · 05/08/2019 21:00

I didn’t get a Drs appointment, I was just given a phone number for the local birthing centre and made a booking appointment with the midwife for when I was 8 weeks.
But I know in some areas you do get a Drs ap first. I would imagine not much will happen tomorrow - probably just some advice on healthy eating, what supplements to take etc and then referral for your booking appointment. (A bit of a waste of time tbh).

Huntlybyelection · 05/08/2019 21:03

My doctor:
Said congratulations
Asked when last period was
Prodded my stomach to make sure I wasn t further along than I thought
Gave me the phone number for the midwife so I could sort out an appointment with her.

Midwife:
Before 10 weeks preferable so that you can get in the system for your 12wk scan
Checked blood pressure
Took blood for testing
Checked urine for...stuff I can't recall
Checked various other social stuff (DV questions)

DappledThings · 05/08/2019 21:17

Never had one, self-referred to hospital online

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:20

At work we rather straight to the midwife after a positive test. Unless a woman is on meds that causes issues with the pregnancy or the GP needs to prescribe something, the midwives will deal with it all.

00100001 · 05/08/2019 21:27

Didn't even see a Dr.

Self referred to midwife services online!

Oct18mummy · 05/08/2019 21:28

Nothing they told me to book my own appointment with the hospital I wanted myself which I did online

00100001 · 05/08/2019 21:29

You may as well cancel the appointment, saves time and money all round!

Just ring the surgery and ask the receptionist how to get referred. Or look in surgery website. Or the CCG website.

Then you'll get an appointment to the ante-natal clinic ins week or so...

PotteringAlong · 05/08/2019 21:29

Have you double checked that you need a drs appointment? Nothing will happen. If you can’t self refer they will literally just pass on your details and you’ll be out of the door in 30 seconds.

PotteringAlong · 05/08/2019 21:30

And the midwife will see you between 8-10 weeks for your booking in appt.

RuthW · 05/08/2019 21:32

Norhing. You don't need a doctor's appointment. Ring and ask. You usually book straight in with the midwife at 8 weeks. (I work at a gp surgery).

happytoday73 · 05/08/2019 21:38

Self referred. Saw midwife week before 12 week scan. Given info & follow up for bloods etc... lots of health questions, family birth/child genetic issues and questions I wasn't expecting... DV and 'is the child's father a blood relative?'...Confused 'he's my husband'... Ooooohhhhhh... made sense why asking when thought about it but totally threw me at at time..especially as we had just talked about his foreign surname and my very British maiden mame

00100001 · 06/08/2019 14:45

@essentialessentialS

did you cancel the appt?

(hope so!)

ShirleyPhallus · 06/08/2019 14:59

@00100001

I was asked to come in and register my pregnancy with the doctor AND self refer to the midwife, it’s different in different areas but not necessarily a waste of resources

00100001 · 06/08/2019 15:09

well.... it seems the majority of people don't need to register at the doctors... :/

20viona · 06/08/2019 15:09

Absolutely nothing. They said congrats and referred me to a midwife

AllFourOfThem · 06/08/2019 15:15

In my area you only see the GP (once you are past viability) at 25 weeks and then again in the third trimester if you wish, or if you need medication. Otherwise it’s all under the midwife or consultants.

SinkGirl · 06/08/2019 15:18

Nothing - GP won’t do anything except tell you to book in with the midwives. You don’t need to see a GP unless you are on medication / have a medical condition. They won’t even test you!

Megan2018 · 06/08/2019 15:18

@00100001 you can't do that everywhere. My GP surgery insist on seeing you to get referred to midwife team. I was surprised as most of mumsnet told me I wouldn't need to see the GP - but in this rural area you do!
