Do you ever serve the same thing for dinner two nights on the run?

I'm in Australia so it's afternoon here. Thinking about dinner tonight...can't be bothered. Not much in and too busy to go to shops.

Would it be terrible to serve chilli again? I served it last night with rice....I thought I could defrost some of what I froze last night and make baked potatoes to go with it...and salad...instead of rice which is what we ate last night.

We always have chilli two nights in a row - I make a batch with 500g beef and it easily feeds us for two evenings. Why not?! Chilli is bloody lovely. Enjoy.

speakout · 05/08/2019 06:26

I wouldn't have the exact meal no, I like to make stuffed veg with left over chilli, use peppers or courgettes, or hollow out jacket potatoes- mix the chilli with rice and stuff the veg with a layer of grated cheese on top. Bake in oven and serve with salad.

Yes, midweek dinner can't always be something fab and exciting 😊 Your chilli will seem like a different meal with different sides anyway.

Go for it, sounds great. We sometimes have the same meal 2 nights in a row. It's nice food, no one minds.

notapizzaeater · 05/08/2019 06:34

Go for it, lasagne and stews are better on day 2

HennyPennyHorror · 05/08/2019 06:45

Speakout but that's what I said...not the exact meal. Confused

Thanks everyone anyway....I'm the cook I choose! And as you say it's bloody lovely chilli anyway!

I'm in Australia too - tonight it's shepherd's pie which we had last night. I always make a double sized one, so we can have it twice. Nobody has every complained !

speakout · 05/08/2019 06:48

I would find that a bit of a red meat overload.
Some of my family would be OK with that but I am not a huge fan of meat, I would stick it in the freezer and have someting else.

TwistyTop · 05/08/2019 06:48

I never do this because I feel like it's wrong. I have no idea why. I can think of no reason why it would be wrong. It's just a vague feeling. Perhaps it's time I questioned this...

Enjoy your chilli OP!

For those who say it's "only " a midweek meal, no I don't agree.
Food is a celebration.
My lovely BIL lives in Italy and staying with him is an education.
Using simple, humble ingredients him and his partner are of the view that every meal is a celebration because it is about life and living. Even just a plate of pasta and vegetables deserves care.
Every meal is a celebration.

That’s all well and good, but after a 5.30am start with my 3 year old, a long day at work managing a hectic workload, and a very detailed “conversation” with my child about why we won’t be having chocolate cake for dinner, I don’t feel much like celebrating a lovingly prepared plate of pasta.
Particularly as I’m a LP and slaving over a stove for a meal that will either be rejected, or at best, eaten with a flamboyant air that results in my scraping it off the ceiling ... by which point I have no appetite at all.

Sorry but as far as I’m concerned that approach to food is the luxury of the childless (indeed, it used to be me!), the time rich, or the retired.

JenniR29 · 05/08/2019 07:05

Yes. If there are leftovers we don’t waste them. I’ll batch cook a chilli or curry and have it the next day with different sides to mix it up a bit.

It is when times are tough that we need to find te time to celebrate.
I am a carer for my elderly disabled mother- who lives with me, also a carer for my 21 year old son who has MH problems and unable to work. I work 40 hours a week running my business from home. I am not without burdens.

I still manage to find time for joy in food- even a plate of pasta.

EskewedBeef · 05/08/2019 07:12

Yes I often give the same dish two nights running, served in a different way as you're doing. Nice as it would be to have a celebration of life every night, in real life I've got to take short cuts to consistently provide nutritious fuel.

Mac47 · 05/08/2019 07:18

Bloody hell. Who celebrates Monday night dinner??
Op - whatever you can rustle up and whatever dc will eat. I have been known to do the exact meal two nights in a row with no variation at all, but as there's only 2 of us, lots of things are in too large quantities for one night only.

Jojoanna · 05/08/2019 07:21

We often have the same meal with different sides two nights running

speakout · 05/08/2019 07:23

I celebrate Monday night dinner. And Monday lunch. In fact I even celebrate a cup of tea. Finding joy enriches my life.

ysmaem · 05/08/2019 07:24

We've had leftover from the night before plenty of times. It's not the same meal with different sides anyhow. Enjoy your chilli

TheSheepofWallSt · 05/08/2019 07:26

@speakout

You’re a better woman than me!
Joy these days, is a timely Deliveroo that arrives with all the condiments I’ve requested

sandgrown · 05/08/2019 07:28

My DP always finds imaginative ways to use leftovers do we often have the same thing , in a different guise, two nights in a row. He thinks I an mad because I make sure the dog has different flavour pouches ever day in case he gets bored. He thinks the dog does not care as long as he eats !

IfNot · 05/08/2019 10:15

Yeah all the time. There are certain things we love, like curry that we are happy to eat 2 days running. Besides most people in lots of countries will have very similar things to eat for breakfast lunch and dinner, never mind 2 days in a row!
I don't "serve" anything though. Sorry but it's one of those MN expressions I hate 🙉

hidinginthenightgarden · 05/08/2019 10:18

Yes. We either change it up a bit like you have suggested or if something that can’t be, like Dahl, then I would have it for example Monday and Wednesday.

OldAndWornOut · 05/08/2019 10:20

Yes.
It's food, we're lucky to have enough, so I'm not worried about it.

OMGshefoundmeout · 05/08/2019 10:20

I quite often have the same thing 3 meals in a row. I am thinking of a particularly delicious doner kebab I ordered recently. It did me for dinner the first night, breakfast the next day and then again for dinner that night (although I had to add some more salad that time). Portion control has gone berserk at that restaurant as I only ordered a small one. If I’d ordered a large I’d probably still be eating it now.

SpeedyShutter · 05/08/2019 10:23

Yes. We deliberately make enough in the slow cooker to serve all 4 of us the exact same thing two (sometimes 3) nights in a row.
