Traditional dinners

DM and DF eat a meat, potato and boiled veg dinner (roast, steak, chops, sausages, fish etc) at least 5 days a week. In my house, we only do this maybe once a week, with the main meals being more pasta, stir fry, curry type dishes. Which is more usual these days? I’m convinced we are more of a ‘one-pot’ society whereas DM is adamant that most people still eat the way her and DF do.

Massively depends on a person's age and where they live.

Someone in their twenties living in a trendy part of London.... Probably won't be having shepherds pie, sausages and chops every night.

Elderly person living in a traditional northern village will probably not be eating avocado toast and chia smoothies every day.

dudsville · 03/08/2019 20:50

I wouldn't want to eat meat every day, but the protein and veg meal sounds healthier than the meals that are heavily themed around a sauce. I'd like that.

overandunder9 · 03/08/2019 20:52

@formerbabe That’s exactly what I said to DM. She still not convinced Grin.

A mix of everything. Tongith we had home amde sausage roolls with veg. Yesterday grileld chicken with salads and bread.

I do not cook pasta or rice very often- in fact i decided this week i need to do that more as it is easy. Chicken pasta with a creamy sauce and broccoli this week.

My go-to family dinner though is usually a roasted meat of some sort with loads of vegetables usually cooked as a gratin.

excuse the typos! i am typing with a cat on my lap. :)

AtleastitsnotMonday · 03/08/2019 21:03

I don’t think we are either, meals certainly aren’t all accompanied by potatoes or contain meat by any means but equally aren’t all one pots. We eat a lot of salads with things like Cajun chicken or tuna steak or in colder months with hot veg. We do almost always have a traditional roast on a Sunday.
But there are loads of traditional one pot dishes, hot pots, cottage pie, fish pie, stews, casseroles, toad in the hole etc. So I guess most people do eat more like you but with a few traditional meals chucked in.

SavoyCabbage · 03/08/2019 21:12

We don't eat any meat and three veg type meals. We went to someone's house and had a roast chicken Sunday dinner and on the way home my ten year old said 'that was a funny meal.'

JapaneseBirdPainting · 03/08/2019 21:13

what do you eat Savoy ?

overandunder9 · 03/08/2019 21:24

@japanesebirdpainting Oooo a love a good gratin!

JapaneseBirdPainting · 03/08/2019 21:25

me too. :) It's a bit of a weakness. Currently going crazy over cauliflower and spinach gratin!

BenWillbondsPants · 03/08/2019 21:27

We're a bit of everything. Pasta dishes, fish, stir frys, currys, tomorrow will be toad in the hole, mash, onion gravy and veg.

Gingerkittykat · 03/08/2019 21:29

I don't know when the last time I ate potatoes was, tonight's dinner is chicken, lemon, spinach and chickpea stew which is more typical of how I eat.

I do love a good roast but very rarely cook one.

Bloodybridget · 03/08/2019 21:34

When I stopped being vegetarian we started eating quite a few "protein and three veg" meals, I really enjoy them. This evening, for example, lamb chop, jacket potato, spinach. But we still have lots of stir fries, curries, pasta, paellas, stews and casseroles. We are old-ish women, if that's relevant.

user1486131602 · 03/08/2019 21:36

Our house is 50/50 all the usuals as per your comments but a roast most sundays! My rule, to get the family around the table talking catching up on their week!
But, whatever works!

bitchfromhell · 03/08/2019 21:38

We probably eat half and half. We love the meat and three veg type meals, although I'd more often do squash or sweet potato than normal spuds. We then also have risotto/pasta/different stuff about half the time.
We also have one night a week with no real cooking, so takeaway or melting fish cakes or shop bought pizza.

Kungfupanda67 · 03/08/2019 21:39

My neighbours are in their 70s and every single day at 4.30 we know they’re cooking the veg to go with their meat and potatoes!

I very rarely eat potatoes, and if we do they’re usually wedges or sweet potato chips. Our meals are generally bolognese, stir fries, fish stews, Spanish chicken, curries, that sort of thing. We don’t have a dishwasher so any meal that only uses one or two pans is a winner. Pork chops, mash and veg uses 3 saucepans, a colander and a roasting tray... for a meal that is no nicer than a stir fry or a stew that’s a lot of washing up!

RainbowMum11 · 03/08/2019 21:48

DD is 6 and her favourite meal is mash, veg & gravy - bonus if she can have chicken/sausages & Yorkshire puds & stuffing too.
While she also absolutely loves fish & chips, lasagne, spag Bol, she does like 'proper' meals the best.
I'm happy with pasta & sauce, curry or anything really, just depends on time & ingredients available.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 03/08/2019 21:54

@SavoyCabbage your ten year old thought a roast was a 'funny meal'? - agree with above - what meals do you eat?

We have 'meat and three veg' quite a lot - mostly cos we love veg and find this easy but also quite expensive so I am always looking for other ideas :-)

BackforGood · 03/08/2019 22:27

We probably are somewhere inbetween too.
(Working family, 1 teen, 2 -when they are home- in their early 20s).

We had cottage pie tonight.
Takeaway (Chinese) the night before
Cold chicken, cold potatoes and salad (leftover from roast)
"Sunday" dinner (on Wed)
Sausage beans egg and chips
Curry and naan on Monday

Can't remember before that.

Love51 · 03/08/2019 22:40

We had salmon and peas and carrots tonight. But I'm saving the spuds to go with a beef bourginone tomorrow so we had cous cous instead.
My kids are very fussy about sauces so we've started having roast meat or fish / sausage (sometimes veggie) with veg type meals fairly often. They are 5 and 7. In not intending them to eat the beef meal tomorrow as it is very wine heavy which they won't like. They will eat the mash and leeks and broccoli and carrots though. I might just stir fry a bit of beef for them.

SavoyCabbage · 04/08/2019 08:11

We do have pasta meals but we have fish, rice and salad a lot and we eat a lot of West Indian food. So rice and peas, stewed chicken, curries with chickpeas. . She sees chicken as something that you have with lentils.

KitKat1985 · 04/08/2019 08:16

We do a bit of both. Tonight we're having pasta but I'm planning Toad in the Hole for tomorrow.

I do think there's a bit of a generational thing here and I think as a rule of thumb (obviously there's exceptions) the older generation tend to prefer to eat 'meat, potatoes and veg' meals more often than the younger generations do.

Nameusernameuser · 04/08/2019 08:21

Meat and 3 veg kind of family here. We'll usually have pasta and meatballs once a fortnight, a pie or something, cauli cheese and bread.
Everything is made completely from scratch, but we are 22, have a toddler and work so throwing something in the oven/pressure cooker and steaming some veg is just quick and easy.
DP grew up on freezer food and bacon sandwiches, whereas my mum cooked food from all over the world so I try and incorporate that into DPs diet slowly.
