Traditional dinners

DM and DF eat a meat, potato and boiled veg dinner (roast, steak, chops, sausages, fish etc) at least 5 days a week. In my house, we only do this maybe once a week, with the main meals being more pasta, stir fry, curry type dishes. Which is more usual these days? I’m convinced we are more of a ‘one-pot’ society whereas DM is adamant that most people still eat the way her and DF do.

A mix here, I’m 55.
Last week

Mon - pork chops, new potatoes, salad
Tues - Curry and rice
Wed - Pizza
Thursday - Spag bol
Friday - steak/chips/salad (out for dinner)
Sat - Salmon, veggie noodles
Today - chicken fajitas

No one needs to eat like that these days, its food designed for the past when work was manual labour or people walked, cycled to work.

Well I guess we're no one then because DH does a manual labour job and I cycle a 25 mile round trip to/from work.......

Mixture in this house.

Winter we tend to eat more potatoes & veg type meals with either meat, pie or sausage casserole done in the slow cooker. Sometimes a nice stodgy chunky veg soup done in the slow cooker.

Summer we eat more pasta/rice - sometimes a filled pasta with sauce on its own sometimes plain as a side to chicken.

Sometimes we even have boiled baby pots on the side of a baked pasta dish OH MY GOD THE CARBS 😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣

I am a bit of a foodie and like to try different things. Having a veggie DD who does veganuary every year has made me far more open to new ideas. TBH I would find a meat and veg style meal on a regular basis rather dull. We very rarely eat stews as we aren't that keen on them.

I doubt that you could call deepest darkest rural South Yorkshire where we live cosmopolitan, but it is rather telling that the few excellent ethnic restaurants round here are always booked up for several weeks if not months ahead.

I think last night's meal was probably the most "traditional" I have made in ages - cold poached salmon, potato salad and cucumber salad. And for the first time in ages I plan to do a roast chicken for tonight, but I think I will spice it up with some aromatic middle Eastern spices and serve it with cous cous.

Apologies if my post made me sound like a crashing food snob. I eat just about anything. I just get bored easily with the same style of food. That's all.

Sockworkshop · 04/08/2019 10:23

Funnily enough I cycle to work also Frangi
My colleagues think its really wierd .

Oh come on, you know what I mean, we,are a nation who are increasingly inactive and obese .
No one needs to eat all that stodgy stuff.
In the 40s,50s and 60s everything was manual, we scrubbed clothes clean etc
We havent adjusted our eating habits and obesity is normalised.

Interesting that some people rarely eat meat without a sauce. With animals bred to produce lean meat nowadays I suppose most are flavourless compared to meat dishes of times gone by. We do a mixture but all meals will have protein, carbs and veg

bitchfromhell · 04/08/2019 10:57

@Sockworkshop I have to disagree, the obesity crisis wouldn't exist if we ate more meat and 3 veg dishes. It's actually a balanced plate.
The onset of convenience food is largely to blame for many obesity issues. Importing foods to supermarkets has also contributed.
If families still grew their own fruit and vegetables and ate what was seasonal, along with local meat, as they did years ago we'd be a much healthier nation.

BenWillbondsPants · 04/08/2019 11:39

@bitchfromhell I agree. So much overloading on carbs now: massive portions of pasta, bread etc IMO.

Bluesheep8 · 04/08/2019 11:56

pope many thanks, that sounds delicious Smile

Crinkle77 · 04/08/2019 13:07

I've gone right off rice and pasta and back on to traditional meals. I just don't have the time or the inclination during the week to cook a proper tea. I'm always starving when I get in from work and want something fairly quick but at the weekend I always try and do something proper.

Sockworkshop · 04/08/2019 13:22

bitch if people ate 1950s portions then maybe ,plus if they did the 50s levels of exercise activity/ no heating.
But they dont.
Its huge portions plus no exercise.
I do agree about the snacks, carbs etc
