Just that really. Any clues?

Isn't it plumbed into your normal water pipes?

CalmFizz · 03/08/2019 14:25

Is it plumbed in?

Ohthepressure · 03/08/2019 14:27

There's usually a filter built in which needs to be replaced regularly. They're expensive though, I don't know how far you can stretch one filter.

Ours is just an unfiltered tank (holds maybe two litres) in the door with a push dispenser on the front. I fill it up when empty. Never had any issues on over six years. Just clean it maybe once a month with warm water.

fedup21 · 03/08/2019 14:33

We are getting a fridge with one of these-any tips for filling it up? Do you take the whole unit out and fill up up directly from the tap or do you pour water straight into it from a long-spout jug?

naivemelody · 03/08/2019 15:18

No it's not a plumbed in version. Just a 4.5lt tank on the inside of the fridge door.

@fedup21 I tried to fill it with a jug to save taking it out but it wasn't very successful. I then just filled it from the tap. The actual tank container lifts out really easily though.

I have the same as Noeuf and also give it a wash in hot soapy water once a month. I keep an old wine bottle to fill mine (and change the wine bottle the next time I have a bottle of wine) because it is a bit fiddly to take out.

I thinks it is great and we drink much more water because we have it. None of my teens drink soft drinks, only water, and I think this is a large part of the reason why.

That sounds like the one we are getting-is it a Samsung?!

Great idea to refill from an Empty wine bottle!

Screamanger · 03/08/2019 15:48

We have one similar to this, water is good for 12 weeks, you could probably push it longer if you want. Every 6ish months I’ll flush through some bleach

naivemelody · 03/08/2019 15:52

@fedup21 yes it's a Samsung.

Great idea about the wine bottle.

Oh god I have a fridge like that. No one except for me fills the damn thing up so when I want cold water there is none.
Run away from them unless your happy to refill but never have any water.

SouthWestmom · 03/08/2019 15:54

I use either an empty milk plastic carton or a jug. Too much hassle to take it out.

naivemelody · 03/08/2019 15:55

@Iwantacookie I think it will be my job to fill it. I can't trust dh, he would just let it run dry and walk away Grin

naivemelody · 03/08/2019 15:57

@Noeuf milk bottle is a good idea, the big 6pint one.

I found with mine as long as the water was not standing still for more than 2 days it was fine until I wash it every other week. I fill mine with a tall lidded water jug. So when I want water there is a secret stash for me and I can use it to get some instant refill

SouthWestmom · 03/08/2019 16:00

Yes I use that. Just keep it empty near the sink with the lid on.

Yup I am also the only water filler upper in the house although the teens guzzle the lot as soon as it's done.

We just bought a water filter and cooler which I thought would be better but they hate it as it isn't ice cold.

eurochick · 03/08/2019 16:16

We moved in to a house that had one of these. The house was left fairly clean throughout (so they weren't complete mingers) but the inside of the water thing was black with mould🤢

I would never have one having seen that.

SouthWestmom · 03/08/2019 16:19

Gross. It doesn't have to be though if you clean it.

yikesanddang · 04/08/2019 05:13

I'm confused as to the point of the non plumbed in ones. Why not just use the tap rather than fill a jug from the tap and then leave it in a reservoir for a few days? Seems like so much more chance of bacteria getting in. And from what I read, some hold only 2-4 litres. That would be about half a day in my family. Seems pointless. Seems like a complicated way to drink tap water.

CornishButNotBeachLover · 04/08/2019 05:55

Because it's cold from the fridge. Our tap water is not that lovely, crisp cold during summer months.
Ours is used and refilled frequently so doesn't have time to sit and not be fit to drink.

StarlightLady · 04/08/2019 07:14

I got rid of mine! You can clean the reservoir regularly, but it’s impossible to clean the piping between the reservoir and the outlet tap. Yuk!

yikesanddang · 04/08/2019 07:16

Cornish you'd be better off with a covered jug in the fridge. The pipes can't be cleaned properly and can grow fungus.

I don't know why but I find water that has sat around for a few hours tastes weird too.

StarlightLady · 04/08/2019 08:05

@yikesanddang - exactly. I discovered the problem by finding little black “dots” in the water.

ChippyMinton · 04/08/2019 08:12

DH uses ours, I never do. I was excited to get one but agree with others they are pointless and a huge faff. And I drink 3l water a day. Would love a plumbed in one though, or a hot/chilled water tap.
