I have recently had a sleep study done at home and have received a appointment to go back and discuss the results
However it is requesting I have a blood test for a few things and I am v confused and worried as she never mentioned I would need this
I am absolutely terrified something is really very wrong now
Has anyone had this after a sleep study test ?

I don't recognise all those tests from my tiny phone screen but according to the NHS website, it's normal to take bloods while testing for sleep apnea to look for other conditions that may be making you tired, so they may well just be routine checks. I wish medical people explained these things properly and it's easy for me to say try not to worry, but if you're feeling unwell, hopefully this is the path to feeling better. Take care.

The first is for thyroid function the second for cholesterol and the last for diabetes. Ate you much overweight OP? My GP did these tests recently when I was also tested for arthritis. All came back normal.

Why couldn't they just bloody say why

They are trying to eliminate other things which could cause excess tiredness in case your sleep study comes back normal. Not sure about the others, but diabetes is more common in people with sleep apnoea, so it’s a good idea to check for it. Doesn’t mean you’ve got it just because they’re testing - do you have any other symptoms, e.g. feeling thirsty and needing to pee a lot?

Emmabryant123 · 03/08/2019 13:56

No other symptoms no.

I don't feel tired in the day except for first few hours in the morning either

I believe it’s standard to test for diabetes if someone complains of being tired all the time. It doesn’t necessarily mean they think you have it.

Emmabryant123 · 03/08/2019 14:26

I told the consultant I don't feel tired all the time though which I really don't

Diagnosis is like a sieve, you just look at all the common things that could cause the symptoms the patient is complaining of, and as each one Is ruled out it” falls through the sieve “, and the diagnosis is the thing that is left.

Obviously there are direct tests for some things, but generally it’s a process of elimination.

Spots not so much that the medics think you have diabetes, thyroid problems or raised cholesterol, it’s just that they need to make sure they can rule it out before treating you.

Hope treatment goes well.

PuzzledObserver · 03/08/2019 15:55

What prompted the sleep test if you don’t feel tired all the time?

Emmabryant123 · 03/08/2019 15:56

I snore heavily and wake up gasping for air sometimes.
Feel v groggy in the mornings for a few hours to

OP posts:
Jeffter · 03/08/2019 16:02

They are ruling stuff out. Those tests are standard.
No one can tell you for sure that you don't have any of those conditions unless the bloods categorically rule them out.
Please try not to panic.

Emmabryant123 · 03/08/2019 16:07

Are they standard for apenoa then.
Surely she could of told me this though?

OP posts:
ImNotYourGranny · 03/08/2019 16:12

I never had any blood tests as part of my apnea assessment, just the overnight monitor thingy. I had blood tests for things like diabetes and thyroid function in the run up to the sleep apnea referral though, just not as part of it.

Emmabryant123 · 03/08/2019 16:18

Ah maybe it's because my GP didn't test for beforehand?

OP posts:
Emmabryant123 · 04/08/2019 11:59

Still feeling very worried this morning
The department opens tomorrow morning
Would it be ok to ring and ask about why these have been requested?
I was aware that CPAP is the treat ment for sleep apnea and can stop all associated things like heart attacks etc
Terrified they now think I have heart disease

OP posts:
Emmabryant123 · 04/08/2019 15:10

Has anyone anyone else any experience with this please ?

OP posts:
Emmabryant123 · 04/08/2019 15:11

Another thing is my resting heart rate has always been around 100 and goes up to about 120 after walking but no GP has ever seem concerned about this before

OP posts:
Crinkle77 · 04/08/2019 15:45

You're panicking unnecessarily. It's just routine to rule other things out.

Emmabryant123 · 04/08/2019 15:59

Oh I agree
We are also TTC #2 which the consultant said was absolutely fine to do with possible sleep apnea and with apnea to but obviously if I have diabetes etc this is something I would need to inform a midwife or my GP off if a pregnancy happens

I mean this in the kindest way, buy do you have health anxiety OP? You seem to be over thinking routine tests and a thorough approach.

DianaT1969 · 04/08/2019 16:02

*but, not buy. Agh this phone!

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/08/2019 16:02

Have you got health anxiety?.

Emmabryant123 · 04/08/2019 16:04
