Best vaginal/vulva(?) wipes/soap for getting rid of odour and keeping moist and pH balanced?

I mean external washing (not douching etc) - please recommend ones you've tried that have worked (esp if you tend to have a bit of an odour (fishy) probably as a result of bv (all cures for bv only work temporarily for me, so at this point I just want a quick cover-up) but hopefully not something that dries out the area/causes pH imbalances.

Thank you

Water! There are no chemicals that should be near your vulva. It self-cleans.

Has your BV been officially diagnosed? It’s really not normal to have so much odour that you are conscious of it. Can you go back to your GP?

Squiff70 · 02/08/2019 22:52

If you have a fishy odour you need to speak to your pharmacist or see your GP or practice nurse as it may need treatment. Plain water really is the best for cleaning your genitals but use a very mild soap if you must.

The vagina self cleans not the outside.

OP have you been to get swabs done first and foremost to try to get to the bottom of it all?

You need to be properly treated for BV.

Doubleraspberry · 02/08/2019 22:58

Sorry, of course you’re right, Gamer. But the vulva is also very sensitive (if not self cleaning Blush) and can usually be cleaned with water alone - it’s hard to stop what you’re using on the outside getting inside where it can really irritate.

64sNewName · 02/08/2019 23:03

Don’t try to deal with it using wipes/soap. You’ll just mess up the imbalance of flora even more and it won’t really disguise the problem.

How do you get on with the bv gel stuff from the chemist? Afaik it’s safe to use that frequently/regularly to keep things in balance. If sex is a trigger, it should really help sort it.

Flightsoffancy · 02/08/2019 23:18

Please try taking the Optibac probiotics for women (purple box). Sorry, I know you want an instant fix and this isn't it, but they will go to work quickly (a day or two) and help long term. I agree that wipes or washes should be avoided and can make the problem worse. Always towels caused me an awful problem, Kotex solved it! But just the period itself sometimes causes a problem for a day or two after and the probiotics always help.

Brillo pad and some jif
Does the job

The best thing ever is multi-gyn actigel.
I was suffering from recurrent thrush and this has pretty much cured me! It’s actually a medication for treating BV and basically works by keeping vaginal PH at whatever number is needed to keep a healthy balance of fauna.

I have found around 2.5ml inserted with an old medicine syringe is the perfect dosage for me. Any more is far too messy. I generally use it daily, then every other day, then twice a week, then once a week. After that I just use as and when required. So If I’m feeling a bit sore/dry, after swimming or baths, I always wash then apply after sex - bit of a spoiler but if I don’t I will get thrush again, I also use instead of lube.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 02/08/2019 23:23

Water and a flannel. I have Bey occasionally used mild liquid soap but wipe sand washes aren't going to solve your problem, you need to see your gp and even get a referral if what they give you doesn't work.

boydoggies · 02/08/2019 23:24

Balance Activ gel is good. What is your trigger? Heavy/ prolonged bleeding? Menopause? IUD? Sex?

user1493494961 · 02/08/2019 23:25

Hate the word moist.

Babdoc · 02/08/2019 23:31

Hobnobsaremyfave, that’s priceless! I think it must be the modern version of the old wire brush and detttol jokes. Grin

FishyFannyFix · 03/08/2019 00:06

I had this (the fishy smell) no other symptoms. No amount of washing or tee tree wipes, etc. made any difference. I found a forum on the subject and tried a combination of Vitamin C, Garlic and Folic Acid and it was gone in a couple of days. I like to take 1000 mg Vit C and high strength odourless garlic capsules, but quite likely a regular dose would work just as well. Good luck, it’s bloody awful.

Canistan does a foam wash that you can buy on Amazon. Can't link it but it's canesfresh with a blue lid. Works wonders and doesn't irritate

GrapefruitIsGross · 03/08/2019 00:24

I remember watching ran Embarassing Bodies (I know, but bear with me) when a woman complained of having a really strong odour down there, constantly washing etc but she was barely keeping on top of it.

They did swabs and when they came back from the lab, there was actually too little bacteria. Basically she’d been over washing and it was causing her natural chemistry to go berserk which kept perpetuating the cycle.

Like others say, go to the doctor. This is so common.

Branster · 03/08/2019 00:34

Please go to the doctor (the specialist walk in clinic usually attached to a hospital). You shouldn’t have this issue in the first place so don’t put up with it. Only use water and plain soap (no fragrance). Cotton underwear. Your partner might also need to have some treatment depending on what the problem is.
Don’t self medicate or self treat, just make sure you get an accurate diagnosis first and follow the prescribed treatment.

TheNightof1000Fans · 03/08/2019 00:43

Dear Jesus.

Unless you have an infection, and need medicated cream or a pessary, water is all you need, inside and out.

Angelf1sh · 03/08/2019 09:39

If water isn’t sufficient, you need to see a dr. Don’t waste your money on wipes.

happychange · 03/08/2019 09:44

I went to see a dr for the same problem s you, then she advised to stop using any soap and just use water to wash. It was amazing! I never have any problems after

AnnaMagnani · 03/08/2019 09:47

All soaps/gels/wipes sold for the vulva and vagina should be banned. They are upsetting your natural bacteria.

Water.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/08/2019 09:50

If the gp hasn’t got a cure for you they should send you to gynae to get sorted.

Crunchymum · 03/08/2019 14:39

I hear a Zoflora bath can be quite refreshing!

missmouse101 · 03/08/2019 14:46

Do people really only use water? I have a thorough clean there every morning with mild shower cream and then a very careful rinse off. Never had a problem, but I can't see water alone is enough?

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 03/08/2019 15:11

Yes, missmouse, we really do. A mild shower cream isn't even designed for use there! Why not try with just water and a flannel?

At the risk of TMI, I take the shower head down and direct it there for a thorough rinse (water only). On days I don't have a shower ,(steady on, pearl clutches!) A flannel and water is enough. I don't smell down there, something I'm very conscious of.
