How best to get rid of fleas in house?

twirlypoo · 02/08/2019 22:13

Other than burning it down, obviously.

I had a thread a few days ago where I said I really wasn’t coping, and to top it off it would appear the cats now have fleas.

How do I best nuke them? I have had flea bombs in the past, but I’m out of date. My laundry is all on the landing - do I need to redo it all? What do I do about soft furnishings? Will a bomb sort that too?

I used indorex You need to treat the cats with the stuff the vet sells. Frontline work for a bit for me but now it’s stopped working!!

Now I’m on the vet stuff. More expensive but not seen fleas since we started using that plus sprayed carpets etc.

kendoddsdogsdead · 02/08/2019 22:15

I'm going through the same thing so I'm following with interest

Joopy · 02/08/2019 22:16

Get cat treatment and spray. Treat the cats, don't ban them from any room as they become flea killing machines, hoover and spray everyday. We tried the bombs but I didn't find them very effective.

TinchyP · 02/08/2019 22:17

Acclaim spray did the job for us for the soft furnishings. Apparently frontline no longer works so we use Advantage.

TrentBridge · 02/08/2019 22:17

Hoover, hoover, hoover every day. I've found it's just like nits in children - you need to break the cycle and get rid of the eggs before they hatch. It's laborious but it works.

ohhdearymepleasehelpme · 02/08/2019 22:19

Pets t home do. Brilliant flea bomb and spray.
You do have to leave the house for a few hours whilst it works, but it got rid of the fleas for us huge spiders after but you win some and lose some Grin

ohhdearymepleasehelpme · 02/08/2019 22:20

Sorry posted too soon. I'm think we had lots of spiders after as it seemed to kill any and every bug that lives in the house so no food for them to feed on. If that makes sense

twirlypoo · 02/08/2019 22:20

I’m making notes so I can blitz this tomorrow - thank you.

So for the order I do it in: treat cats, wash all laundry again? spray everywhere? Bomb place? Hoover?

Does that sound right?? Can I still get treatments at pets at home type place?

Thank you all, I’m lying here itching now Blush

We had a massive flea infestation when my pfb was 4 weeks old, I nearly lost it. What we did: treated affected animal, hoovered everywhere, Indorex sprayed entire house. Be prepared to spray again the following year in case the eggs are hiding in the carpet.

BikeRunSki · 02/08/2019 22:21

Get a pest control person in. It was cheaper than I thought it was going to be.

RezCowgirl · 02/08/2019 22:22

Spot treatment for the cats and indorex for the house

madeyemoodysmum · 02/08/2019 22:23

The vet will sell you the best stuff. Over the counter stuff can be a waste of money and you end up doing it twice.

Pets at home usually have a vet in store. Ours does anyway.

TrickOrRuddyTreat · 02/08/2019 22:25

We’ve literally just had the same issue and a combo of Advantage on the cats (agree Frontline is now shit) and Indorex on the carpets/furnishings meant we were flea-free within 24 hours

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 02/08/2019 22:25

Also following. My house is a joke. Have done Indorex, natural oils, tea tree spray, flea bomb, hoovering, washing AND have done the pets twice in a month. Pretty sure the heat doesn't help

justasking111 · 02/08/2019 22:28

Hoover every day and empty contents into bin outside every time. Plus spray furniture carpets, de flea pet and pray for cold weather.

LemonTreeLemon · 02/08/2019 22:33

Indorex.

IamaBluebird · 02/08/2019 23:25

Tried all sorts the only thing that worked was indorex. Good luck.

Elphame · 02/08/2019 23:37

I had a flea infestation last year. I flea treated the cat and dog, washed their bedding at a high temperature and then used my steam mop around the skirting boards and on all the chairs and other soft furnishings.

I've had no further problems.

Ilovesweatybollocks · 03/08/2019 18:43

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I read that there's gonna be masses of the horrible things soon as it's been perfect weather conditions for them to breed. Might be worth getting household spray in ready to kill them

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/08/2019 19:36

Which spot on are you putting on the cats.

bedunkalilt · 03/08/2019 19:45

Do you flea treat your cats regularly? I know that’s not the key to your current situation but I wasn’t sure from your post. We get ours from the vet, called Stronghold, very effective and also protects against some worms (although we still do a worming pill every 3 months). Flea treatment is something like £9/cat (as in, per little plastic vial thing). We do it monthly and has worked very well, when we adopted they had some fleas despite being treated by the shelter but the Stronghold sorted them right out. It’s also supposed to protect the home (somehow, can’t remember why!). So I recommend something like Stronghold flea treatment and then keep it up monthly.

Also another vote for Indorex. You can get it on Amazon if you can’t find it locally.

mindproject · 03/08/2019 19:51

I found Indorex to be a waste of money, because when you use it you need to vacuum every day to get rid of the fleas. Vacuuming every day and bleaching tiled and wooden floors every day gets rid of flees anyway without the need for Indorex, and saves money.

You also need to treat the cats every 3 or 4 weeks with Advantage II. No other flea treatment worked on our cat, all the others were a waste of money, including Frontline. We have been flea free for a few years now.

Klouise777 · 03/08/2019 19:56

We were using front line on our cats and it didn't work so rang the vet and they stopped selling it as had loads of people say the same. Now got some three month spot on type thing from the vets, can't remember what's it called. We used spray on the carpets however I read somewhere and I can't be sure if it's true but it says fleas can't live in carpet so providing you manage to to get rid of the fleas off the animals it should solve everything!? Fleas in the carpet would have only been there a short time

BrioLover · 03/08/2019 20:04

Another vote for a vet flea treatment that is not Frontline. Then hoover and mop everything, make sure you get right into all the little crevices etc. I used Indorex too but inside wardrobes and on our mattresses, and the sofas etc. Kept hoovering every day.

We're on month 2 of treatment and haven't had any fleas return. Things were so bad a few weeks ago that I could see the little fuckers inside the hoover (I used Indorex on that too and only ever emptied the hoover in the outside bin - if you have a bagged hoover then put that straight outside too.) and we were being bitten constantly.

Ours came from our new house - our poor cat. She's an indoor cat so wouldn't have brought them in, and she's very elderly so struggled with the infestation.
