How do you have your tea? Teach me to like tea!

I've never liked tea, but I think I want to get into it. How do you have yours? How should I try it? Which brand of teabag? Strong? Weak? Milky? Sugary?
I only got into coffee about 5 years ago, progressed from mochas to latte and now cappuccino. I now love my daily coffee but I still don't like instant. I like milk and I have a sweet tooth so I've been trying milky tea with 2 sugars but it's not doing much for me, I just don't find it tastes of much.

I hate milky tea!

At home i use lidls own brand tea bags. Boil kettle, pour onto teabag (in mug) let sit for a minute or two, stir and squish teabag with spoon, remove teabag, little splosh of milk. Done. Sometimes I like it without milk. Always I like it with a biscuit.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 01/08/2019 15:22

I like tesco own brand tea. Leave the tea bag in the water until its nice and dark, then add one splash of milk. I don't tend to add sugar but if you find it too bitter then add more milk/sugar x

GreenShadow · 01/08/2019 15:25

Now I couldn't drink the tea made by the first 2 posted above. I need it nice and weak. If just using a teabag, it's boiling water on, and teabag out almost immediately. As a reluctant tea drinker, I'd suggest the OP starts with it weak. Best to use a teapot and don't leave it too long before pouring

Black, no sugar, medium strong, Yorkshire tea. I drink buckets of it!!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/08/2019 15:37

I never enjoyed tea, until I had a cup with no milk at my neighbour's house one day. Now I'm a positive addict!

SpankYouMuchly · 01/08/2019 15:48

You might not like tea as you are sensitive to tannins. They are in coffee and red wine. I don't like any of them.

FiveLittlePigs · 01/08/2019 15:50

Yorkshire Tea bag in a mug, add just-boiled water, stand for a minute, stir well and remove bag then add a small splash of milk.

Nice strong cuppa.

CadburySpira · 01/08/2019 15:57

Ok, currently drinking as per the first 2 replies: teabag left in for 3 mins, squeezed out, splash of milk. Still not finding it tastes of much, not strong and not bitter either. Is that the tea bag? I'm at work so just using the PG Tips supplied.

I've never liked tea or red wine, but love proper coffee.
I wouldn't force myself to like something. Why do you want to like tea?

I really don't understand the hysteria around tea

coconuttelegraph · 01/08/2019 16:05

Why would you bother trying to like something you don't, you're not missing out by not liking a particular food or drink.

You could spend your whole life trying every possible type of leaf and combination - just why?

helpmee · 01/08/2019 16:06

Yorkshire tea bags are the one! I used to be a big pg tips lover but the quality of their tea has been rubbish over the past few years.
Tea bag in, boiling water on top, drop of milk and then squeeze the tea bag till its the color you like. I like mine quite strong, if you can taste the milk then it needs to be stronger! No sugar Brew
If you're looking for a flavorsome drink i dont really think you'll find it with tea, i find it more of a warm comforting drink.

CadburySpira · 01/08/2019 16:07

Frazzlerock no particular reason, currently bored at work so thought it would be a good project! It would be good to have a warm drink to drink in the winter though. Hot chocolate can get boring (particularly the low calorie ones) and I don't like fruit or herbal teas either.

I buy Scottish breakfast tea from aldi. Pop that and 2 sugars in my cup and pour over water. Leave it for a few mins and then pop the milk in then squeeze the teabag. Perfect. I love a nice cuppa, not a big coffee drinker but I like an instant occasionally.

ParrotsForLife · 01/08/2019 16:12

Asda finest chai tea.
Boiling water, stir the bag around for ten seconds or until I get bored. Squeeze the bag out. Splash of milk.
Won’t go back to drinking normal tea for all the tea in China.

CadburySpira · 01/08/2019 16:14

helpmee perhaps that is my problem, I'm looking for flavour where there is none!

I drink Clipper tea. I think there are lots of factors that need to be considered - the hardness of your water being a big one. I live in an area with very hard water that's travelled through chalk. Clipper tea tastes so clean in my water. Yorkshire tea tastes better at my aunt's house in London than where I live. Ask your colleagues/friends which tea they use would be my advice.

Yearinyearout · 01/08/2019 16:18

Yorkshire tea, nice and strong, not too much milk, one sugar.

Yearinyearout · 01/08/2019 16:19

Pg tips tastes like gnats piss. Avoid.

GreenShadow · 01/08/2019 16:19

I've always assumed that my dislike of strong tea is related to a dislike of red wine and coffee (and cola). Never sure if it's tanin or caffine.

Soola · 01/08/2019 16:22

I’m 53, I’ve had a few sips from a cup of tea over the years, probably not even amounting to one cup. It’s absolutely vile.

Butterfly005 · 01/08/2019 16:24

Earl grey is my favourite! Not too strong, with a bit of milk.

DontCallMeShitley · 01/08/2019 16:33

Yorkshire Gold has flavour.
Earl Grey makes a change.
Twinings English Breakfast only when out because catering tea bags are just dust in a bag and are disgusting.

I drink tea all day and a proper coffee at the weekend, usually just one from a really good place.

AdaColeman · 01/08/2019 16:35

Assam tea is the way to go, I like Clipper Fair trade or Sainsburys Taste the Difference. Always use fresh water. not water that has been standing around or been previously boiled.

PolkaDotted · 01/08/2019 16:37

Don't squeeze the teabag! It makes the tea much more bitter as it releases more tannic acid.

Thatagain · 01/08/2019 16:46

I do not like standard tea I don't like the smell or taste. I do however drink fruit tea it doesn't taste of much but it smells really good. There are so many to choose I do prefer puka tea. No milk no sugar no caffeine. Although I do drink a lot of coffee and I have it black. After 1 o'clock I am on my tea (fruit tea)
