How do you have your tea? Teach me to like tea!

I've never liked tea, but I think I want to get into it. How do you have yours? How should I try it? Which brand of teabag? Strong? Weak? Milky? Sugary?
I only got into coffee about 5 years ago, progressed from mochas to latte and now cappuccino. I now love my daily coffee but I still don't like instant. I like milk and I have a sweet tooth so I've been trying milky tea with 2 sugars but it's not doing much for me, I just don't find it tastes of much.

Tea Pigs everyday brew.
If brewed in the teapot, I use 3 teabags and pour nearly boiled water in to fill the pot to the top and leave for 5 + mins to brew. I put a splash of milk in the cup and then pour the tea in.

If brewed in the cup, I use one teabag. I pour nearly boiled water on top and leave for 3-5 mins before removing the bag (don't squeeze as it releases the tannins in the leaves which gives that bitter flavour) and pour in a splash of milk.

I don't have sugar but dh has honey in his.

Twinnings English Breakfast tea is the best. Medium strength, milk with two sugars. Preferably with a chocolate hobnob or a gingernut.

PixieLumos · 01/08/2019 16:53

Everyone’s got their own special way with tea - you’ve got to find yours too OP. I like to leave it to brew for a minute or two, give the bag a light squeeze, a dash of milk (too much milk is the worst!) and one spoon of sugar. And don’t forget your biscuit.

Twinnings strong breakfast tea first thing. Dorset tea in the afternoon. Decaf pg tips in the evening.

overnightangel · 01/08/2019 17:09

Tea.
Early Grey.
Hot.

Make it so Wink

iklboo · 01/08/2019 17:18

Very strong - Yorkshire tea if possible.
Very little skimmed milk.

Hardly anybody takes their tea like mine Grin

Aragog · 01/08/2019 17:22

I find tea is fairly sweet tasting anyway so couldn't dream of adding sugar!

I do love a cup of tea though. I really need to sort a teapot and tea leaves, but at the moment lifespan's too busy - and when I want tea, I just do it quick!

I like Yorkshire tea best. I currently drink decaf, due to SVT issues with my heart, though do have the odd caffeinated one whilst out and about. Yorkshire decaf tastes the best to me, the nearest to normal tea anyway. I have it with a splash of milk. I don't like milk particularly so definitely not milky!

I don't like flavoured tea, scented teas like Earl grey, or Green tea.

Went to Singapore at Easter and loved the black teas there in some of the 'posher' tea rooms.

Hadalifeonce · 01/08/2019 17:23

White tea no milk, bag left in freshly boiled water for about 5 mins.

ScreamingValenta · 01/08/2019 17:25

Earl Grey - no milk, no sugar.

OP - why don't you go to a specialist tea shop and have a browse?

Boiledeggandtoast · 01/08/2019 17:34

Twinings Ceylon teabags are my everyday tea but I also love a good Darjeeling, orange Pekoe or Formosa Oolong.. Always make it in a teapot!

I agree with ScreamingValenta that it would be a good idea to try a specialist tea shop. They would be able to advise you and you can often have a good sniff of the different teas to see what you might like.

CadburySpira · 01/08/2019 17:35

So many different brands of tea and ways of having it! Might be easiest just to ask for a sip of everyone's tea.

Rooibos (Redbush) tea. Black, no sugar as it's naturally a bit sweet anyway. Only needs about a minute to steep. Also there's no tannin twang to it or caffeine.
Enjoy.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 01/08/2019 17:39

PG tips is rotten tea. Never drink it Grin

Twinnings earl grey or strong breakfast tea is lovely.

Megan2018 · 01/08/2019 17:42

Black, no milk or anything added.

I rarely drink it - but realised a few years ago what it is the milk I really hate. Black is so much better. But I still drink it rarely.

stubbyboardman · 01/08/2019 17:47

I drink Sencha green tea, really strong, nothing added. It's bitter and acrid and I love it :)

Teacakeandalatte · 01/08/2019 17:50

Tea, white no sugar. Stirred not shaken.

Mumsymumphy · 01/08/2019 18:10

I've taught myself to like tea this year. English Breakfast tea, 2/3 sugars and milky. Yum

RezCowgirl · 01/08/2019 18:33

Whole loose leaf Assam or earl grey in stainless steel strainer, not quite boiling water for at least 3 minutes. Strain leaves and add drop of milk.

BakedBeeeen · 01/08/2019 19:28

As per PPs, I like earl grey. I also really like red bush (rooibos), which has a sweet-ish flavour. I have lots of milk, no sugar. Yorkshire tea have a biscuit brew, it is lovely! My sister didn't drink tea till her early 20s, started drinking it whilst travelling for a year because she wanted to conserve money and discovered it is a very cheap drink!

longwayoff · 01/08/2019 19:36

Teas. Earl Grey, Lady Grey, Darjeeling, chai latte spiced. All quite weak without milk or sugar.

Isthisafreename · 01/08/2019 19:41

I don't like ordinary, supermarket style tea. I tend to drink teas that are meant to be served without milk. Mainly pu-ehr, oolong or green tea. I always buy loose leaves rather than teabags.

If you're going for green or oolong, make sure that water isn't boiling as it scalds the tea and it tastes bitter. The water should be 80C for them. That's when you can see the bubbles starting in the kettle.

bionicnemonic · 01/08/2019 19:41

Black Earl Grey. Boiling water on the teabag, don’t let it sit, take the bag out almost immediately, splash of cold water. Delicious!

StarJumpsandaHalf · 01/08/2019 20:00

@CadburySpira tea made in a mug is the work of the devil so scrap that idea.

It's very personal and you need to experiment, I'm not sure tea is for you if you like milk and sugar as you'll end up with hot water that mainly tastes of milk and sugar really.

As per a PP the kind of water you have does make a difference.

Just as an idea I always make my tea in a warm pot. I have 100% of blind tasting if someone gives me tea made with a bag in a mug.

Loose leaf is good but I'm not snobbish about bags. I like a strong but bright English Breakfast blend and take it with a little semi skimmed milk, no sugar.

Dorset tea if you can get it is lovely, or Mr Thompson's Gold. I used to like Yorkshire but went off it.

Whatever you do don't ever let tea stew.

midsomermurderess · 01/08/2019 20:34

Strong and milky. Basically builders, sometimes chuck a sugar in too. I loathe those insipid pale milky teas people sometimes offer up. Really, what is the point? I do also like eg an Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong, Lemon amd Ginger, but builders' teas is my go to. It's refreshing and reviving. Best drink of the day.

SweetPetrichor · 01/08/2019 21:27

Twinings Everyday is my go to 'work cuppie' tea. With a dash of milk - the more milky it is the more relaxing I find it, but I can drink it black happily too. Never sugar.

Whittards of Chelsea's Chilli Chai is my absolute favourite comfort tea. For everything apart from 'work cuppies' I use loose leaf. It makes a big difference. I also love dragon pearl, or silver needle as a morning tea. A few rose dried rose buds also makes a nice tea. I'm an absolute tea fiend...my desk at work has around 20 jars of loose leaf tea...black, white, green, fruit, herbal...I love it all apart from rooibos!
