Birthday present ideas for 5 year old obsessed with numbers?

GlitteryFluff · 01/08/2019 12:34

Any ideas? My mind is blank.

Ds is going to be 5 in a couple of weeks. He has HF ASD and is obsessed with maths, numbers, timers/countdowns etc

He's always setting timers in my phone and wants to know exactly how many minutes things are going to take. I've ordered him a stop watch & a till with money from learning resources but I wondered if anyone had any other ideas?

Thanks!

calculator?
analogue watch?
colourful abacus?

oooh those little clicky together squares for counting we all had at primary school!

Bert2e · 01/08/2019 12:39

Shut the box game? Great for number bonds and uses 2 dice.

A bingo set?

PamelaTodd · 01/08/2019 15:13

Mine loved visual countdown timer apps that reveal a picture at that age. I can’t remember a specific one. Sorry, that’s not a present really.

What about a talking clock?

RubHimSweetly · 01/08/2019 15:17

I got number drawer knobs for all of my son’s bedroom and playroom furniture!
Also:
Tape measure
Time tables game
Hundred square

DCIRozHuntley · 01/08/2019 15:24

I'm desperate for some Sumblox or there's a Lego set for doing times tables from here www.funphonics.education/product-page/diy-times-tables-kit-with-all-components-included

Medianoche · 01/08/2019 15:25

Manual tally counter? They’re cheap on Amazon and he could use it to count whatever he likes.
We’ve got a Ten Frame Towers game that’s basically fake Numicon, which gets a lot of use: www.amazon.co.uk/Junior-Learning-JL155-Counting-Visualizing/dp/B00B48GJWU?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
The book ‘How Big is a Million?’ Is also really nice for that age. There’s a pull out poster with a million stars on which is lovely.

Thank you all so much. There's some great ideas there I hadn't thought of. Some things mentioned he already has so you're definitely on his wave length. Think we're going to end up getting quite a few of the things mentioned as he's just not interested in anything else but numbers. Much appreciated. Thank you

I don’t know if this is too old (it says 8+) but I saw it advertised and thought it was something my DC would’ve been curious about at that age Turing tumble

EduCated · 01/08/2019 18:59

Potentially quite a lot of ideas from Bright Minds

nedtherobbot · 01/08/2019 19:38

Sumblox if you can stretch to it. If you find them on Facebook there is pretty good deal for the starter set they are about to launch. We have the home set and they are amazing. My 6 year old loves them for working out math problems and creating some of her own.

Bubblysqueak · 01/08/2019 19:48

A subscription to mathletics?

clottedcreamoverjam · 01/08/2019 19:51

Those expensive wooden sets for adding and that. I so want some but they cost a lot

nedtherobbot · 01/08/2019 19:51

Numicon might be worth looking at too. All the schools in our area use it.

clottedcreamoverjam · 01/08/2019 19:51

These 🤤🤤🤤🤤

Sand timers?

plonkie · 01/08/2019 19:55

My little boy loves numbers too and is obsessed with clocks. He's nearly 4. He's got loads of wooden clock puzzles where you can remove the numbers and play with them. We have wooden numbers all over the house! And magnetic numbers everywhere too :-)

moobar · 01/08/2019 19:58

What about one of the fitness tracker Fitbit type watches. So stop watch, clock, steps?

Bingo game?

beepbeep321 · 01/08/2019 20:01

My son I suspect is hf asd and completely obsessed with maths etc as well.
A pp has mentioned bright minds....highly recommend this...have bought many a thing from there over the years.

I thought outside the box and went with programmable toys as well .. again from bright minds, wipe clean maths games,
I'm trying to remember one thing he absolutely loved...it's in his bedroom at the mo..will come back tommorow with the name.

As an aside...
Do you mind me asking about other signs of asd your child shows? I find it really hard to know whether or not to go for a diagnosis for my child as he is very high functioning, but does definitely have some other traits of asd. But I don't know if it's enough for a diagnosis. If that makes sense?

beepbeep321 · 01/08/2019 20:02

Meant to also say, my son is 6 but his maths skills are probably about 3 years or more ahead in some respects due to his obsession.

AdaColeman · 01/08/2019 20:05

A set of Cuisenaire Rods.

Leeds2 · 01/08/2019 20:19

Dominoes.

beepbeep321 · 01/08/2019 20:30

Have remembered. It's called dive into shapes. It's a geometry shape making thing. He loves it and spends hours with it.
