Hello,

My dh and I are going to Dublin for a weekend in September. Has anyone got any recommendations for restaurants? Should I book Friday and Saturday night?

Thanks

The Winding Stair and Osteria Lucio

Outsomnia · 30/07/2019 12:37

Roughly where are you staying in Dublin?

For pre dinner drinks avoid Temple Bar, but it's nice to walk around and listen to the buskers. Just don't use it for food or drinks it's a rip off.

Locals will head to the South William Street/Grafton Street area. Plenty of pubs and restaurants, have a look at google maps.

My favourites when visiting are The Bailey Pub and Davy Byrnes across the street, and the Duke, all on Duke Street. Plenty more around there too.

My favourite restaurants are the Pig's Ear on Nassau Street, Dunne and Crescenzi on Frederick Street, and the Vintage Kitchen on Poolbeg Street, and pop next door to Mulligans Pub for the best Guinness in Dublin. Across the river agree with Winding Stair and there is a cute little place on Bachelor's Walk (the quays) called Terre Madre.

Check prices before you go, Dublin can be quite expensive.

Hope you have a lovely time.

I'd book everything. Dublin in heaving at the moment. I'm here now, back soon. Great spot.

HalfManHalfLabrador · 30/07/2019 12:38

Koh in the millennium walkway is lovely and very central

ThisIsTheFirstDay · 30/07/2019 12:40

Matt the Thresher and Boxty.

Buscake · 30/07/2019 12:42

Temple bar may be a tourist trap BUT book the elephant and castle for the best chicken wings of your life. I lived in Dublin for 5 yrs, left 11yrs ago and still salivate just remembering those wings! I go there every time I’m back and they are always excellent.

GivemeGinandTonic · 30/07/2019 12:42

Fade street social for great v tasty small plates and cocktails. FX Buckley for the best steak of your life!

actiongirl1978 · 30/07/2019 12:43

YY to Dunne and Crescenzi. The best Italian food I've ever eaten.

spiderlight · 30/07/2019 12:44

Cornucopia. We had the most amazing meal there in February.

IvanaPee · 30/07/2019 12:44

Agree with Elephant and Castle.

limesoda · 30/07/2019 13:00

Etto. I adore it. Their sister restaurant uno mas is good as well, I just slightly prefer the original.

Decent pint of Guinness in doheny & nesbitt across the road as well.

DariaMorgendorffer · 30/07/2019 13:03

Chapter One
Terra Madre
Etto
Bastible
Eldubbe
Fade street social

Lunch/coffee
The pepper pot
Brother Hubbard
Two pups
Queen of tarts
Fallon & Byrne

Bunsen for an amazing burger.

Grogans for a pint and a toastie

DariaMorgendorffer · 30/07/2019 13:04

Eldubbe?? Meant to say Ely!

IrishMamaMia · 30/07/2019 13:06

More votes for Winding Stair and Matt the Thresher :)

Shoxfordian · 30/07/2019 13:16

Thank you! Lots of googling for me
I'm staying near Phoenix Park but seems easy enough to get to temple bar etc.
Any cool bars you'd recommend as well? Anything not overly touristy would be good Grin

Do Rustic Stone and Hang Dai Chinese still exist? LOVED both of those

DianaBlythe · 30/07/2019 13:21

peruke.ie/cocktails/

Amazing cocktails here. Lovely romantic Georgian library style bar with candles upstairs. The S’mores and Key Lime Pie cocktails were amazing.

Outsomnia · 30/07/2019 13:53

Sounds like you might be staying in the Ashling Hotel. If so, or if you are anywhere near, go to Ryans Pub on Parkgate Street, a 3 minute walk from the hotel. Hasn't changed much since Victorian times. Lovely grub and a great pint too. Upstairs has FX Buckley steak restaurant, great steaks, the pub itself does lunch and dinner downstairs too.

I mentioned some bars in my previous post. But Dublin is awash with bars and pubs. Depends on whether you want lively, quiet, romantic, live music, cocktails etc. There are so many.

Shoxfordian · 30/07/2019 13:55

Thanks @Outsomnia, I am!
I looked at the steakhouse at Ryan's, might give it a try but maybe another branch of FX Buckley would be better as nearer to other bars. Also looking at the fish shop on Queens Street

Ashling is a nice hotel. Far enough outside the centre to be a bit quieter, but has tram outside the door to whisk you into the city.

I hope you don't think I am being condescending or anything, but if taking the tram, like everywhere, watch your bags, phones etc. Same applies to every big city transport system. Just a heads up.

I hope you have a ball.

kenandbarbie · 30/07/2019 14:32

Fade st social. There's either a posh pizza and steak bit or tapas. It's really fun and lively and there's an open air roof top bar with canopies if it's raining and cool views.

kenandbarbie · 30/07/2019 14:35

Don't go to temple bar if you want to avoid touristy.

Go to Dawson st, merrion row, harcourt st, fade st areas for bars.

NoGravyForYou · 30/07/2019 14:35

Rustic stone often have super cheap dinner deals on Taste.ie.

Not mad fancy but Mad Egg is yummy if you like chicken, the DIY cheesecake is 😍😍

Shoxfordian · 30/07/2019 16:24

Thanks, I'll have a look

Cheers @Outsomnia, I live in London so I always watch my handbag but you're right, always good to be cautious Smile

We know Dublin well and visit several times a year. I lived there for about 8 or 9 years when I was in my 20's / early 30's.

We usually try to hit a few of these when we visit
Dinner:
Fallon and Byrne
L'Gueuleton
La Cucina
Bunsen
Fade St Social
FX Buckley
Elephant and Castle for chicken wings

Drinks:
Wine bar in basement of Fallon and Byrne
Ely Wine Bar
Farrier and Draper
Fase St Social
The bar with no name (sign with a snail outside) Fade St
Long Hall
The Palace Bar
The Shelbourne Bar for a G&T
Peruke and Periwig - amazing cocktail bar upstairs

Coffee / lunch
the winding Stairs
The Dublin Woollen Mills
Bewleys on Grafton St for milky coffee and a cherry bun - beautiful interior
my dd loves Laudree
Butlers Hot Chocolate Cafe - very decadent

Things to see and do:
wander around Trinity College - incredible campus. Book of Kells is worth booking as the Long Library is out of this world
Christchurch Cathedral
St Michans - visit the mummies in the vaults Brams Stoker was there and it inspired Dracula
St Stephens Green - beautiful park
The National Gallery - free and fab!
The National Museum very near where you're staying
RHA Contemporary Art Gallery
Irish Museum of Modern Art - amazing campus
Little Museum of Dublin - a fun museum
Dublin zoo if you have small people with you

Do a literary walking tour

Have a great trip!

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 30/07/2019 16:43

The Ashling actually does fab cocktails if you are having a drink before going out for the night!
