Supermarkets Abroad Part Deux

I started a thread somewhere last year (maybe in chat and it’s disappeared - can’t find it anywhere) about the hidden joys of supermarkets in different countries.

I’m in Slovenia at the moment and they seem to have a similar range of supermarkets to the UK - there are Spar shops and Hofer which seems to be Aldi with a different name. Same logo though 🤔 Today we nipped into a Mercator but only needed an umbrella and DH wasn’t up for me browsing and getting excited by random baked goods.

So I am currently eating a tub of ‘made in Slovenjia’ ice cream called ‘Dream Cream’ which is very nice indeed, but it’s a big tub and I need to get through it because we leave tomorrow 😁

I have also enjoyed Hofer’s version of Bled Cake - a sandwich of two sheets of flaky pastry, with a layer of thick creme patissiere and a layer of sweetened whipped cream. It was a monster but very nice.

I was happy to find Brot Chips, like bagel crisps, but I’m 99% sure they have them in Aldi in the UK, so they’re less special 😁

Anyone discovered anything else delicious in a foreign supermarket this summer?

Oo I love this! We went to Crete and were right by a Lidl. My absolute favourite thing was chocolate tahini, so good on toast I brought it back as gifts.
I also really enjoyed the pastry selection- lots of spinach and feta. Then the occasional crème patisserie when you'd picked up a sweet one by accident Grin

Omg chocolate tahini sounds amazing @treaclesweet

Bumping this today because I got a wonderful filo pastry snail shaped thing filled with spiced apple at Hofer/Aldi that I will dream about for weeks. Why doesn’t my Aldi have a bakery?

Walnut boursin in French supermarche last summer. Yum.

JingsMahBucket · 29/07/2019 20:51

Whenever I’m not in France I miss all the little crottin cheeses easily available in supermarkets, 2 for only €2 or €3! And they come in all different colours and levels of stink: black, white, yellow-cream, etc.

I also get ridiculously excited about a foreign supermarket. Off to Gran Canaria in a couple of weeks but will report back. It is our family duty to have a cake every day!

Part une s’il vous plait?

The Mercadona in Spain has an amazing fish counter - I used to take the kids there when they were smaller just to look at all the fish (and get cool).
My daughter loves dinosaur biscuits - plain and chocolate. Not sure what they’re really called but she loves them and it’s the first thing she wants to get when we arrive.
Plus I always get the carton sangria and gazpacho soup - so yummy and hope the goodness of one counterbalances the guilt of the other!

Not abroad, but I went to Orkney a few weeks ago and the Co-op there was much better than any Co-ops I've been in in England.

Mackies crisps, which I don't think I've seen before, loads of interesting gins, individual breakfast packs of black pudding, square sausage and bacon and loads of other stuff that I can't remember.

Agree that the Mercadona fish counter is a thing of wonder.

In Cyprus a few years ago in Aldi or Lidl, can’t remember which, we bought cherry ice cream. It was to die for.

TweezerMay · 29/07/2019 23:51

@FairyFavour unfortunately I think it was in the days when chat threads disappeared after 90 days. I can’t find it anywhere.

@BarbaraofSeville we found similar when we went to Mull. For a tiny shop it packed a load more in than our one down the road at home.

@deste I love cherry ice cream! The Co-op do a cherry and amaretti biscuit one that I could eat by the vat load. I recommend it!

@Pipandmum that does sound amazing. I’d love to go to Spain. I went to Barcelona for a weekend as a teenager but that’s so long ago now that it doesn’t count and I didn’t have the love affair with supermarkets that I do now. Thanks for the tip 😁

Have a great time in Gran Canaria @MeOldBamboo. I look forward to your findings. I also want all the cheeses mentioned by @Stayawayfromitsmouth and @JingsMahBucket. Mmm cheeses.

I was in Germany recently. I swear the supermarket I shopped in was 80% meat 20% chocolate!
The oddest thing I found was buying bottled water, Germany sells way more sparkling than still and I was really confused trying to work out which was sparkling as I couldn't believe it was the majority of the shelf!
I ended up googling before nervously buying as I much prefer sparkling.

The USA has amazing supermarkets. I love seeing the food trends that are mainstream over there.

Is this the first thread?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3333083-Not-been-to-France-for-years-whats-good-in-French-supermarkets

Our recent successes have been drinks with sugar instead of sweetener, mustardy mayo, potatoes cooked in chicken fat from the hot counter. We never have enough time! Would love more discussion, we're driving home via France in a few weeks and I've allowed time for Auchan at Calais (unless someone can tell me Carrefour is better)
